On the second day of our 8-day trip to Sri Lanka, we boarded the Sri Lankan Railway's observation car (1st class) from Colombo. We traveled to Kandy, Sri Lanka's second largest city, while enjoying the magnificent view of rice paddies and mountainous areas. Although the observation car was first class, it cost only 780 yen, making it the most cost-effective way to travel. The entire city of Kandy is a World Heritage Site and a sacred place for Sri Lankan Buddhism. We enjoyed the atmosphere of Kandy by visiting the “Temple of the Tooth,” where Buddha's tooth is enshrined, and a chaotic market unique to Asia. In the evening, we went to see a traditional Sri Lankan dance performance.
