It was written after one of the guitarist (Gary Rossington) bought a new car and after a night of partying when he drove it into an oak tree and was injured causing a delay in their tour causing them to cancel or reschedule dates.
It's an anti drug song, Inspired by guitarist Gary Rossington he got drunk and high and crashed his bran new car into an oak tree, he knocked out his front teeth and broke his leg, they had an up coming tour they had to cancel, and the band fined Rossington $5,000
Yes, it’s an anti-drug song. Gary Rossington had wrecked a car, and had pretty significant injuries, delaying the band’s touring schedule. They fined Gary $10,000.
People are going to tell you to do Free Bird live in Oakland in 1977 , it's great but don't instead do live at Knebworth in 1976 it's truly better AND they don't waste half their time filming the audience ! Also you MUST hear Call Me The Breeze ,T Fore Texas , Swamp Music , The Ballad Of Curtis Loew Tuesday's Gone , I Need You , Saturday Night Special , Gimme Back My Bullets , Double Trouble , Gimme Three Steps , Was I Right Or Wrong , THESE ARE ALL GREAT SONGS but the ultimate truth here is LYNYRD SKYNYRD NEVER DID A BAD SONG and eventually you will hear each and every song they ever did ( because you won't be able to stop listening to SKYNYRD......EVER !!!!!!! ) and you will LOVE every song they ever did . The band Ronnie Van Zant singer songwriter AND LEADER period . Gary Rossington lead guitarist and slide guitar co-founder of SKYNYRD Allen Collins ONE OF THE GREATEST lead guitarists of ALL time also co-founder . Ed King original THIRD LEAD guitarist ( apparently you couldn't get into LYNYRD SKYNYRD unless you were a Great GUITARIST ) he left after the third album and SKYNYRD did the fourth album with just Gary and Allen then about fourteen months later they found Steve Gaines their ultimate third lead guitarist ! But don't forget about Billy Powell on piano and keyboards unbelievable you'll see . Leon Wilkinson a master of bass . Bob Burns original drummer was co-founder but had a nervous breakdown and left the band was replaced by Artimus Pyle a truly great drummer one of my all time favorites . I'm leaving out a shit ton of info but you'll find it . At the beginning of this I listed a few songs do them you won't regret any of them not one , AND YES I'LL SAY IT AGAIN , because LYNYRD SKYNYRD NEVER DID A BAD SONG NO NOT EVER ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️ 💯 party on Garth 😁🎸🎸🎸👏👏👏🤟✌️ WHO DEY 🖤🧡🖤🧡🖤🧡🖤🧡🖤🧡
Allen Collins, the guitarist in white, wrote the music. Ronnie Van Zant, the singer wearing the hat, wrote the lyrics. The best band. So sad that ended when the iron bird went down.
they just hit it big , contract wise...money was rolling in...a lot of over indulging goin on...new guitar ..new car..lots of drugs...drove right into that oak tree..almost killed him...one of their best jams, and one hell of a story
No one ever seems to mention a lyric in the song that i always thought was hilarious as hell . Whiskey bottles and brand new cars , ( oak tree here in my way ) .😂😂 Like damn , who put this forest here ?😂
This song about smelling death coming. If you listen to the lyrics, it’s talking about not doing drugs because it’s only gonna bring death. Just so happens for Lynyrd Skynyrd that smell of death was the plane crash that was coming. This is the last thing they released as a single before the crash.
I used to work with some guys who would shoot up coke with a needle. We all worked construction together. In the summer time when it's 110° outside and your sweating like a water hose that sprang a leak , the smell their bodies would put off was unbearable. That's the smell of death.
Here is irony for you.. I was actually in a car that hit an oak tree. My friend and I was hammered when we hit it. When I came to, alone, (he went for help) The car was totaled, but the radio was still on. This song was playing. All I could do was lay there and listen. You got it. I quit drinking and drugs that night. And because of this song, I have never been tempted by heroin. oh yeah.. sixty mph and still didn't chip the tree bark. in case anyone wonders. the tree was the undisputed winner.

And Gary's nickname was Prince Charming
My favorite Skynyrd song of all time.

The two guitars together are playing double and duel lead guitar.

Keep digging on the Skynyrd, try the Sweet Home Alabama live version from Oakland 1977 or Free Bird.

The singer was speaking from personal experience here, being an avid user of alcohol and quaaludes hiimself
This is as anti-drug as a song can get. But hearing it for the first time I can understand why one would think likewise.
1977 the only people that did Coke, where people with money, poor people did Whites, Truckers❤😂🎉😢😢😮😮😅
Who plays like that anymore? No wonder the young generation reacts to bands of the past. Good for ya all.👍
