I don't believe it. I think they came from somewhere near the lower earths mantle. Also, I am likely late but I think you may have been thinking of Castanets (sp?).
Geoff has not only done Tennessee Ernie Ford proud, but he has set a new standard for this song. The harmonies and layering in this version just add so much extra sonic richness to the song without detracting from the simple hard hitting message. Absolutely outstanding work.
I still can't believe he did all of this in full voice xD This dude dserves so much credit and support for those many years he invested into building his range and tone quality... it's not just pure talent with Geoff, it's life long hard training and perfectionism as he has pointed out many times, that's what impresses me even more with him. And the facts that he does such great work with arranging and video production all by himself too, damn I'm so grateful there's people like him and the whole of VoicePlay who share their passion for music with the world while staying so insanly down to earth!
Fun fact: there were literally no subharmonics this entire song. His chest voice is just that low. He can go at least a fifth down in subs, ofc slowly losing tonal quality but still extremely cool (can be heard in other covers like Halo, Enemy, Valhalla Calling, etc.) and anywhere to like the upper edge of the 5th octave in head voice. This is technically not the widest range a living human currently possesses but still incredible
My 17 year old and I just bopped along while singing this song in the grocery store. No shame. Love how he incorporates the tools into the percussion line. Brilliant. Great reaction and thanks for getting to this so quick. Love your energy and enthusiasm. I can't sit still listening to this song.
I watched this when it popped up on Geoff's page. This song was a particular favorite of my grandpa since he was a coal miner almost his entire life. That's how he got the black lung that caused his death.
I was so excited to see Geoff had done this song! I've always loved the Tennessee Ernie Ford version, but damn!!! Geoff added new life to it! I love how he's able to bounce his vocals all over the place in such a quick and clean fashion. And when he started spewing that demon breath... very few singers can drop that low and still be understood. Most of them are lucky just to make a noise that low. But you can still hear the words when Geoff does it. As always, I loved your reaction. I adore how you pick apart things and point them out. Thank you! ❤
I liked this a lot!! However, I keep thinking this would've been "so much fun" if he and Tim (Foust) would've done it as a duet! Can you imagine this with the bass and tenor harmony's of both of them together?!! 😉👍
Great reaction, as always! I'm pretty sure I say that every song Geoff releases is my new favourite, but I really do think this is the best thing he's done yet. I'm also biased in that I've always absolutely loved Sixteen Tons, so was really excited when he announced he was doing a cover. He has a way of being respectful toward the original, while still making it entirely his own. So good.
I like how he gives each one their own personality, look at the finger snapping. Two of them are resting their arms and only moving their hands, and one is even snapping with his left hand.
This is the sexiest ever. I loved this song before... but now. Wow. Great reaction. You prob don’t feel the same way I do but we can both appreciate the amazing vocals.
Your reactions are so much fun and wow did you get this one out quickly! I've watched this so many times since the pre-lease that I am literally hearing it in my sleep! Did you notice that it says LOW bass singer cover rather than just bass cover. I found that interesting. I love the use of the tools in this and how the different Geoff's interact with each other. Every time I think "this video can't possibly be as good as the last" Geoff proves me wrong. By the way, was it maracas that you were trying to think of? That was what I would have compared that particular sound to.
I concur wholeheartedly. I saw the vid of Geoff, but w/o any "aficionado/commentator. It blew me away. Tim by the way on YT has a show where he showcases other bass singers to impart their suggestions for those wanting tips to better themselves re singing bass.
Shout out to Qofy for the shout out to us Qofy gang folks - thanks! Dude!! You did it!! Listen to your own playback at 1:52. You actually fried the same note as Geoff. Lol.
I watched this earlier and I was still caught off guard watching it with you! 😂 Geoff and Tim both are super basses! Tim doesn’t go crazy as often as he used to, but I’m waiting, too! lol I enjoyed this one very much! I love how he used his super low when they shook the camera! I don’t know if I missed it the first time, but it seemed like re-watching with you that he started higher, then went down a key or two, then back up again. I’ll have to watch it again. Anyway, I’m always amused and entertained with your reactions!
I love the harmonies on these old folk / worker songs. Same as the old slave songs from pre-Civil War. They've got this similar grit but also remind me of old hymnals as well. Perfect for Geoff's vocals. Awesome analysis aga, QoFy. Hugs for the QoFy gang 🎶 🤗
1:55 i actually thought he was singing this F# in subharmonics...turns out its just a plucked bassline not Geoff singing :( dont know why because he can obviously do it
Might just have been for expediency putting a backing track together, which I think he said he mostly just programs in Logic and then the sound engineer enhances (basing some of that on his last Patreon chat). Not really sure on the process, but I think adding vocals into the backing track probably complicates things.
@@tschlaak I think what he meant was that the main vocals are in chest voice (rather than using any subharmonics), but the backing track is instrumental.

In a different reaction to this video, someone mentioned that they've seen Geoff talk about making this video. They said that he himself said he did this whole song with his chest voice, although IMHO, it sounded like he went subharmonic several times. Maybe not as much as in some of his songs, but he definitely went there.
*warning, long comment comming* And here we go 😁 that's what I was talking about at the stream, that the new Geoff's song is comming and it's here! I have so much to say about this song that I could do my own video, but it would be just about me being extremely happy about this gem. The accompaniment sounds like a bass violin, plucked. I think the percussion is mostly the mining implements, clapping, and snapping fingers. Maybe a little bit of rhythm off the bass violin, too. There are a couple of parts where there’s a suggestion of a drum kit - kick drum, pitched toms, maybe a snare, but it’s subtle.

One of the things I love about Tim Foust and definitely Avi Kaplan right now is they are composing original music that features bass singers because songs written for Tennessee Ernie Ford like this one or Johnny Cash are definitely 60 or more years old now and we need some new ones that are not just Christian genre based. This one refers to "the company store". That was a real thing in the late 1800s early 1900s. It was the most notorious with a company called the Pullman Car Company. Railroad cars. If you worked for them you had to live in towns they set up and pay rent to them and buy everything else food, clothes etc from "the company store". With that kind of a gap in bass material the younger bass singers are covering Avi Kaplan's songs almost before he stops singing them for the first time!

Can you please react to Elena Shaddow and Soo Bae performing Somewhere Over the Rainbow?
I will check it out
@@QofyReacts Thankyou
But I thought he’s not a bass singer? 😂
No. His Subharmonic is EVEN LOWER.
And yet, I would watch Geoff singing the phonebook before I would watch Tim. Avi is hit or miss.
Um... They're all the same guy, lol.
Any sense of humour ?
They're all the same guy it split screen
I can see that. Its a joke
All of them can sing base? You do realise that it's the same person right.
There’s something called a sense of humour , maybe you should order some for yourself
Thanks 😂

Hahaha yes

You’re missing the sense of humour of the Qofygang
It's all the same person
Genius

Just so you know.......its the same guy doing all the voices.
hes alright but the origional is way better.
Congratulations Captain Obvious you figured it out
@@QofyReacts your obviously not very smart since you stated in your video that they were different people despite wearing the same outfit and hairstyle. So yeah I pointed out your mistake or lack of observation skills. Don't cry and lash out because you are embarrassed. Take it like a man, if your capable of that.
@@johnlynem
First of all It’s “you’re “not “your “
I’m not sure which of us isn’t smart here
The one who laughed after he said “they all can sing bass”
Or the one who honestly believes that I cannot see that it’s all one person as the title is clearly one persons name
You sir, are delusional 😂 but sure go ahead and feel intelligent it’s a free world
@@QofyReacts Thats right its a free world. You post a video, I comment, you feel stupid and try to justify it lol. Just take the criticism and move on.
@@johnlynem
You can also take an L and move on though 😂
It works both ways
You criticised something which any intelligent person would see as clearly a joke and yet you in your feelings about it.
Great reaction!!
they are all the same guy
No way! really
