Landry was truly a football genius even tho his main expertise was defense, yet he understood how to design great offense and how to run them effectively. He was truly one of a kind, a master football craftsman.

What makes Staubach's 104.8 rating insane is that in 1971 the average NFL passer rating was 62.2. I lean toward the early 90s offense being even more unstoppable against any defense because of how it was constructed, but there's no question Dallas was at its most explosive and statistically prolific in the late 60s/70s. Hayes was a big catalyst, but the less sung Lance Rentzel paired with him for a dangerous tandem. In 1966 Dan Reeves led the NFL with 16 TDs, 8 rushing and 8 receiving. That stood as the franchise record for decades until Emmitt Smith broke it. People know Reeves as a great coach but forget how good a player he was.
    Excellent video!

I sure learned something from this one. Totally caught off guard that some of the other great offensive teams the Cowboys had were not the # 1 offense. I'd have thought Troy or Tony would have had at least one or two. Just goes to show you what a football genius Coach Landry really was. I absolutely loved seeing a young Pat Summerall interviewing Bob Hayes. And Billy Joe Dupree in action. Thanks again for another stellar video about my Cowboys. How smooth were Duane Thomas and Tony Dorsett in this one ? Emmitt is GOAT but DT and TD were poetry in motion. RIP Ron Springs. Can't wait for the next one LC !!

Thanks, bro! Yeah, I myself was shocked too after I did my research. Tony and Troy did have the number 2 ranked offense. But that number one missed them. Duane and TD were among the smoothest backs in any era. Thanks again, bro!

The 49ers always edged out the Cowboys in offense in the 90's, and the Patriots were usually the number one offense in Romo's time.

Cowboys didn’t need the #1 offense in their 1990s dynasty with that defense. They were one game away from winning 4 consecutive SBs. That dynasty was a machine that Jimmy could unleash for the biggest games.
Felt bad for Cowboys fans with McCarthy. Just like when he coached the Packers w/Aaron Rodgers, he gets through the regular season with what looks a Super Bowl team but a seemingly inferior team beats them in the playoffs. I might be wrong but IMHO it’s because McCarthy is a “we do what we do” team. There’s a great interview of Ernie Adams by Julian Edelman where he mentions teams with that philosophy. More times than not the Patriots won games against those kind of teams because they were versatile on offense & defense so they game planned to take away what the opponent did best while putting new wrinkles in the way they played that opponents hadn’t seen from them recently. McCarthy is almost a tragic figure that way. After winning a SB w/the 2010 Packers, his 2011 Packers were 15-1 & got destroyed by the 9-7 Giants in the divisional round. He lost in conference championship, divisional round & even wildcard after that & never made it back to the SB. So Cowboys fans, I feel your pain. Not saying McCarthy can never get back to the SB but I think he’s going to need a conference title game where everything goes the way of the Cowboys. I’ve been there w/my Steelers where we just seemed to walk in to ambushes. Belichick had Cowher’s & Tomlin’s number so we went to the SB when someone else took out the Patriots for us to clear the path. Good luck this season. Hope you guys get to see your Cowboys win another ring. 🍀👍

We'll be fine. We're already in the playoffs. We'll probably be the 5th seed, which means we'll most likely play against a bad wildcard team. We should beat them, which means we'll probably play against the Eagles in the divisional round. I like those odds. Dak is an Eagle killer. Tomorrow the world will clown us and say all kinds of stuff. But if you're honest, we all had Dallas losing this game even before the season started. It was an AFC game vs a desperate team that historically we've had issues beating in the regular season for years now. Mark my words. If we play the eagles in the divisional round we'll make it to the nfc championship game.

You could argue that the 1968 squad was the greatest team in franchise history that even most Cowboys fans have forgotten about. It's crazy that team basically just didn't show up against Cleveland in the post season. The back to back post season losses in 1968 and 1969 to the Browns were just as crushing and frustrating to Dallas as 1966 and 1967 losses to the Packers.
They kind of mirror what's going on right now with today's Cowboys. Two back to back 12-5 seasons only to be ended by San Francisco. This current season looks to be shaping up as maybe another disappointing post season if they have to play the 49ers again. Oh well. Let's hope not.

Another great video and another reason Landry is actually under rated as a coach. The more I look at the numbers, the more I am astonished at what a great coach he was. In my opinion, the measure of great teams and team dynasties is the number of times they made the final four. Not Super Bowls, not any other single stat. The more I look at the numbers, the more I am convinced that if you want to find the best teams (esp from 1970-79; maybe further) , all one needs to do is look at the teams that made the final four. Certainly there are exceptions, but those are rare. The final four teams are almost always the best four teams in the league. Super Bowls and Championship games fall the way they fall, sometimes they match the seasons numbers, sometimes not. But the final four almost always matches up with who should be there based on team stats and record per conference. The Patriots and Bengals and others all had some great teams in the 70's , but they never got to the championship game because they were good, not great and the numbers bares this out. The Redskins in '72 and the Broncos in '77 were no fluke. They deserved to be there. But they never did before or after (in the 70's). Of course, I could be totally wrong about this. Bt the main reason I think this is that the years Dallas was one and done under Landry were years when their teams were good, but not great. ('76, '79, '83 and '85). In 1975, one might say that Dallas didn't have the 1st or 2nd best team in the NFC because they were a wild card team. Looking at the line-ups; I'd agree that the Rams and Vikings were better. However, Dallas ranked 3rd and 5th in offense and defense in the NFL that year; 1st in offense and 2nd in the NFC.

Great video. How many coaches have had the number 1 offense in yards or points with 4 different quarterbacks? Landry was amazing. The 1962 Cowboys were #2 in offensive yards with both Meredith and LeBaron at the helm, so he almost did it with 5 QB's. Another interesting fact: Landry was a defensive coach, while Lombardi was an offensive coach with the Giants, yet both would consistantly excel with the other side of the ball as head coaches.

They had some good well oiled machine offenses under Danny White. Shouldve gotten to at least one Super Bowl with him
That 1983 Cowboys offense was awesome. Granted they were ranked 2nd in the NFL not 1st...still White threw 29tds (which was a bigger number back then) and the team overall had 31 passing td's. Dorsett had 1300+ yards (Springs added another 500). They did an amazing job spreading the ball around. Cosbie, Hill, Butch Johnson, Pearson, Springs, Dorsett...heck even Donley every time he touched the ball in 1983 it was a big play

Another great video! This one truly gives perspective to so many aspects/possibilities. The two things that stand out to me the most are; it only took the Jonses 30 years to gain the football knowledge that Landry had on day one, and I don't know what Dak was dealing with last year but it must have been hard. One more thing this video pointed out to me was how, at the time we were all frustrated with Danny White not winning the big game (myself included). Now, looking back, he was elite. I know I was spoiled. Man, I would've been a lot happier these past 25 years had he been our QB. Merry Christmas bro.

Sorry, I'm going on and on tonight. But here are my final thoughts on Dallas teams under Landry. Everything was perfect personnel wise for Dallas during 4 seasons; 1970,1971, 1977 and 1978. The personnel was just so strong for all of those seasons. Starteers and back-ups. All other seasons there were noticeable gaps/weaknesses in their starting line-ups. Yet Landry had 20 consecutive winning seasons and 12 finals fours in that time period. But I do believe that 1971 team was something special. Their record doesn't show it, but I'd put them against any team from the 1960's and 70's and maybe the 80's as well. (its hard after 1977 because the game changes so much).

Its a TEAM game but i believe history will show if your offense can move the chains and clock consistently and get some points a rested defense can wreak havoc and keep the opposing offense on the bench.

If you want to win the Super Bowl and especially doing it on the road, you are going to need the defense to step up.

The Cowboys haven’t been to the Super Bowl since 1995 season - 28 seasons. When I think about Dak making $160 million it just pisses me off. He’s really not that good. Why? Zero Super Bowl appearances. Remember that team in the 90’s? Now that was a complete team built under the salary cap. Could they do that now? No, cause Dak gets such a huge cut. I’ll ask again. Why? I hear people say, “He carries the team.” Well, yeah, he’d better cause he makes all the money but still, zero Super Bowl appearances. I grew up watching Leroy Jordan, DD Lewis, Hegman, Breunig, Thomas Henderson and Dickerson. Those dudes were looking to put some pain in your life. What I care about is for the Cowboys to win the Superbowl. They can keep the league MVP award. They can keep the #1 ranked offense or defense. They can keep the NFC East title. They can keep the #1 seed. They can keep all other accolades. The only accolade I want is another Superbowl title for the Cowboys. That's it. Dude i saw this coming going up to Buffallo and playing them there i knew they were gonna loose .cuz they came off a great game and Buffallo is a descent team but the good news is its better to loose now than the last two weeks of the season i didnt watch it cuz i knew they were going to loose

Dallas needs a running game. It's getting ridiculous. It really is. It's only one 100-yard game this entire season out of Pollard.

@thelogicalcowboy well I think I mentioned trading up for Robinson from Texas or Gibbs from Alabama but no one listened lol like I knew they wasn't going to trade up but in this case it might have been worth it they still got 2 more games winnable games and if Philly looses Again then just maybe but they gotta be ready for the 49ers it's inevitable

Could you do Billy Joe Dupree and Randy Hughes. Hughes might have been the best back up safety in history. When he was in the field he. was as good as Cliff Harris ir Charlie Waters

    • @thelogicalcowboy
      @thelogicalcowboy  5 месяцев назад +2

Good idea! Hughes was probably the most athletic safety we ever had up their with Woodson and Harris. I saw the guy jump at least 4 or 5 feet off the ground to intercept a pass that the quarterback was trying to throw away. It was one of the best interceptions I have ever seen.

66 and 68 were before the merger but in 66 they went to the NFL Championship Game against Green Bay
71 went to their first Super Bowl against the Baltimore Colts
      78 won Super Bowl
80 went to the NFC Championship against the Eagles
This video isn't about Dallas defenses
