How come when i use the strech command it instead of streching the object simply moves it?

I know it's been a year but seems no one has answered the question. The object moves because when you selecting the object, you have to start from the righthand side to the left. The green shade will appear. Otherwise, the blue shade(Select) will move the object as you've mentioned.
