Lot of these games are absolutely beautiful! For me, the first RPG I ever played was FFVII. I was shocked how much I enjoyed it, all those years ago. I missed out on so many great games, because I was definitely biased against this genre and thought it was boring and stupid looking. I was definitely wrong, haha!
So true game's core is top tier but that desperately needs some QoL improvements. like it becomes basically unplayable for today's new commer which makes me sad cuz that game is awesome
Grandia 2 is so good! I still have my Dreamcast copy of it. The special abilities and the clutch moments of your character icon barely beating a bosses ability ATB charge still lives rent free in my head 20 years later.

The biggest issue with FF5 was the grind for people that suffer from the inability to not max out every characters jobs. Stranger of Paradise was way better than I was expecting and then led to me telling my friends Garland did nothing wrong. Everything made by Level 5 is sadly underrated and needs more love. Never finished Dark Cloud 2 because my PS2 died but I maxed out all my characters and weapons in the original. Dark Cloud 1 was the only game I had for about 2 years.

They probably dog on it mostly because of the ending plot twist. It's the only Star Ocean I've played but it's awesome. Love the characters, especially Albel and Nel. Great music and story too.
The Second Story (ps1) is fantastic, but those “main baddies” just don’t fit. (Trying not to spoil anything for anyone) Haven’t played the new R version. Heard it’s even better.
I would like to add the Shadow Hearts games as a mention, A high camp gothic horror rpg set in alternate history with a unique battle system to boot, too bad the series left on a whimper and died on the same console as it started on, I mean i would've loved to see a Shadow Hearts game set in WW2. Hopefully Pennyblood comes to fruition hopefully.
Ultra based for #2. DQ7 is my favorite DQ game and the first DQ I played. Only played the 3DS version and really fell in love with the whole thing. I really like how adventurous the game feels. Just a bunch of kids wanting to go out and see the world and I honestly love all the individual plots going on with each island you go to. Also, am a Maribel fan, too. I feel she's misunderstood.
I prefer Vandal Hearts over all other tactical RPGs. Some of the pros of Vandal Hearts: - Engaging storyline with political intrigue and personal drama. - Strategic gameplay requiring careful planning and tactical thinking. - Diverse cast of characters with unique abilities and classes. - Dynamic isometric grid-based battle system. - Challenging difficulty for a rewarding experience. - Atmospheric music enhancing the game’s atmosphere. - Unique art style with distinct charm. - Significant replay value due to multiple character classes and strategies. - Includes some gore elements for added intensity.
Lunar was a great game. I first played it in my early teens and was hooked on JRPGs forever after. If not for Lunar I'd have never played Legend of Dragoon or any of the Final Fantasy games. Even to this day I would place it in my top three. Also Kyle is a GoaT, and the music slaps.

@@TheTateful Dragon Quest 4 and 11 are tied for my favourite cast of characters of all time! After that for the DQ series would have to be DQ8 (Not a big Angelo guy, but LOVE Yangus, and Jessica is coo), and I generally don't like most of the party members in DQ7. I liked Keifer.. I guess?

Ohh hell yeah! Lunar is my favorite RPG series. Silver Star Story Complete on PS1 was what made me an RPG fan and hooked me on the genre instead of viewing them as fun time wasters. Enternal Blue is my all time favorites. Truely some beautiful characters and such a touching Fairy tale.
@@agranosclem it wasn’t very good imho. They changed it so your character and the enemy would move at the exact same time. So if you set your character to move behind an enemy, they would just move away while you were walking over there…
I feel like Okage: Shadow King and Radiata Stories need more attention. Though, as basic as Okage is, maybe it's rated exactly as it should be. I find it charming as hell, though.
sweet home looks really interesting! i think dark cloud 2 doesn't get enough credit for how good it is. another game I think needs more credit is folklore on the playstation 3. that game was really good and interesting and nobody ever talks about it.
Sweet Home was SO good dude! Be sure to check it out! I completely agree with Dark Cloud 2, and need to look into Folklore. I remember it coming out and being like the ONLY JRPG on the PS3 for a long time. But never really looked into it for some reason.
Anyone ever play Legend of Legaia or Legend of Dragoon? Those were two of my favorite RPGs to play on PS1. Legend of Dragoon is on PS Plus for anyone who wants to try it.

Even Legend of Dragoon had a unique battle system that was different from other games at the time. I constantly look for JRPGs to play so I’m excited for the DQ 2D HD release. I hope they launch a demo for it on PS before launch.
@@drewtheunspoken3988 the first Legaia was the best. I played Legaia 2 but it wasn’t as appealing as the first. I really liked Legend of Drgaoon because of the addition system. I wish both games got a current gen upgrade because those games were classics.
Tactics Ogre (and Reborn) tricked me into believing I liked tactical RPGs as a genre because it was just so good! I liked some Final Fantasy Tactics, but never managed to finish a single Disgaea game despite loving the writing. Tactics Ogre was just so amazing.
I did play through Knight of Lodis for love of the series, but I don't have the vivid memories of enjoyment that Tactics Ogre gave me. I liked the game, I finished it, but I didn't _love_ it.

I don't mean to rant, but I will never understand how Dark Cloud 2 is so much more beloved than Rogue Galaxy. I find Dark Cloud's combat super tedious and boring, and it's far more outdated. I believe it's (for most) nostalgia bias. More people played that growing up than Rogue Galaxy, and while I am guilty of having nostalgia for Rogue Galaxy myself, I have put it to the test through numerous playthroughs in more times than I can count and it always holds up. Dark cloud 1 and 2 feel like prototypes to it, which makes sense since it was originally conceived as Dark Cloud 3. I am of the opinion that Rogue Galaxy is Level 5's magnum opus, their RPG design at its finest. The music, artstyle, voiceacting, characters, world, crafting, and gameplay are all outstanding. The common critiques I hear center on its combat and story which I very much disagree with. I guess my point is that is that because of the lack of recognition it so deserved (even to this day) combined with how it didn't do well comercially, we were robbed of a promising new franchise. I suppose many obscure gems share the same fate. Level 5 has made other terrific RPGs like Dragon Quest VIII and Ni no Kuni 1/2, but Rogue Galaxy will always be their best, and I will stand on this hill by my lonesome shaking my fist at the clouds for as long as I live. Anyways, thanks for mentioning it.
@@ADistantWail I pretty much agree with everything, but I feel like some of Rogue Galaxy’s dungeons seem the drag on forever; whereas DC2’s don’t get that bad. The combat in Rogue Galaxy is overall better I think, but I love DC2’s as well. Trust me, Rogue Galaxy was my favorite game of all time for a while. I love the game, but if I had to go back and replay one of them right now; I’d choose DC2. Rogue Galaxy’s better in a lot of ways, but to me; it doesn’t make up for how dragged out a lot of the dungeons are.
@@ADistantWail I also preferred DC2’s little minigames n shit. Insectron or w/e was fun, but it requires so much time put into it, and the matches themselves are so short.
@dukey03 Totally understandable. You practically need to look up a guide to get good insectors. I find the synthesis mechanics and factory to be the most fun. A lot of it definitely comes down to preference since I feel the same way about Dark Cloud's dungeons. I think I get so caught up in the music, atmosphere, and flow in and out of combat of Rogue Galaxy's dungeons that their length never bothered me. I don't think the Dark Clouds are bad games by anymeans, they just have never vibed with me personally.
@@dukey03 It is a 20 hour long turn based JRPG about a groupe of anthropomothic animal children that go on a quest to save there families. They live inside a giant ancient mysterious powerful fortress like Tank. It is a bit like Howls Moving castle but based on technology instead of magic. The turn based combat is really good. In my opinion it is better then the combat of Persona 5 and Final Fantasy X. It is not that hard or complicated but I need to keep my head in the game at all times or things will go south fast. Almost no fight feels like mindless filler. It is very engaging. If you want to try Fuga out: Fuga is available on PC and most modern consoles like Switch, PS4, PS5 and so on. It has no physical release. It is only available in digital form. Fuga has a free demo which is just straight up the first 3 chapters of the game. I highly recommend that demo. It also has a direct sequel: "Fuga Melodies of Steel 2" but I advice against playing the second game before the first game unless you do not care about the story and characters.

While I have played and own every game listed(#7 vandal hearts has a sentimental value because it was a gift from a late friend), I constantly will tell people who play RPGs about Lunar 1&2 and how they should play this gem. I mean I own the Sega CD(#2 was in fact the very first game I bought with my own money) and PS1 versions and they are amazing. PS1 versions I agree are better.

If the remake never comes out, it may also turn into a underrated(because atm when I tell people about that game they seem to not know of it, while Lunar they have heard a little), or become underplayed(due to being a PS1 game and the discs can be pricy)
FFV really is great but yeah I can't say any FF game is underrated lol I've owned Rogue Galaxy for like 3 years now but haven't played it :< I gotta get to it! agree DQVII is massively underrated. I think VIII gets all the hype but VII deserves much more. I... did not like Tactics Ogre Reborn lol :X it was very boring to me. and I do actually like SRPGs! I always forget what games I think are underrated when I'm actually asked about them ofc. Voice of Cards series, Jeanne d'Arc (maybe less so now that it just got rereleased!), Eiyuden Chronicle Rising, Odin Sphere Leifthrasir, Marenian Tavern Story, and probably Ys Origins. maybe even Ys IX based on the way I see people talk about it.

@@dukey03 the 3ds monsters have a fan translation patch SO thats something , ni no kuni for the ds is the original Game and is a complete diferente Game from gameplay perspective and even the story is a little different, metal max series is awesome at least the 4 Main games beign snes returns, 3 , 2 reload ( Wich is a remake and i recomend playing after 3) and 4 wich is only in japanese up to this date.

People promote a lot of these, ff5 and vandal hearts, let alone you could've timestamped the games rather than numbers. 8:11 number 3 tactics ogre reborn has godawful AI and pulled the rogue class while implementing level caps. No thanks outside cutscene vids well edited on youtube. It also had youtubers playing a couple months before release, so it's not obscure.
Let’s be honest, you didn’t give FF13-2 a fair shot because you and the entire internet say 13 is “too linear”, which is a shame because 13-2 fixes all of 13’s problems into a fun FF adventure.
Strangers of Paradise was far from underrated. Game was mid as hell. I played it solo and was just bored throughout the entire game, didn't bother getting the DLC

Final Fantasy 5 was tied with 4 for my favorite OG final fantasy games. Such a great play. I definitely liked it more than 6

Highly recommend Shining Force 1/2/3 if you liked Vandal Hearts. They have a nice blend of traditional RPG traversal and tactical gameplay.

Tactics Ogre (and Reborn) tricked me into believing I liked tactical RPGs as a genre because it was just so good! I liked some Final Fantasy Tactics, but never managed to finish a single Disgaea game despite loving the writing.
Tactics Ogre was just so amazing.

I did play through Knight of Lodis for love of the series, but I don't have the vivid memories of enjoyment that Tactics Ogre gave me. I liked the game, I finished it, but I didn't _love_ it.

I don't mean to rant, but I will never understand how Dark Cloud 2 is so much more beloved than Rogue Galaxy. I find Dark Cloud's combat super tedious and boring, and it's far more outdated. I believe it's (for most) nostalgia bias. More people played that growing up than Rogue Galaxy, and while I am guilty of having nostalgia for Rogue Galaxy myself, I have put it to the test through numerous playthroughs in more times than I can count and it always holds up. Dark cloud 1 and 2 feel like prototypes to it, which makes sense since it was originally conceived as Dark Cloud 3. I am of the opinion that Rogue Galaxy is Level 5's magnum opus, their RPG design at its finest. The music, artstyle, voiceacting, characters, world, crafting, and gameplay are all outstanding. The common critiques I hear center on its combat and story which I very much disagree with. I guess my point is that is that because of the lack of recognition it so deserved (even to this day) combined with how it didn't do well comercially, we were robbed of a promising new franchise. I suppose many obscure gems share the same fate. Level 5 has made other terrific RPGs like Dragon Quest VIII and Ni no Kuni 1/2, but Rogue Galaxy will always be their best, and I will stand on this hill by my lonesome shaking my fist at the clouds for as long as I live.

@@ADistantWail I pretty much agree with everything, but I feel like some of Rogue Galaxy’s dungeons seem the drag on forever; whereas DC2’s don’t get that bad. The combat in Rogue Galaxy is overall better I think, but I love DC2’s as well.
Trust me, Rogue Galaxy was my favorite game of all time for a while. I love the game, but if I had to go back and replay one of them right now; I’d choose DC2.
Rogue Galaxy’s better in a lot of ways, but to me; it doesn’t make up for how dragged out a lot of the dungeons are.
@@ADistantWail I also preferred DC2’s little minigames n shit. Insectron or w/e was fun, but it requires so much time put into it, and the matches themselves are so short.
@dukey03 Totally understandable. You practically need to look up a guide to get good insectors. I find the synthesis mechanics and factory to be the most fun. A lot of it definitely comes down to preference since I feel the same way about Dark Cloud's dungeons. I think I get so caught up in the music, atmosphere, and flow in and out of combat of Rogue Galaxy's dungeons that their length never bothered me. I don't think the Dark Clouds are bad games by anymeans, they just have never vibed with me personally.

@@dukey03 It is a 20 hour long turn based JRPG about a groupe of anthropomothic animal children that go on a quest to save there families. They live inside a giant ancient mysterious powerful fortress like Tank. It is a bit like Howls Moving castle but based on technology instead of magic.
The turn based combat is really good. In my opinion it is better then the combat of Persona 5 and Final Fantasy X. It is not that hard or complicated but I need to keep my head in the game at all times or things will go south fast. Almost no fight feels like mindless filler. It is very engaging.
If you want to try Fuga out:
Fuga is available on PC and most modern consoles like Switch, PS4, PS5 and so on.
It has no physical release. It is only available in digital form.
Fuga has a free demo which is just straight up the first 3 chapters of the game. I highly recommend that demo.
It also has a direct sequel: "Fuga Melodies of Steel 2" but I advice against playing the second game before the first game unless you do not care about the story and characters.

While I have played and own every game listed(#7 vandal hearts has a sentimental value because it was a gift from a late friend), I constantly will tell people who play RPGs about Lunar 1&2 and how they should play this gem. I mean I own the Sega CD(#2 was in fact the very first game I bought with my own money) and PS1 versions and they are amazing. PS1 versions I agree are better.

@@dukey03 Indeed. Suikoden 1&2 is another I would put in high regard. If the remake never comes out, it may also turn into a underrated(because atm when I tell people about that game they seem to not know of it, while Lunar they have heard a little), or become underplayed(due to being a PS1 game and the discs can be pricy)

I always forget what games I think are underrated when I'm actually asked about them ofc. Voice of Cards series, Jeanne d'Arc (maybe less so now that it just got rereleased!), Eiyuden Chronicle Rising, Odin Sphere Leifthrasir, Marenian Tavern Story, and probably Ys Origins. maybe even Ys IX based on the way I see people talk about it.

@@dukey03 the 3ds monsters have a fan translation patch SO thats something , ni no kuni for the ds is the original Game and is a complete diferente Game from gameplay perspective and even the story is a little different, metal max series is awesome at least the 4 Main games beign snes returns, 3 , 2 reload ( Wich is a remake and i recomend playing after 3) and 4 wich is only in japanese up to this date.

@@ExalinExcels Dark Cloud 2 is so damn good! Hey man, DQX is fairly accessible now for everyone in English. You have to put in a bit of work, but that work earns you the entirety of the original game plus like 99% of V2 for free!

No thanks outside cutscene vids well edited on youtube. It also had youtubers playing a couple months before release, so it's not obscure.

Strangers of Paradise was far from underrated. Game was mid as hell. I played it solo and was just bored throughout the entire game, didn't bother getting the DLC
Sorry but reborn is a shitty vertion it was Dumb down and added a really annoing rgn component, stick with the psp or original vertion instead.
