  • Are there any loss of sound with BOSS buffered bypass? To make it clear, I carried out 3 experiments.
    Experiment 1
High frequency is strong when BOSS is ON compared to BOSS is bypassed. When BOSS is bypassed, total cable length is up to 10m. The loss of high frequency seems to be the effect of long cable.
    Experiment 2
In order to remove the effect of change of cable length, DI-1 is inserted. Cable length is 5m either BOSS is ON and bypassed. The tone is quite similar. It means, BOSS makes no change or degradation in sound.
    Experiment 3
Solely examine the effect of cable length, 5m cable is inserted in the loop of switch box. The tone obviously degraded when the cable length is 10m.

The Boss DI is supposed to be good quality, but is a little expensive too. Still, this clearly shows it can be a great help.

I like the vid but the DI-1 is active right? So then the experiment would be redundant. [ Guitar - cable - buffer BD2 - patch - buffer DI-1]
Plus, the last part would be intenser without the DI-1's buffer following the increased parasitic capacitance via increased cable length. Good job and nice block diagrams. BOSS has a great bypass tone. No need for true-bypass imo.

Thank you for the comment. Sorry for insufficient description for these experiments.
Yes, DI-1 is active. Input impedance is very high. But, the experiment is not redundant.
In experiment 2, I put DI-1 for the purpose of removing the effect of 5m cable on Amplifier side.
In Experiment 1, when BOSS is on, the length of cable is 5m before buffer, and when BOSS is bypassed, the length of cable is totally 10m. So, when BOSS is bypassed, the tone is degraded with loss of higher frequency.
In Experiment 2, both when BOSS is on and bypassed, the length of cable is 5m before buffer. As a result, the tone is quite same between BOSS is on and bypassed.
In Experiment 3, the length of cable is changed between 5m and 10m. When the length is 10m, the tone is degraded with loss of higher frequency. This is similar effect of experiment 1 with true bypass.
The essence is not active or passive, but cable length.

Takahiro Kamai Thank you for in-detail answer!
Redundant was a bad choice of words on my part, sorry!
What I meant to say was that it would be more interesting to hear the effect of experiment 3 as follows:
      [ guitar] > [A 5m] OR [B 10m] > [amp]
The high-end loss would probably be a lot more present without any kind of buffering in-chain. e.g. Santana's PRS signature guitar has a 'sweet switch' (marketing gimmick) which adds capacitance and a slight audio delay to simulate a long cable chain. Much like what you would achieve in Experiment 3.
Thanks again for the informative video, I will surely share it with friends!

No problem. Thanks for great understanding to my expressions. These are very simple experiments but I designed them carefully. The effect of cable length change is quite interesting. True bypass believers must take care of this factor.

Takahiro Kamai Simple but very discuss worthy it seems. I have a combination of true bypass and buffered. Impedance sensitive fuzz pedals up front and the rest is preference.
