  • In this video Paul and James take a look three different DI (Direct Injection) boxes for recording bass.
DI boxes are far from what you might call sexy pieces of studio kit but most, if not all of us have at least one and as it turns out, not all DI boxes are created equal.
The three models under test are the Warm Audio Active DI (thanks to Nova Distribution in the UK for this one). The MTR DI-3 and the Behringer Ultra-DI DI-20.
Three different units at three different price points. Let us know which one you prefer.
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

For people just getting started with DI and home recording, the Behringer BDI21, GDI21, and ADI21 are fantastic because firstly they give you a pedal that's similar to a SansAmp for Bass, Guitar, or Acoustic. Secondly they give you a DI box if you bypass the effect on the pedal, it's just a dry guitar DI that passes through the XLR output on the back.

Great comparison!!! The more WARM Audio DI reviews I watch, the more convinced I want one!

If I have an active bass, the right choice would be passive DI box right?

At the end of the day there isn't much difference. I've tried every combination of active pickups on basses and acoustics with pickups, and have never heard a night and day difference.
EDIT: I should qualify that by saying there isn't much difference *when you use good quality DIs.* Now mind you that doesn't mean you need to spend a jillion dollars on the Rupert Neve one. Radial ProDI/Pro48 are top notch boxes and not that expensive. You can upgrade to the JDI/J48 models which simply adds a Jensen transformer, which is nice but certainly not required, and does add a fair bit to the price. Countryman is also a great box and built like absolute units. And can be powered off a 9V battery for quite some time if need be, though I'd always recommend using phantom if possible. Really excellent boxes. I've owned both for years and they're both world class. There's a very good reason you see them on the pedalboards or gear lists of A list players and venues.

This oddly enough is the video that has convinced me to buy the iridium edition Amp1, I think. If you still have the warm audio di at your disposal, maybe an idea for a video with the amp1 could be recording with the amp1, a quality DI and impulse responses. What do you think?

And I know that they do the BluBox, however I don’t want to be restricted to just those IRs.

I think the worst sounding one was the MTR. I have always liked the fact that Behringer makes cheap stuff that sounds really good, and can take a beating. I use a lot of their gear and it is great.

I was looking at the Berhinger - however, there seems to be a theme throughout the reviews - and it's rarely a positive tone in any reviews I've read.
Like the fact you acknowledge that there's a price difference, but there's a REASON for that price difference.
