      Keep at it! I played piano when I was a kid and I can still kick myself for not sticking with it. When you're young, you can learn to make it like 2nd nature. And I swear, kid, even if you turn out to want to become something else professionaly, you'll be forever grateful to yourself if you put in the time and effort now because making music is the most amazing, beautiful and fun thing to do. And that will never change, no matter what your life has in store for you.

    Just stumbled across your video Steve and I would like to say that I thought you were brilliant. I can see you are an accomplished pianist who probably plays by either ear and/or knowing your chords and progressions whereas I unfortunately can only play by reading music for the last 60 years, too old now to learn chords (wish I had done in my youth). Anyway a pleasure to listen to you. Cheers.

      @capitolswingclassicjazzswi3048  3 года назад +8

      Hi Robert, thank you so much for the lovely comments. I started at around 6 years old and had piano lessons with a local teacher. although i went through the usual Royal College of Music exams, practical and theory, and learnt to play from music, in truth i used to spend more time improvising and playing along to my parents LP's on the stereo. Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Mantovani, soundtracks from musicals - etc. i was luck at the age of 12 to be able to accompany the choir at our local church and then start playing the organ for morning services. That taught me a lot about accompanying and i had to learn how to cope with playing one verse to many or stopping one verse short!. At 16 I left school and started playing in bands, Trad jazz, country and western and also as pianist and musical director for local am-dram clubs. Another really good learning curve in improvising. i've been lucky to have played with different bands and had my own jazz trio and function band. i now enjoy being part of Capitol Swing with my hugely talented friend John Prescott. My sight-reading is slow as i just don't practise it enough but i've spent years with bands where I just have a sheet with lyrics and chords above. My comfort zone. Thanks again and keep enjoying music.

      Hi Clyde - its one in long line of Yamaha pianos i have had over the years. this current one is a Yamaha CP4 stage piano. great tone and touch to them. They don't have speakers but on the plus side that keeps the weight down for transporting and carrying them into venues. hope you liked the video. if you enjoyed please feel free to subscribe. i post cocktail piano videos from my home as well - all on our Capitol Swing channel. Cheers

      Hi Mary, it's a Yamaha CP4 stage piano. I've used Yamaha for years as i really like the tone and the touch. The CP4 doesn't have built in speakers (to keep the weight down for gigging) but you can plug it in to a small amp or use the headphone socket. TBH any of the Yamaha clavinova's are great for home use but they do take up more room. I'm very lucky (and indulgent) and have a Clavinova CVP47 at home and a Kawai baby grand. not much room for anything else though! thanks for listening - much appreciated

      Hi. It's a great question but one I struggle to answer. One of the reasons I've never taught piano is because I kind of don't know, or don't think about, how I play. I've always done a lot of accompanying of singers and you learn to fill in the gaps around and underneath the vocal, without dominating it. when it comes to swing/jazz/cocktail piano I love big band music and i think the top of my right hand is playing the melody, the bottom part of my right hand is playing 'stabs' like the saxes and trumpets would do in a big band. my left hand is a combination of rhythm and chords. i bounce the chords between my left hand and right hand to give that big band sort of feel. It's inspired me now to do some videos at home with a camera over the top of the piano. i'd be really keen to see what people think and if they can tell me what i'm doing and how i'm doing it. I'll post something soon!

      @@capitolswingclassicjazzswi3048 Thanks! This may be a really tough question... but are you hearing those harmony notes in your head and just playing them as you hear them? Or are you thinking of the "chord of the moment"? I can kind of harmonize with a melody by thinking of which is the current chord... and adding the harmony below the melody using notes of that chord, but I'm getting the feeling that's not what you're doing?

    I love your style!! Did you learn to play by ear, or are you a note reader as well. My daughter has perfect pitch but I don't feel her teacher cares about that at all. She's 12 and started 2 years ago

    • @capitolswingclassicjazzswi3048
      @capitolswingclassicjazzswi3048  3 года назад +7

      Hi Sylvia, thanks for listening. I did initially learn to play from music, I started lessons at the age of 7. I think I remember playing a few notes on the piano at primary school and I was given the chance to have lessons with a local teacher in the village. I did do my grades (up to grade 6) but I always did my practise very quickly then used to put my parent's LP's on the record player and play along to them. I played along to Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Mantovani and lots of Hollywood musical sound tracks - I think that's where I picked up my ear for music and being able to improvise. I stopped lessons when I left school at 16 and joined up with a musician I met who played guitar and sang. We spent the next few years as a duo and band on the professional circuit in the eighties which was a great way to hone skills as a musician. It's quite hard to find a teacher that encourages improvisation and playing by ear as they tend to have gone through the grades and exam route themselves - you do benefit from a good grounding in lessons and disciplines like sight reading, scales, etc. If you've enjoyed please feel free to subscribe - I'm going to try recording some videos at home with a couple of camera angles so if your daughter is interested she can see the chord progressions and try to play along. The more you do it the better your ear becomes. Keep at it - having perfect pitch is a massive benefit!

Your daughter knows instinctively that the teacher only gets part of the musical picture.

      Steve- thanks for replying. Yes I'm a Yamaha fan too - CLP-340 but too heavy for gigging! Loved your phrasing, voicings and laid back style. delivered at just the right level of sophistication for the public to appreciate. ( Some Jazzers go over the top with clever upper structure harmonies ,which can be lost on the general public with closed ears) .Very pleasant to listen to. I'm sure many would like to hear more from you. I’m also always impressed with players with great memories, as I’m strictly a “Reader “ only. Regards.

      Hi. I’ve been asked a number of times over the years and I’ve never taught anyone. I suppose it’s been so long since I had lessons that I’ve forgotten how I play, like driving a car, I don’t think about it - what notes to play, what chords goes with which notes, chord progressions - I just do it. So it’s hard for me to go back to basics and teach people how to play. I’ve also probably got in to so many bad habits when I play as well 😂. The best teachers have a certain temperament as well which I don’t think I’ve got. I’m hoping the videos with some overhead shots will give any interested viewers some tips in playing cocktail piano and help them develop their own style.

    And finally ! : can you play The Birdie Song ?

    • @capitolswingclassicjazzswi3048

      I actually love "As Time Goes By' and i never mind playing anything for people - you never know what song or tune brings back memories for someone. As Time Goes By is probably a bit like asking a sax player to play 'Baker Street' 🤣 - i can imagine some pianists think it s a bit cheesy. I have had a jazz trio, and a function band over the years and we have been asked to play the birdie song at parties - and we've obliged. it is quite funny though when a guest at a wedding asks a function band comprising of 5 middle aged guys if they can can do anything by The Spice Girls .. true story!. I'm going to be recording some tracks at home in the next few weeks and i'll do 'As Time Goes By'. If you've enjoyed please feel free to subscribe and do keep enjoying!I
