Backyard Shed Full of Bees

- Bees had been living in this backyard shed for over two years and I was called to rescue them. Here's a quick look at the bee removal process and what it's like to be a beekeeper working every day to save the bees!
I just want to say: good on the tenants for calling you in to save the bees. So glad you were able to safely relocate them.
Your teaching so many of us that are scared of bees to love them and not be afraid! Thank you! Hope you do a Q&A sometime soon ☺️
I was walking in a 50 acre field today and the clover was in full bloom,,, flowering everywhere, but there wasn't a bee to be found! It's scary... no bees at all. Just 2 years ago you couldn't walk for the bees in that field.
that depends of the type of bees....these ones are super friendly
Tbh I was scared of bees until I watched one of her videos. Then I changed from wanting to be a vet to a beekeeper.
I also tried hunting for bees at school today. Bees are my favorite animal now. You can’t tell me I’m scared of bees now
But we should be scared? She has years of experience with bees. She recognizes the type, the mode they are in and other things. If we try to do that we'd hurt both them and ourselves.
She did one with WIRED. You can find it on here!
SHE SCOOPED UP BEES BARE-HANDED I- i'm in awe
So the tricks she doesn't show you is that when handling a hive of this size.
She has likely misted with 1:1 - sugar:water - this distracts the colony away from you seeking the queen as they deal with their sticky situation.
They don't swarm because they can't fly properly when sugar sprayed so they instead run when smoked. It's pretty telling when the smoke goes off and they scuttle about instead of fly away.
(When you smoke bees they will fly before running because of course they do it's faster)
This is also why she can scoop them unharmed because the sugary substance is a bigger distraction to each individual bee than the smoke or her moving about the hive to find the queen.
They simply cannot co-ordinate like they used to... because each bee is too busy trying to clean itself.
Would have been nice to have been told though.
@@XylozQuin Sugar water is a good tool but I don't think it was used here. I'm a rookie keeper and have scooped many a handful of bees, some unintentionally 🙄, without getting stung or having them fly off. The first one for me was with my own hive. It was relatively new and one of the first few times I had gotten into it. I hadn't worn gloves at all but this time was just in a veil so I wouldn't drop a box by getting stung in the face.
In moving the boxes around and examining the frames, I saw that there was laying going on but had not seen the queen. When I was putting it all back together, thousands of bees were hanging around a wooden box I used to set the deeps and super on. I wasn't suited up or gloved but all of the bees were maintaining that low calm hum. So I shrugged my shoulders and tried scooping. No problem but when I went to shake them off on the porch of the hive, many returned back to the box.
I finally got one scoop and the queen came running up my arm out from the ball I had in my hand. This was both wonderful and unnerving. Wonderful to see her in all of her beauty (Yes, I said "there she is!" Out loud) but unnerving as all of the other bees were soon heading up my arm 😳. So I reached up with my other hand, and when she crawled onto it I placed her on the porch and she ran back inside the hive. Now I was able to gently slide the other bees off of my arm and onto the porch. They all went inside. I only managed to get one more scoop before I noticed all of the others were marching back to the hive.
The unintentional scoop came when I went to pick up the lid and my hand felt the squirming of a ball which, in turn, was in my hand. These were shaken in from the top. All of that and I only got one sting. A bee had lit on the inside of my arm and when I lowered it, she was trapped and stung. The point being, some colonies are just chill and if you remain calm and deliberate, they remain calm and deliberate.
@@XylozQuin I think you fail to realize just how passive bees are.
They tend to just crawl around unless you hurt them.
@@XylozQuin, imagine assuming something without evidence.
@@XylozQuin Thank you for your explanation.
I war really wondering how she could do that..
THAT HOMING SIGNAL... WOW! So cool :) I learned something new today.
Thank you so much for following along here, Humphrey!
They were like "c'mon" let's go
Appreciate video content! Apologies for the intrusion, I would love your thoughts. Have you tried - Mahorrla Wooden Paradise Method (just google it)? It is a great exclusive product for building better sheds and woodworking minus the normal expense. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my old buddy Taylor after a lifetime of fighting got amazing success with it.
@@TexasBeeworks i just found you from the tiktok that went viral online. i hope you make more bee vids. i have a garden and loads of water and always love seeing them streaming in from where ever their natural hives are in my suburb. you can literally see a line of them flying in and out to multiple locations in a line. love bees.
The Unintentional ASMR is strong with this one!
I was just thinking that! LOL! Love your channel by the way. I’m a subscriber!

Seriously...I am a grown 40 year old man and I could fall asleep to these videos every single night. Nothing sexual...her voice is just beyond relaxing.
Sincerely my favorite bee keeper on RUclips so far; the reverence she shows the bees and her passion that beams through are just so perfect! Keep up your amazing work 💕
Hi
I so love your compassion and love for the Bees. Thank you ❤
I agree!
Your voice is calm and measured, no wonder the bees seem so at ease when you deal with them. It's a form of meditation, and I feel great after seeing/hearing your videos. Oh, and thanks for taking care of the bees; we need them, they need people like you.
I love this woman and her videos! What a character she is. She really makes me care about bee’s just seeing her passion for them ❤ well done young lady!
It is always so impressive to see how gently you can get the bees moved. You must be a “bee whisperer”! 🥰👍
I see some nasty comments here but thankfully they are drowned out by the kind , positive ones. I love watching these videos, so calming and informative. What an amazing woman she is, saving the bees!
A true American hero saving our planet one hive at a time.
I am so glad I stumbled on your videos. I am absolutely fascinated by these bees and the beautiful hives they create. And I have learned so much about them. I am hooked. Thank you for sharing these amazing treasures of nature.
My husband's grandfather was a beekeeper...he loved his bees and would sit out by the hives and smoke a pipe. The bees would land on him and fly around him. He wasn't scared of being stung - it does happen, but he didn't panic. He was very calm around them and most times didn't wear full beekeeping gear (sometimes a hat and veil - sometimes not).
It's a symbiotic relationship and I love what you all do for bees!
You are amazing. It's no wonder the bees are so calm around you. You calm me just by watching you! Love your way.
Thank you for sharing. You show the world how being kind and attentive makes a hard move easier.
You cannot tell me she's not a fae. This is some straight up druid magic if I've ever seen it.
Nah she's just a disney princess xD seriously tho these honeybeed are very crucial to our environment and thanks to beekeepers like Erika, we maintain a stable ecosystem for every organisms. Every beekeepers are as crucial as a prince or princess ^^
Underrated comment.
Maybe for her 3rd year she will begin to wear a costume and write storylines... I saw her old videos they are very regular. So she is evolving her style which is cool
She has the gift of bee whispering. So beautiful
Watching this was like a meditation. I can imagine being in the middle of the colony with them flying around you.
Watching you handle those bees was just riveting. It might sound off but who else enjoys the a surprising sensation of a bee sting? I can’t help but always laugh after being stung.
Thank you for keeping bees safe and alive. You are very special.
Every spring my home is protected by carpenter bees I must keep talking to them. Guards at every door, they have a hive at my shed and it’s hard for me to even get inside the shed for lawnmower and tools. Once my large lilacs bloom it seams their gone until next spring. I leave them bee and just let them live. All bees are important to plants and crops.
I'll keep saying this: I totally admire Ms. Thompson and all who can do this and find joy in what they're doing 😊

Thank you Erika! I am a Telecommunications Engineer and I don't know why but I enjoy so much watching you work with bee's. ❤️
You have an incredible amount of patience and demonstrate an equal amount of care for the bees. Amazing!
I appreciate how careful you were at removing the flooring. I was a little worried how you’d get to the hive without going under the shed.
How did she not get stung?! That’s incredible! What an awesome bee keeper!
I realised that I watch these videos just to feel the "warm calm" of such a happy ending..
Saving the bees.
Ur voice is amazing and ur teaching us about the bees. Great job beautiful lady. Keep up the great work.
The great thing about all these videos is that they’ve made me lose any fear of being stung by bees. Of course that doesn’t mean I charge after bees now. But now I think about always trying to help them if I spot them.
So Awesome what you bee keepers do ! I have always wanted bees but never have got any, but pretty awesome what you do, is a awesome hobby !
I like it that you don’t leave bees behind…your patience is appreciated! Thank you,
My 10 year old and I love watching your videos. We learned so mush about bees from your content. Keep up the great work!
You are amazing! I watched many of your shorts and have been impressed with you calm and knowledgeable descriptions.
Thanks for all your compassion!
I thank you for saving the bees. With all the pollution and poisons in the air, it has decimated the bee colonies. You are an Angel for doing this work. The best part is: you love doing this work which is a huge plus.
I was just gonna say…incredibly wonderful ASMR voice. But also incredible what she does. I like people who work mindfully with animal species. She’s compassionate towards bees.
"Another GREAT day of saving the bees" - love it. Your videos and narration are becoming almost therapeutic. Thank you!
I could listen to your voice to put me to sleep! It’s so calming!
You do great work lady. Calm as a cucumber!! Love it!
I love your technique for relocating bees. after watching some other videos I realized how intrusive most people are when they’re doing this. they use vacuums and bee repellents They just throw all of the contents into buckets or coolers And then decide what to give back to the Bees and what not to. I even saw one video where someone put multiple hives with multiple queens together because they were found in the same area and he assumed they must’ve been related at some point. I just appreciate the way you do things I wanted to thank you for that.
Bees are so beautiful and gentle it amazes me how close they really are to us. No wonder why they sting. We are much larger than them which is already Intimidating, let alone threatening to kill them. I think bees are so beautiful and fragile. They make me so happy as if they remind me of myself with my tough but fragile self. What she's doing is amazing and genuinely makes me smile.
I admire the work that you do. Honeybees need all the support they can get!
If everyone knew how important bees are to so many fruits and vegetables, they'd do everything in their power to save them. Hopefully.
Actually in the US, honey bees are an invasive species that are competing with native pollinators.
@@DancingBugBoi There were no honey bees in my garden this year -- my total harvest of 3 underpolinated (deformed) strawberries this year reflects that. BTW, you CAN save BOTH. Bees are often flower specific & native bees often prefer native species, which almost nobody plants, and code enforcement rails against with hefty fines in many communities. Get rid of your lawn, plant clover, dandilions, buttercups, broadleaf plantain, butterfly weed, chicory, etcetera and recreate woodland or other locally appropriate wild habitats with locally flowering species. (Be forewarned, while many are lovely to see and have medicinal and practical uses, others have unpleasant properties (deadly toxicity to any age or threat to skin & eyes around small children, for example) and are nearly impossible to be rid of, so do your homework first. Good luck!
at 3:57 during the homing signals, it looked like the one lil guy on the edge was helping others up!!😂🥺
It's a bouncer, checking IDs!
I also want to say that bees have an incredible ability to be revived. I have a farm here in South Australia, and in the summer, its hot. The bees come to drink from my chickens water bowl, and some, unbeknownst to me, drown.
I try to avoid any of this happening by putting in rocks, floating pine needles, sticks or anything so that they can at least have something to cling on or better, just float on top of.
Unfortunately, not all make on these things, and I even after a bee has been in the water for hours, I scoop her out and let her dry. I check on her, and sometimes, (depending on how long they have been in the water for) there may be no movement for more than 20 minutes.
I help them by nudging their legs, antennae, wings etc... anything to help bring them back to consciousness.
Anyway I lost the rest of my comment, that I wrote, and what I said was that every bee that I have rescued from the water over the last 3 years, has survived- no matter how long they have been in the water. All but one bee (even though she regained consciousness) did not make it through the night. (She was obviously too weak to fly back to her colony that night and I kept her inside for warmth). I am constantly in awe of their nature, their flawless cohesion to work together for the preservation of the whole. We as humans, could learn so so much from them. Or any insect within a working, functioning colony. I am touched watching this, and seeing how much empathy and respect you have for them.
Great bee videos, thank you. Yes, I've dealt with wild hives and the swarming of bees, incredible.
I love this channel but I could not even consider scooping all those bees with my hand. Thankyou for sharing and looking after the bees.
Love the way, you treat the bees so lovingly 🐝⚜️💕
As a beekeeper I appreciate your content shedding light on our world. It saddens me to see the sexist crazy comments but keep doing what you're doing. Those girls appreciate you giving them a home to make liquid gold in. Beekeeping is the absolute opitome of female power.
I haven't seen any sexist comments. What were people saying?
It's "epitome" BTW, and what "sexist crazy comments"?
I've followed this lady for a while and only ever see great comments respecting the work this lady does! I think the sexism is in your head!
@@jimmyswindles7414 mansplain much 🙄
idk but she is smoking fucking hot!
So enjoy watching these videos. I saw one where a man sucked up the bees with a vacuum I was shocked as he had no concern for the bees but kept talking about the honey. Of course he was taking them back but I prefer your gentle ways.
Every hive is a work of art,so beautiful
You have a heart of gold. I always save bees as well. I know how important to the environment they are.
I have watched dozens of this woman's bee rescues and I still have no idea how she does it without a suit. Amazing. I look horrified every time I watch one but they are all absolutely remarkable.
Wow lady you are so good at what you do got to be impressed yes erika really appreciate your love of bees and your humbleness fantastic
Thank you Bee Angel! ❤
Lovely to see you there.
More of you please
Bees are such innocent creatures. People see ti as threats, or mean, but they’re really not. Thank you so much for doing what you do
Greetings from Morocco for honey and bee lovers
I love everything about you. Keep up the great work, you fabulous gentle soul.
Thanks a lot for caring about bees 🙏
Of corse this isn’t anything we’d have learned in school, at least not to this extent, but we learned how vital it was to have bees. This is so informative and educational. Thank you for your time and effort into making these videos and for sharing 🇺🇸👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I love your "another day of saving the bees" 💓💓💓
Please make more videos . Maybe some detailed teachings? You have a nice cool collective voice and energy so it is absolutely pleasure watching and listening your videos 🙏🏻💗🐝
God bless you for your vital work. I love how respectful and considerate that you are toward the bees. Awesome video.
You’re so cool, calm and collected.
The scooping of bees to relocate them by hand is probably the thing she does that most makes my sphincter pucker up.
I'm surprised this took only one box! Though I'm not great at depth judgement and such. Amazing work!
She’s such an amazing person
Hi
Imagine how satisfying that would feel when she scoops up the bee's
They are truly amazing creatures though!
Good job, I wish i had a bee hive it would be very cool!
I had the oddest sensation of bees around me as I watched this. Gorgeous work.
I just saw you from TikTok today, and I am blown away by what you do. Holy crap. You're awesome.
And there she is saving the Queen and Scooping Bees!
Incredible
I don't know what's more impressive you working those bees like a rockstar or looking like one while you are working them 🎉
You have the ability to make my biggest phobia relaxing
as much as i hate bees I will never kill one
I know right?
Beautiful! Proud of your job and the existence of bees ❤
That's a awesome channel here. The content, the voice, the video. Got to know it from reddit and I am loving it. I have some wild bees my own ("Jataí", in Brazil, doesn't sting). Two, in fact. One has almost 7 years old, got it from my mom. The other naturally came to live with us, and now I arranged a place for them. Thanks for sharing!
Your videos are soothing, wholesome and instructive
I love your videos.
This channel needs to go viral right away!!!!!
This woman is astonishingly beautiful, her voice, her composure, everything about her what a beautiful creation from God, her and the bees
That takes some guts.
I was so sacred that I thought the bees would come out of my phone screen.
Hat's off to you.
All of your videos are superior!! I'm sorry I'm so afraid of them 😢🫣☹️🤣
Thanks for the great video, Erika!
I love your voice... It calms me.
As a kid, I used to be terrified of bees until just a few years ago. These videos are so amazing and educational, thanks!
I loved watching this! You have a wonderful job and I'm so glad you help out these bees 🐝❤🙌
your reaction to the hive @ :51 is priceless
You are amazing! The Bee’s have a good friend in you.
Everytime I see someone like this I remember the legend that bees don't sting royalty
Bees are so amazing!!! Thank you for saving these crucial pollinators ♥️♥️
@ ...they were going to be exterminated. Instead she relocated them to a place where they can safely live.
I absolutely love ur videos because the clam me and I love how ur helping the bees
I like your work, The bees are always good to see here too.
She is saving important bees. It's not like she is removing underground yellow jackets like I foolishly did over 50 years ago. Good work!
i walked 5 feet away from a beehive in side a telephone pole once and got stung. i just dont get how she does it. amazing. i love her
Thank you for saving their lives, thank you.
you could do a PhD on this topic with the local bees! these observations are invaluable!
GOD i love bees. im glad to see that you cared a lot about this hive instead of having a violent process done to remove them.
You are really the BEST at what you do!!!
I live at high altitude New Mexico. My focus is on providing abundant food for honey bees: a 50ft long hedge of Purple Russian Sage, about 7ft tall. This hedge is filled with bees all summer and into Fall. Magical numbers.
You’re awesome! Ty for doing this important work❤
You could be an excellent audiobooks narrator or voice actor. You have calming and hypnotic voice.
I feel bees all around myself when I watch this
This is soooo interesting. I'm still somewhat amazed by how you're able to do this (usually) without protective gear and are able to hand scoop them. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for saving the bees
