Strength training is so important! As we get older the strain on our joints can cause eventual injury. By building muscles you will help to protect those joints and it will allow you to run longer in your life. One thing that I would add to what you said Suzie, is that you should also do strength training in your legs. Lunges and squats will build your leg muscles all around your knees. As you know, as we age we are more susceptible to knee and ankle injuries. We see it all the time myself included lol. When I had my injury last year I went to the physical therapist and realized that my lack of doing lunges and squats had done me in. Another thing that is extremely important and you did mention is the foam rolling and the stretching. But it also you need to warm up. As we get older the warm-up becomes really important it kind of sneaks by you you don’t even realize it and then you risk injury because you’re in your mid 40s and you haven’t been warming up for the past several years because you’re used to being young! I am 46. I run, swim, and bike. Do push ups daily, except when doing long runs. I spend more time on recovery now and I am a little slower especially on hills. Keep safe everyone! You don't stop playing when you get old. You get old when you stop playing
funny enough Dan Shevock talked about some of his rules for older runners. I left a few of my choices as a comment over there....... in a nutshell i don`t care about strength, about speed ,about times....i care about joy and happiness, staying connected to nature and myself, go outside and enjoy the wonders of nature.....i just run

I'd like to run more often and faster, but it spikes my cortisol a lot. And that has some undesirable effect on my body. So I do short and lighter runs, just for the mental benefits. The same happens with sprints or HIIT training. Higher the intensity higher the cortisol.
I am a 30 years runner. I became slower when I reached 48. from 4 mins per km to 5 or 6 mins per kims. Then I get tired easily compare to my younger years.
Excellent vid, Suz, but It sounds like we have to work harder and do more as we age! Ugh! Why can’t I just sit on the sofa and still perform as well as I did a decade ago? 😢

Our A goal is to smile as much as we can. And thanks about the comment. I found my MOJO with Imovie these days!
Hi Suzie, excellent video as always! As a 61 yr old runner, I 100% agree with everything you said! I certainly wish I did more consistent strength training through my late 40s and 50s, with more core work and also hips and glutes, but it is never too late and I am definitely doing that now🤓 I would also add that I learned as I ran through my late 40s and 50s that I didn't focus enough on keeping my calves and ankles strong and flexible as I definitely lost strength and flexibility in those two areas and had issues with calf strain injuries. To your last point, while it is tough to admit, I had to let go of the fact that I would never be as fast and as strong as I was in my 30s. As the old saying goes "comparison is the thief of joy" I realized not only should I not compare myself to other runners, but also not compare myself to when I was 25-30 yrs younger! Anyway, just my $.02 worth having the benefit of hindsight as I run into my 60s! Wishing you a very happy and amazing birthday week and thanks again for the excellent content of your videos! We decay with age, that is a rule of life 😊. We can try and do so in the best way possible so we get to 80 in better shape. I'd love to be able to run in my 70s, even if only 5ks.

That's a sensible change... although I know people in their 50s who can do 2 in a week. I think it really depends on the runner. BUT, the percentage of people who can do 2, I am pretty sure decreases with age.
Great points, especially habits, strength, core, I'm in the way over 40 club, and have a decade on you birthday girl, one thing I'll add is ...patience...even at my age, you have to be patient, slow and steady 🐢 have a wonderful birthday! 🎉
Over 60, DGAF, no rules except keep doing what got me this far.🤣I couldn't "train like a pro" at any age because pros are freaks of nature and that's why they're pros, and what works for them didn't work for me. And what works for me might not work for someone else. That's mattered more to me than my age. Great stuff, Suzie!!
I couldn't train like a pro either. But it's possible I love running more than some of them. You mention something interesting, what works for others might not work for you. That is 100% true. Great advice! As a 42 year old runner, shifting my mind set has been very helpful. Rather than racing my 32 version! I now think in terms of age group PBs and lifetime bests. Still think I have sone of the later in me, but feel progress in the age group. Ps There is no way you're 49!! 😄
When you get really old it probably gets near impossible to find a coach who knows how to optimize training. The line between overtraining and under becomes quite thin. Somebody who has a proven record turning 70 year olds into winners. Probably somebody like that exists where big marathons are run, like NYC or Boston. I have to look into that. So over 50 you need to get more picky about your coach.

@@IRunThings water retention and more fat. I also experience less flexibility when I do longer runs (dynamic stretching beforehand. )
