Quantum Break | An Examination of Chaos Theory

- Hello everyone. The Dean of Gaming University here finally bringing Quantum Break back into the rotation. One of the most pervasive themes throughout the story was telegraphed outside the front doors of the Riverport Library. Between the Quantum Ripples, Junction Points, and character philosophy, the story of this game is an Examination of Chaos Theory.

5:51 Ground Zero was never assumed to be the cause for The End of Time, as the Ground Zero event was the accidental opening of the countermeasure in 2010. This is what flooded Will's workshop with chronon particles and gave Paul "time-sickness" (aka set him on the fast track to becoming a shifter). What was assumed by Paul to be the cause of The End of Time was the Fracture, the malfunctioning of the University time machine in 2016 (likely caused by interference from Hatch), and rightfully so, since it did cause more and more frequent stutters, the last one at the final boss battle already lasting a very long time and maybe time would already not have started up again at that point without Will's and Jack's interference. However, since we know for a fact the The End of Time does come about in 2021, either the countermeasure did not work as intended and only post-poned and slowed down the effects of the Fracture, or there was a second fracture after the end of the game.
Seriously, this channel might be the only thing tiding me over the dearth of new Remedy content.

The best part about this game is that it is possible Paul Serine genuinely saw the end of time. He described it to Dr Amaral as happening years in the future. So it is possible that the real end of time is coming, Will hinted at it at the end of the game by questioning if Paul was wrong.
My hypothesis is the end of time is still coming. Everyone just thought it was caused by this Ground Zero event so everything they were doing is meaningless to preventing that future.
I’ve been playing this game for the first time recently, and I love the abilities. It Lowkey is the blueprint for a Flash video game, so many mechanics could be reworked for Flash time
Never had a chance to play this game, so that was fascinating
I wish we can get this involved in the Control/Wake universe.

I fully expect the eventual sequel to break it's own time mechanics completely. Jack's going to go back and get beth creating 2 alternate timelines that you could possibly play and maybe that is what caused the fracture since we don't actually know what did.
That would be a fun way to handle it. The further Jack develops that Chronon Syndrome he may be able to control the shifts and move between realities.
That is a fascinating video! I have a similar question and idea beginning hinted at in my Psychonauts story.

I wonder if the end of time might be something like the creation of an alternate dimension/reality? Similar to the Dark Place that Alan ended up in, or the numerous dimensions that Jesse discovered while retaking the Bureau like the Astral Plane or the various thresholds letting extradimensional entities in like the mold and the mirror world? A lot of these worlds are alien and hostile to human life. The Dark Place being the best example but the Mold one and the Astral plane are other prime examples. The End of Time is arguably the most hostile to Human Life, freezing it entirely.
As far as I can see the End of Time exists in this reality, not a threshold like the Dark Place. Personally, I think that Martin Hatch will be working on something that causes it
@@GamingUniversityUoG Yeah I meant that Shifters are trying to turn Earth into this kind of hostile reality. A timeless reality that they govern over like the Dark Presence and the other Dark Entities of the Dark Place. I don't think there was any direct FBC files related to Control, besides that one mention of Martin Hatch by Dylan Faden and that one door we pass in the Overlook Motel.
Admittedly the Oldest House is a very big place and it's entirely possible we just didn't find the files relating to that particular AWE?
Just played this game for the first time last month and I'm sorry it took me so long to do so. This game is great!
The interpretation I took on the difference of when the End of Time was that it was Dr. Amaral who was incorrect. From the perspective of "Time cannot be rewritten," that means that the accident in the events of Quantum Break never caused the End of Time, that was a mistaken assumption on Paul's part. But his prediction of WHEN is still accurate. He and Beth have been to the End of Time and it cannot be averted. What we see as the solution to stopping the End of Time is only the one that stopped the one that would have happened on Amaral's timeline- but pulling back to look at all of time, it never would have happened here.
This is confusing and I'm probably writing it wrong! The End of Time that Beth and Paul entered will always happen in 2021 (Looks like it got better since I'm writing this!) Believing the timeline has been altered and that we are now safe could be exactly what leads to the actual incident- after all, Martin Hatch is still out there wanting to make it happen. That would have at least given a sequel the eventual wiggle room to have another major event to deal with. Set five years after the game would have given development time to happen if MIcrosoft asked for it, too.

I 100% agree. The end of time will happen at the same time it always did. This event that they fixed would have causes it to happen 5 years earlier. But it was fixed so the timeline remains intact. That being said I still feel that shifters can move into other timelines but there is a rigid of self-consistancy within each one that can't be broken.
Someone in the last video pointed out that both Paul and Beth died and saw the end of time, so maybe they *literally* experienced the end of time for themselves. I'm not sure, but I thought it was interesting.
Underrated game tbh. I thought it was just as good as control. Both still havent topped Alan Wake yet though.
Still a great game I agree. Alan Wake will always be top tier for me personally. I'm always more focused on story than gameplay though.

I wonder how far google’s quantum computer has come to predicting modeled climate data with accuracy. Wonder if we humans can be modeled and predicted as well. Being unpredictable is more likely to be a skill for survival in the future, especially when your phone already knows what ads to push.
As part of the research for this episode I read that 8 days is the cutoff for relatively accurate weather modeling even with today's supercomputers. What they do is project multiple 'possible' models and as new data arises they erase the ones that no longer apply.

I would says seing the variables is not impossible for humans, it is just.... difficult, especially from the ego.
That is what math is at the end of the day. The forced of gravity and motion dictated by knowing the variables in the equation. Knowing ALL variables for what will happen I still hold isn't possible. Tomorrow something may happen that adds a new variable so you can't know it today.
Man I really hope Remedy can get back the rights to QB and incorporate into its Remedyverse. It would be a great addition, albeit somewhat problematic with respect to casting for Beth / Jesse.
Dude if they can get their rights back in this I'd love to see the awkwardness of Nick/Dylan and Jessie/Beth meeting up

I’ve always believed either two things caused the fracture:
Paul going back to try and save Beth. Most likely plan was to be shown in the next game.
Or
Hatch time traveling was the actual event that started the fracture and ground zero was just an amplifier. Hatch states he time traveled via a natural made time travel device. Not a man made one.
Fingers crossed on Remedy's current RCU plans will let them get rights on this game back from Microsoft. This way we can finally get the answers to this question.

So I know the video is an older one (so is the game), but I only recently had a chance to play it, so anyways. At 6:27 you mention an unknown event caused the end of time, so I'm curious to if my theory could be correct or if I missed something. I always thought it was the usage of the university time machine (the activation of it's core) that caused it. Since we know that they had the wrong variables and wrong data (Will told them this) I just assumed they broke the Meyer-Joyce Field when they used that core and then caused the Field to start breaking down, leading to the end of time. It still fits with your Belief vs. Truth theory, since Paul couldn't exit the machine and had to continue through it, he had no idea that it left everything in Zero State, he probably believed time kept flowing as it had beforehand after he left. And since it hadn't happened yet when he went back to 1999, no one would be able to tell him any different (except of course possibly Hatch, who was not his ally anyway).
We know it was a fracture, but I'm wondering if it was THE fracture? Again, I probably missed something but just wanted to throw that out there. Love all these videos on the Remedy games!!!
what about something that Paul saw in the end of time so i think it's because when you enter time machine you came out from the time machine and if you're set time when there is not an active time machine, you might end up in the 5 dimensions or somewhere else so the time didn't end up but time traveling cus damaged to Joyce field.

We can dream. But this is a different universe set in the RCU. The cab driver I'd also the actor who plays Dylon.
Sean durrie also from quantum break as the taxi driver but he plays fadens brother in control I think control and quantum are bound to each other look at it Courteney hope and Sean durrie both played characters in quantum break and control something smells like both these dimensions characters are going to cross but Serene and jack Joyce will come later it's just conincedence but something happening between quantum break and controls world

There is also an X-Files episode called Improbable that somewhat messes with the idea. Burt Reynolds plays God.
I just finished Quantum Break. Why end of time dindn't happened? Where was Paul and Beth trapped if not future? What was the event that actually was different from the patch that lead to end of time? This game is amazing, but ending don't give all that much obious answers...
Paul and Beth were for sure in the future for this End of Time place. The issue was Paul presumed the fracture at ground Zero caused this Zero State. However, the true cause is something we haven't seen yet. Something that likely happens after the end of the game and was intended to be the central plot of the sequel. since we never got it the plotline seems abandoned for now.

Spoiler ahead for this game and the tv show "Dark", if you haven't seen Dark, then don't read.
- Fun fact: min 3:57 Hatch intentionally sabotaged the equations in Paul's model in order to cause the Fracture. do you guys remember Hatch was standing outside when you got out of the taxi at the beginning of the game (most of us missed that)? Hatch is trying to build a world without time. that his goal from the beginning.
- As for why Paul couldn't see the future clearly, here is my theory, since he was a shifter, I believe it means he is seeing all the futures of himself from multiple universes not just his, so he is seeing multiple futures, that's why he can't confirm what's happening.
- Now this brings back my next theory, can Jack save Beth? no, he can't in his universe, since he saw her die, he can't change what happened in the past, but he can travel to the past of the alternative universe to save her. and that what would've been the plot of QB2 if there was one.
I'm watching the TV show Dark, and this TV show is almost a clone of the story of this game.

The intricacies of any action are complex. The reactions numerous yet mostly predictable.
Mostly predictable in the short term and more predictable as time goes on. I believe the cutout for meteorology was 8 days I believe. After that it's more accurate to look at a history and gauge trends from 20 years ago than use current data.
