If a driver does deliveries all the time with the same truck. It’s easy. Not to mention you have to have spreader chains. And most trucks are different. Every driver could do this with practice. Most don’t do deliveries all day.
@@wademills1616 I have seen countless drivers spread stones. It has been my experience that every driver cannot do this... even with practice. I practice playing the drums a lot, but I'll never be Phil Collins :)
They backed him up to the right spot. Then he just had to raise the box a bit and pop open the gate. Its not hard but there are lots of crap drivers out there that don't even know why there are chains on the end gate.
Some folks complain about a driver being old and slow but some of them save a lot of time by doing a real quality job. You can dump stone fast but make more work when it comes to spreading it out and leveling it off. Keep up the good work.
I found an employer who does not care how long it takes for me to do my job. Now I can take pride in my job, make people happy and do the job once properly rather than spinning my wheels. Honestly, the guy who shorted my hours every paycheck and treated me like garbage ended up being a few loads short on his projects. He even claimed I was a little on the light side, but little did he know just how light. Maybe by about 20 less hours a month should do sir..
Yep. Back in my rookie year I was asked to spread gravel on a driveway. I didn’t even know this could be done. I thought the chains were for securing the gate if the locks failed. The man said “can you spread it nice and even?” Me in my rookie confidence “Absolutely!” After dumping 4 three foot tall piles he lost his mind. I’m lucky I didn’t get my ass kicked that day! “And don’t you ever come back!” It still rings loudly in my ear today.
I just tell them I can't spread it but I'll try. Even though I can spread it. That way there is no high expectation, and they are happy when it's done. I took the chains off my truck so they would be less likely to ask . If you tell them you can spread it, they have to high of expectations expecting you to do all the work. Once the material starts to come out, just drive forward in a low gear, and that spreads it well enough to pretty it up with a machine. Was just doing parking lot/driveway yesterday. Never had any complaints. Most people are just to cheap to rent or hire a machine
Props to that driver I've been driving dumb truck for a little over 12yrs and I've seen a lot of drivers with as many years experience as this guy and can't spread that good 🤘🤘
Some people are at a job for 40 years, and end up with 1 year of experience 40 times. And on the other hand, you have people like this driver, who have been at it for 40 years and have 40 years of experience to show for it.

I know that house... Job actually looks fair before the job, but once done, you could really tell someone has a great bit of pride in their craft. It looks nice !!!
Impressive accuracy. You can count the pebbles that fell on the pavement without taking your shoes off. I couldn't do that well laying a flower bed for granny with a bag of pebbles.
My dad di this once. He doesn't drive a dump truck for a living but hes an otr truck driver but one time he borrowed a dump truck from his work and he did our driveway AND our neighbors who lived in front pf us
This is what I love doing. It's challenging jobs like this that make it fun. I did a farm last season with a tandem belly dump to get ready for a wedding. It looked amazing until the owner decided to try and tidy us the end of the driveway and a low spot on a bend and screwed them up entirely.
Many contract haulers for quarries employ drivers working part time. All they can do is drive the truck and dump the load. Ask them to spread and if they say I'll do my best, you're better off spreading yourself. Getting tones of gravel out of the grass and out of ditches etc is frustrating. Let them dump in small piles down the drive and you can spread and grade from there. Asking the trucking company up front for a driver that can spread has been one that has been met with,"all we do is deliver and dump the pile where you want it" The old days of customer service are "gone".
truer words cannot be said about having a experienced truck driver to deliver your gravel I have had a bad experience in the past by somebody who went to our local church who thought he was a truck driver by trade delivered the truck load to our house open the gate too far and dump all the gravel of one straight line instead of evenly distributing the Gravel throughout my driveway so yes always hire Inexperienced truck driver to drop your gravel
I'm a truck driver for about 10 years now and the last 5 have been on a 10 wheeler dump and doing that is pretty easy its being that accurate with it is the hard part
@digdrivediy being accurate is hard It's like shooting a rifle it's doesn't take much too pull the trigger it takes something to be steady enough to hit something And trusting and knowing what your using is what's more important
My main pet peeve abt my boss is he is a big proponent of "dump it all off to the side, I'll spread it with the skid steer" instead of letting the driver use his skills to save us some work.
Yep the right driver can tailgate spread it where you don't even need to make a pass over it with anything. I have had the wrong drivers that dump a third of it in the right in a pipe before they start moving and block the road until you can get a dozer there to push it out.
Good driver! I've not done much spreading like that. However, as a driver, it isn't my job to do yours, unless contracted to do so. As an equipment operator, more power to the driver. If you are going to do it, be good at it! As a driver that seldom has enough open overhead to do this, it's pretty impressive. A good driver can save you all kinds of time and money, a bad one can cost you plenty. Same can be said for equipment operators.
too many people look down on people without a University degree and dont appreciate the skill and time they can save behind what they see as an unskilled job
I drive a dump truck and no I don't have 40 years of experience and I can't do what he just did in this video. I'm sure this man gets paid great but I don't get paid by the job. I get paid by the loads. I will spread rock if need be don't get me wrong but when you are an owner operator and have more then one place then you don't have time to take and be precise. As the next customer might not be as happy that you took so long to get there with the load they ordered. I literally was dropping and going for one customer as that's what he wanted. In order to get where he was I had to go into the busiest part of town for every run and he asked why I was late I said in a calmly manner, sir the way I have to go it's really busy with traffic, I get here as fast as I can. He said well I need them faster and he kept on and on so being an owner operator I said well you can take your quarter ton truck and go get the other 5 loads of 22 ton you need of rock. Have a nice day. He did apologized for being rude. I do this because a company I worked for told me that I was in charge of my truck, even though it wasn't my own, they told me if a customer gets rude with you or you don't feel comfortable with what they are requesting, decline the request and bring the load back to the query. I have never had to bring one back. Yet...
I used to shoot sand on dirt roads with a belly dump, set cruise at 42 mph open gate 10” and shoulder to shoulder it laid down perfection,,, mile after mile load after load until the job is finished,,, done correctly no need for motor grader!!
Why didn't you put down any geo textile fabric under the base rock? There did not seem to be much Stone dust in the top coat of crushed stone. Therefore, it will probably drain really well but not pack down very solid.
Anytime I get a driver that lays gravel out that smooth I always tip them then next time you call he’ll be the one to take your call. How many hours with a tractor did that save versus some of the nightmares I have seen with big piles at different points in the driveway.
Sounds to me like you guys better have given him a $100 bill, not for his time or equipment, but for knowing how to spread it without issues or unnecessary communication. Not to mention the time saved vs a rookie driver. Know your worth and don't take less than you're worth, EVER!
