#YamahaDX1 #DX1 #Synthesiser
Not only is it after touch,,, it's polyphonic after touch. This thing was light years ahead of it's time.
But not ahead of the cs80 which also had poly aftertouch and came before the dx1 :P
@@bojanarezina2352 Yes, but the DX1 is an FM synthesizer, the CS80 not
@@rcz2439 we're talking about poly aftertouch here buddy
@@bojanarezina2352 Did I say it was the first? Jeez. 🙄

Dr.Mix hears one note:
"ah, yes! this is a good sound!"
entire song flows out of his fingers
Looking at his body movements, looks like the flow ricocheted back to his shoulders. (At the beginning of the video)
you mean that all Dr mix music are generated from the Big Bang ?
Right? How can a human just hear one tone and then play a whole song flawlessly. Amazing!
At 5:45 it's amazing, the song was beautiful.
Yes.He's the Bob Ross of keyboards!Happy little notes!
This is like going to your friend's house and he's got all the coolest toys.
Or like going to your friends house and his dad just has a bunch of vintage synths that he would sell $100 dollars for. Lol can you imagine getting this or an OB-8 for 100 bucks???
@@TheProdigyAccordion nobody getting that
If I want to cheer myself up I come and watch Claudio play, he's always smiling and enthusiastic about everything he does! He''s also amazing on those keys!
Great video! I absolutely love my DX-1, I use it practically every day in my studio too, coupled with a DX-5. Layring 4 sounds at once is truly amazing on these!
I can't play a single note but I am drooling over that DX-1. What a machine!
Sounds like 80's to early 90's tv show intros.
Don't think I've ever seen Claudio this happy demo'ing a synth before! :) What a classic and rare beast, you are truly enjoying it!
Claudio: Plays a piano/brass velocity patch
My brain: *IT'S CASIOPEA TIME !!!*
ikr. He Minoru Mukaiya used the DX1 and had three dx7s synced with it.
@@theshyguy1580 he also used that 8 Dx7 in rack with the kx76 + kx88
@@testohtoby Yeah, The TX816. He uses two of them, having the KX88/KX76 control both rack modules.
Casiopea fan outside a casiopea video? Never thought id see that :D
Minoru Mukaiya played an Yamaha GS1 (the father of DX1) on Mint Jams.
Never thought I'd listen to Libertango played on FM Synthesis. Argentinian proud. oh, and those strings re unbelievable
Imo this is one of the best looking vintage synthesizers. So massive !
That piazzolla bit was great by the way !
Holy grail of synths... I love it since I first heard Brothers in Arms.
Thank you for sharing this Claudio, it's a real joy to listen you play.
omg that piano sound takes me back, and wow the father of FM synthesis, so beautiful, the synth with a soul, correction, with soul, makes me cry seeing it
@RedBluePill to true, Synclavier made famous by Michael Jackson no less, however if I am right the DX1 came before it, I think it came out a whole year before
@@kohgamingchannel9007 The Synclavier started it all for digital FM in 1977

Rhiemann Geometry yeah it’s sad...
Why am I on my alt account?
Sadly takes on a different meaning after her death. Was the greatest love of all a drug addiction, or did the drugs kill the love?
Love how Doctor is still smiling during play:))) He enjoys every note:)
The begginer of all Yamaha DX Series, Legendary and exquisite 80's sounds!!!!! Hugs from México!!!!
I think this was released same time as dx7. Basically an uber dx7
This thing was one of the cornerstones of sounds in the ‘80s. A DX1, a LinnDrum, and the CMI’s ‘ORCH5’ hit are like the quintessential ‘80s starter pack.
The unstable stand makes its own after-touch effect.
I can remember seeing the DX-1 featured in the Yamaha catalogs in the 80s, it was a dream keyboard. How could anyone not lust after those weighted keys and those stylish wooden cheeks.
sounds like my dx7 - amazing that they squessed all the power of this synth into the affordable dx7 and made such a classic with it
I knew the DX1 as a great synthesizer with a sophisticated design. The sound is good quality.
I can't express how much I love to hear you playing these masterpieces songs!
The DX-1 was the quietest (less hiss) of the 1st DX series. I had a DX-5 which was the same as a DX-1 without polyphonic aftertouch, weighted keys, or balanced outputs. It was a lot noisier than the DX-1 and a little noisier as the DX-7 but that was because there were two of them but aside from hiss, it was smoother sounding. It might have had better converters. I also had the TX rack with the full x8 TF-1 modules. The TX series hissed the most because there were 8 DX-7s and they didn't sound as smooth as the 5. The DX-1 is still the cleanest sounding DX first gen and it was probably just because it had a killer opamp analog mixer section but IDK. It just was. The cleanest sounding DX today is a good VSTi version. I haven't used the new UVI but I've used older emulations and I was impressed.
DX5 has got balanced outputs as well as unbalanced, 3 each.
I have a TX816 and it's much quieter than my DX7. Also, it got individual outs for every module. I don't see why it would increase that much in noise if you just use 2 modules, like in a DX1 or DX5.
Assume replacing all electrolytics would help. My DX5 isn't noisy at all and sounds superb!
I heard, that people who made modifications against the hiss, noticed, that the sound was changed.
Sometimes better specifications does not mean, that the sound is better.
You're right about the hiss. I still have my DX5 (and still in new condition - thanks Yamaha), but it was plagued with those noisy 12 bit converters, doubled. I adjusted a parametric EQ just so to shelve the noise considerably, then programmed my patched brighter to suit. It helped a lot.
I'm pretty sure Vangelis did Chariots on a different Yamaha-the legendary CS80. I'd love to hear you play around with one of those.
He already did
Yes, Vangelis used the CS-80 a lot, DX-7, DX-7 II FD, but no DX-1. 🙂
my dream is that he acquires a CS80, Jupiter 80 and Rhodes to recreate Human Nature by MJ.
I really like your musical spontaneity.
Chariots of Fire sounded gorgeous in that DX. Also, love the addition of the oscilloscope!
EDIT: Libertango?? YEAH BABEY
You are a lucky man! I wish I could noodle on this beast! I have a dx5 which is amazing but this thing is like a freakin unicorn! Thanks for another great video.
Respect
Beautiful to watch and listen how quickly and easily each sound inspires you! 👍
Claudio is a walking musical library.
The Beach Boys used it on their 1985 album. (It was played by Bruce Johnston, Brian and Carl Wilson.) Also David Paich and Steve Porcaro of Toto used it on 1986's Fahrenheit.
“Where I Belong” from the BB’85 album is a stunning song and an excellent example of the Beach Boys’ use of the DX1. I believe Brian and Carl both played it on that track, and there was also a PPG Wave and a Fairlight...and that was it for the instruments. Not a single non-electronic instrument. And it’s probably their best song from the decade.
DX1 only 140 examples were ever produced... Its an awesome piece of equipment..
This sounds amazing! I just got a Yamaha DX-7 from Japan, but I need to get it worked on, so I will not burn up the power supply as the voltage is set differently from Japan and America.
Discovered this channel recently, great content love the positive vibes
Omg this is exacly your instrument. You playing on it sounds really amazing.
The classic brothers in arms sounds!
The thing looks massive.
ABOVE THE LAW that’s what she said
And when it is when road cased it is a two person haul.
any new sound is the best sound Dr Mix have ever heard looking at his face
12:36 so glad to hear libertango from astor piazzola!
That beast powered the love songs ❤️ of the 1980's. Thanks for the memories.
I was lucky enough to visit Yamaha's Innovation Road in Hamamatsu a couple of months ago and spent a very happy hour messing around on one of these. Joyous.
Doctor Mix is having so much fun with these Keys, that he make more mistakes than is his Videos last 6 months :D
But its so nice to a see a person have so much fun with music.
Doctor Mix one of the best Musictubers here.
It must have been a treat to be able to play this in person! Behringer owns a DX-1 now and they teased us with how they think it's absurd that these are selling for 40,000$. Let's keep our fingers crossed!
Darkice Presents Saw one on eBay earlier today, accidentally (?) for 40,000 EUR but the guy said it used to cost about the same new, adjusted for inflation.
@@magicmulder This one is literally 2 miles from my home. You know how tempting it is to go and steal it :D
@@artisans8521 just got an Korg OPsix and I'm sure it's light years ahead of DX
I can't believe you finished with piazzolla! it's amazing how the music flows and you have fun playing ... congratulations and thanks for the good time!
I came here to hear the dx1 in action, and then I end up staying to hear you play lol... Dude! So fun to watch
Sounds so bright and clean. Very disco. Love that thing. Wish I could play it.
Great video !! This keyboard was pretty rare to see. I saw pet shop boys using one on a live preformance some time ago on a uk preformance.
1:05 I love this melody
You always make me so happy when you play Rocky!! Thank you!!! I also love the beginning music you play, it’s so gentle and beautiful!
The mighty DX1 sounds amazing!
This guys a crack up! Great demos with a fun attitude. Love it!
Happyness dealer ! Your joy on this synth is communicative
Man you're amazing
Holy crap! I wasn't expecting this... kudos to UVI.
I hated the factory patches at the time (and I'm still not the target demographic) but on my friend's DX5 I was able to create some monster layered patches that blew away the myth that FM can't do phat powerful sounds. One was not an organ sound but had the same balls as a cathedral organ with all the stops out.
Ending with Astor Piazzolla!!! Claps for you. Usted si que sabe maestro
2 synths I dream of owning one day...This and a Jupiter 8.
Well, I can dream!
You don't must to dream so much! You can buy a dx7. The sounds are practically the sames.
A good way to duplicate DX1 capabilities on the cheap is a DX7 and one or more TX7s. Adding more polyphony and/or layering was the original purpose of the TX7, and they’re super cheap today because the user interface is terrible unless you have a DX7 as a controller.
@@chriswalton720 These are super cheap because Yamaha produce so manies dx7s in the past. But the dx1 are so little. I read yamaha produce just only around 140 pieces in total! So you can imagine the motif of the high dx1 price. I think it is for sure a luxury double version of the dx7, with wood sides, a bigger keyboard and more functions but the motor synthesis is practically a 2xDX7. Nothing more! :) So if you are looking for that dx sound, try to look at the dx7. If you want the object, the phisical, the real thing dx1, this is another story! And I can understand you. But that's just a dreaming synth. Just for VIP and superstars, or for rich people. Anymore, i can say you i m happy with my real "poor"dx7! ;)
It's more like two DX5's..
I dream too bro...
Fantastic as always!
😎
Just yesterday I was rehearsing DX7 (Arturia) ... the soundtrack of the TV series "Greatest American Hero" [believe it or not] 😂
Man. You're bringing the heat. P10 followed by DX1. Great start to the year. Thank you!
first time i can ever recall that an advert has been better than a demo of a classic synth
The DX1- a luxury DX7 for people with deep wallets and massive houses (this thing is a battleship of a keyboard!).
I love my Montage with all the FM bells and whistles. It's even got a color graphic to help you change FM values in real time.
This is pure ecstasy!
Это просто чудо! Великолепный синтезатор. Прекрасное видео! ,,, it's polyphonic after touch.
Doctormix: *Get's a DX1 made famous by tears for fears*
Also Doctormix: *doesn't play tears for fears*
Orzabal said that they used Dx1 on their Seeds of Love album from 1989. And under a lot layers with Korg M1 and Roland D550 plus heavy Lexicon reverbs. Thats why there's not a recognisable sound.
@@sensi4360 They also "borrowed" an SY99 from Yamaha R+D in London and were slow in paying the rent on it ;-)
Maybe he's saving it for the other video? Also, at 2:19 I almost thought he was going to break into some version of Mad World, but alas didn't go there.
TFF didn't make the DX1 famous #BehringerEffect
@@PaulJBurns hahah i didn't know that
che bambinello!!! Era il mio sogno.... poi arrivó la SY77. E ce l'ho tutt'oggi!
What a Baby... It was my dream... then the SY77 arrived... and I still have it!
A little research yielded a price tag of just under 14K USD (in todays dollar between 40K and 45K) when it was released. 140 of them were made making them a bit rarer than hens teeth lol! A new Chevy was around 6K give or take depending on the model. So for those of you who own one, You are also rare.
Came for the beast. Stayed for the music. Happy 80's nostalgia!
That song at 3:51 played on radio one day. When it did, I was crying.
You’re such an amazing improviser.👍🎵🎹
yeah, sublime
When Claudio opens with the Electric Piano, you know its gonna be a good video :)
Also at some point I was waiting for the sounds of this synthesizer something of Chicago
7:44 I just get a portion of nostalgia when I heard the music from Sid Meier's Pirates (Sega Mega Drive). Thanks :)
Tvardovsky when did he play this?
@@BackyardRonin 7:44
How did I miss this upload. I'm a huge DX fan. Using my dad's DX7-IIFD daily and planning on getting a reface DX for fun on the go.
I am still crying after having sold my dx7 IIFD in 1992...😣😣

YOU ARE A SPECIAL MAN YOU ARE THE MONSTER OF SYNTH DOCTOR MIX
I just got a dx5 love it
What a beast. This man is already in the synth paradise ))
With that oscilloscope maybe make a video describing the basics of FM synthesis and how it differs from additive and subtractive and wave-table and other forms of sound synthesis because Yamaha synths really are unique due to the FM patent.
Man, Dr Mix, you are just so fun to watch. Thanks for all the awesome videos you put out there, I totally appreciate it.
With no doubts one of the best keyboards sound i"ve ever experienced !
Very rare synth now, the king of the DX, people slag the DX7 down, but if you learn to program it you could do amazing stuff with it, this is where the DX1 comes into its own, because it was much easier to program. It’s a shame they didn’t try to do this to the DX7 Mk2 models. Still one of the best synths made in my eyes, with the Jupiter 8 and emulators synths.
It’s certainly rare and cool, but can’t say the sound really adds anything you couldn’t do with dx7/tx802....monster of a keyboard though!
more more more, don't ever stop playing with presets. I could listen to it literally for hours.
Such a massive and powerful monster!! Btw nice chunes dude
MaxiR4k that's what she said...
No one:
Claudio: *click, click*
That very last string setting sounded a lot like "village ghetto land" was hoping you'd jump into it! Lovely synth, so fun to hear it!
I would love to take a tour of his house, I would stay for hours he has so many synths
Then he’d kick you out for getting Cheeto dust everywhere

You can never stay to long on Whitneys songs... 😍 This DX1 is breathtaking
The sound start at 12:36

Awesome.
It's like a real accordeon (and the attack sound like string) . Better than many big bank of samples !
👍
Bandoneón.. ''Libertango'' by Piazzolla
Aaaaah this is what made me happy now in hospital. Thanks Dr. Mix!
Awwww....that initial bit made me shiver....sooooo nice!
My dear, be sure in one particular and powerful thing... The energy that U feel playing, making all of "ohhh", "yeahs" and "ahhhhs" can be feel here too!
P. S. : Mammy was great too.... 😁
The DX1 is perfectly summarised by it's use on the Pet Shop Boy's appearance on The Old Grey Whistle Test.
You have the best job in the world, you clearly enjoy what you do. Very lucky, keep doing that!
Yeh we had a lot of good times throwing it on NYC HITS in early 80”s but....when the 2FD came out so did portability nice to see the younguns experience what started the whole revolution. I still remember being very strong on Yamaha DX models in a rolling stone interview try playing some rock with it
good vid for all to see. I still own an original and 2 FD
✌️👍👍👍
Wow, is there a classic hit that he does not know how to play! A veritable encyclopedia of synth jams, played with passion :)
I would die if you made a synthwave album
I could honestly just watch you jam out on rare vintage gear for hours…
(Those strings tho 😍)
that rocky soundtrack was a win even though the homerun already has been hit.
05:46 Reminds me of the Golden Axe game! 😂😂 Excelent video, Man!
FMRay These kind of comments truly make the internet a wonderful place.
@@mr.dervish4655 Actually, it’s not a cutdown version, but a completely different one, but the general concepts are the same, yes. The same completely identical synthesis algorithm and similar functions. All FM synthesis in the Yamaha implementation sounds similar (AdLib/Sound Blaster sound cards, early PSR keyboards, japanese home computers, DX100, Sega Genesis, TX81Z, DX7, DX1 and many others), the main difference in sounds is just the number of operators (but not only).
YM2612 is actually a variation on the YM2151/YM2164 (was in the DX100, DX21, FB01, arcade machines, some japanese home computers, etc.). YM2151 is a single-chip iteration (unlike the system in DX7, where was two chips - YM21280 (operator chip) and YM21290 (envelope chip)) and it has a completely different envelopes (according to the basis of the work), also there are many other differences, but they do not directly concern the architecture itself.
To understand the real difference between DX7 and the usual classic 4Op-synths - listen to DX9 and compare it with Sega Megadrive or DX100. DX9 has exactly the same filling as DX7, but it's only programmatically trimmed to 4 operators.
I enjoy how you go through your chord progressions. Nice style of play
