  • Canoeing around Puffin Island/Ynys Seiriol the SE corner of Ynys Mon (Anglesey) on the North Wales Coast. Grey seals, and sea birds, a small trip that has a lot. We hit it on the easiest condition imaginable, taking advantage of a neap tide with low wind forecast. I have seen it get wild here with wind over tide creating big sea conditions. PS We did spot a couple of Puffins on the water but in the distance.

    It's small things like mentioning you shouldn't disturb the seals or the birds that re-enforce Ray's expert status.

      Thank you Bert. Yep disturbance is a real problem with more and more folk on the sea, many of those new folk don't understand the problems we can cause. But new rules are coming in and there is lots of advice out there.

      Thank you for such a kind comment. It’s one of my favourites but does need the exactly right tide and weather. The seals are awesome

    Ray, you are fantastic and intuitive teacher. Hope to bring my family one day to get some instruction. Watching this makes me think the sea could good starting point for more adventurous training.

      Hi Sally, thank you for your kind comments. Very much appreciated. Re the sea: bear in mind that I really choose my days to be on the sea hence it is normally calm looking. I avoid the harder conditions which limits the days I can do stuff on the sea. Anyway kind regards, Ray

    That looks idyllic. I can't believe that I never knew about the Hoveringham - I've walked that stretch of coast and I used to live in Penmaenmawr with a view across Puffin Island.

    thank you for sharing this Ray - I will not ever likely have opportunity to paddle waters such as this (never say never however haha) and I appreciate that you choose to point out things like current lines and eddies and how to utilize them and the scenery and wildlife were amazing. many thanks from Alberta Canada

    With your self rescue, are you comfortable canoeing in bigger conditions on the ocean?

    • @RayGoodwinCanoe
      @RayGoodwinCanoe  Год назад

      Yes which is why I practise rescues in harder conditions. With customers I am very careful about the days I choose though. I don't want an epic when I am working. I have been around Puffin, in sea kayak, when it can be quite monstrous.

    On a calm day is it a difficult trip to make. Launching from Penmon point on either my rigid open top kayak or my inflateable sit inside kayak

      You need to be on a neap tide as well. The current can still run at up to 5-6 km per hour in the channel at the height of the tide. Get it right and its easy, get it wrong and it gets .......

      @@RayGoodwinCanoe Yeah I've been looking at a few difficulty zonal maps of anglesey for kayaking and that particular spot seems to differ from page to page. Maybe I'll stick to the coasts along the cliffs for now. I'd just love some seal experiences whilst paddling
