VAT:
• VAT is imposed on the final consumer, not the importers . While you are responsible for collecting and remitting VAT on sales of the imported goods, it's not an immediate cost for you. You claim credit for any VAT paid on your purchases when filing your VAT return.
• VAT is calculated on the customs value plus any customs duties and excise taxes. Including it in the initial cost sheet would lead to double counting.
Withholding Tax:
Withholding tax is typically deducted at the source of income, in this case, by the foreign supplier you are purchasing from. It's not a direct cost that you incur from the import process itself.
The applicability of withholding tax depends on the type of goods and the supplier's residency. If the supplier is not resident in Ethiopia, withholding tax might not apply.
Therefore, including VAT and withholding tax in the initial cost sheet can cause confusion and distort the actual landed cost of the imported goods.
