Cecilia Bartoli, Sposa son disprezzata

- Sposa son disprezzata ("I am wife and I am scorned") is an Italian aria written by Francesco Gasparini. It is used in Vivaldi's pasticcio, Bajazet.
The music for this aria was not composed by Vivaldi. The originating work is Francesco Gasparini's opera Bajazet, composed before Vivaldi's pasticcio. It was a common practice during Vivaldi's time to compile arias from other composers with one own's work for an opera. Vivaldi himself composed the arias for the good characters and mostly used existing arias from other composers for the villains in this opera. "Sposa son disprezzata" is sung by a villain character, Irene. Vivaldi has recently been attributed as the composer of the work, perhaps because Cecilia Bartoli's album "If You Love Me (Se tu m'ami ), 18th-Century Italian Songs") which uses Alessandro Parisotti's 19-century piano version, attributes the work solely to Vivaldi.
This aria is about a woman whose husband repeatedly cheats on her, but she still loves him so. They play this piece in the Sopranos, I think David Chase had in mind Tony's affairs on Carmela, especially the one he was currently having with Gloria. If you notice in the episode, the music centers on Carmela in the museum, crying as she looks at the religious-themed artwork. One painting was of a woman kissing the hand of baby Jesus, she in a sense betrothing herself to the Lord -- a husband who would never betray or cheat on her faithfulness as Tony had done to her. The music in any case is exquisite; those two sequences towards the end get me in tears every time. And I've listened to this piece dozens and dozens of times.
They also play it when Melfi connects Tony's attraction to Glori from her likeness of his mother. But why do they play it after they decide to leave the Russian thing alone?
Because the Pine Barrens episode ends with the reference to Gloria, who is the scorned woman, and then Melfi connecting her personality to Livia.
Thanks for telling this...🙏
Which episode of Sopranos, was this piece sung? I love this aria, & would enjoy hearing it in a different setting.
@@HanaDeHaya It's at the end of "Pine Barrens" (Season 3, Episode 11) and the beginning of "Amour Fou" (Season 3, Episode 12).
She's not singing it, she's being it - truly exquisite and perfect.
Yes. My thoughts exactly. Watching her sing it is half the beauty.
It's absolutely true.
This is on another level. Binge watching the sopranos brought me to this celestial rendition.
Same here
Same again!
yep
Same
Same
I think this is the best interpretation of this aria, without doubt. No singer has made me cry like Bartoli. And I don't usually cry with music. There is something sublime here. This woman is celestial.
@@fabriziogarzi9892Yes, I have and I don't like them as much.
Cecilia Bartolli is the world renowned master of this particular kind of singing.
Precioso❤
Montserrat Caballé mucho mejor, única
Not. Enough. People. Appreciate. This. Beautiful. Woman.
YES,ABSOLUTELY BREATHTAKING 🎼😢♥️🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤♥️♥️♥️♥️
Enough do. Enough will.
We should all hope for a little remembrance.
So true and so sad! 😔
Shut up lol we all watched sopranos
Sopranos fans will allways do..
Brought here by the Sopranos. What a sad but beautiful aria. Vivaldi is superior in every way.
Honestly, may be the most beautiful song I have heard in my life.
the most perfect performance I have ever witnessed by her... Brava Cecilia
I agree. It’s breathtaking. The angels in heaven are weeping.
It’s a veritable masterclass in legato singing…phenomenal breath control…absolutely agree that it’s one of her greatest moments…and I’d go beyond that and say that it’s one of the greatest performances of all time. Sheer perfection. I come back to this video very often. A very great artist.
"Pine Barrens" episode of Sopranos introduced me to this song. I knew it was beautiful and unique the first time I heard it and tried to look it up. My wife ended up performing this song while getting her music performance degree at a college level conservatory. The best part was even none of the music professors were aware of this song. She blew them away.
This is the pinnacle of musical perfection that any human being (alive or dead) is capable of displaying. Waves upon waves of goosebumps
idk man have you heard i dont like by chief keef
Yes, sir!
From 03'20" to the end she sings in such an incredible way that I can hardly believe it...
A masterpiece, that´s my point of view.
This rendition took my breath away.Cecilia gathers diamonds from the very bottom of her soul. Her voice pierces the heart. So very beautiful with a flawless technique to match.
She was made for this aria, with just a piano she controls the mood. It's amazing. She's the best!
Listening to this is like a spiritual journey....
Cecilia is the only one in my opinion who has the perfect coloratura for Baroque arias. No one else has her level of depth and richness of voice for this type of music.
I 100% agree. No one else touches her talent in this realm.
This is nonsense. Celia sings it as perfect as can be. Others do so as well, only differently.
@@stavrosk.2868 This.
Exactly.@@stavrosk.2868
She’s the goat
She recorded this in her mid-20's more than thirty years ago. She was a very mature singer at a young age. P.S.: That's a gorgeous bronze-colored gown and beautiful hair. All of this adds to the performance.
Nobody sings like her, really unique, fantastic artist
So much beauty...I'm speechless. Thanks to all comments that add to my culture 🙂
Angelic voice and beautiful face.
Tony soprano RIP
he nailed it .
What a heavenly voice . I have goosebumps and trembling inside .
This performance goes to show you how important intension & interpretation is. Unparalleled. When she is good she is magnificent.
I heard this song on the sopramos's show. I'm mostly a heavy metal guy, but I've wathched this like 10 times. Probably gonna watch it 1000 more.
Cecilia is so beautiful. It’s like she is reincarnated from the Italian Renaissance. Her eyes, her hair, her heart, her soul. I was lucky enough to visit Firenze, and a sculpture of her would have fit in perfectly next to Michelangelo’s David. A true old soul.
How beautiful this aria is and how fascinating she is signing... This is the first time I have ever heard it tonight and yet I feel like I have known every note of it all my life... :( So thankful for her to carry such a beautiful piece to here to all of us, to me today, to this moment and to eternity.
Your name is “DEMET” !!!!! :D
For me, it's just the aria that I anchored in the performance of Leyla ♥️ Gencer🌿
She looks like a Renaissance bella. Splendid!
No one sings this aria quite like Cecilia, who makes one feel the music -- such control, subtlety, exquisite beauty!
I agree!
It never fails to move me to tears.
Absolutely exquisite. Pine Barrens from the Sopranos.
Beautiful. 😍
It's sad when people only know classical music from movies/TV or Bugs Bunny cartoons (think barber).
@@RichardFallstich I love the opera. Sometimes two forms of art combined can introduce someone to something they weren't even aware of. It doesn't matter where it comes from as long as it touches something inside of you.

Every time I listen this version I have been moved to cry
It is just unbelievable. How can something be so beautiful?
That was masterful and exquisite. What a strong and melodious voice. No one can hold a note as long as Bartoli. What a set of lungs!
She is the Pavarotti of coloratura's...Brava! ❤❤❤
One of my favorite episodes of the Sopranos so far (just finished s3). This track along with the car driving away was such a great moment, chills down my spine
Henry Andersson I would give everything to be you right now. Finishing season 3 and having 4 more to go and discover it all over again
Too bad it didn't end right there and then. It should have in my opinion. Would have been so powerful and beautiful.
Instead they cut to Tony and Melfi having a session.
I can imagine the funniest Paulie's face ever when a listen this music
She is not singing she is living the song
exactly
Maravilla.
she made me in tears
AAD peppa
¡¡¡ BRAVAAAAAAAAAA !!!
Sublime ❤
This makes me cry almost every time I listen to it deeply
The most beautiful thing I’ve heard in my life, move me to tears every time I hear/see it, the song itself is a delight but this interpretation is sacred. Ultimate beauty brings strong emotions, thank you Cecilia ❤
I love how the word "hope" (speranza) is so drawn out and containing so much emotion and variation in inflection. It's as if to say that she is so exasperated by remaining so consistently hopeful for so long yet consistently being let down.
Tony : Got mayonnaise on ya chin
Paulie : What
Tony : MAYONNAISE! MAYONNAISE!
Best episode ever after the Russian
Is there another good Russian epiode i have forgotten?@@CarasTours
“Mayonnaizzshe”
Besides her magnificent voice, what makes Ms. Bartoli's rendition of this aria so outstanding is the intensity of emotion she manages to convey. I won't call any names, but some other divas sound tepid after hearing this performance.
Davehshs, please see M. Caballé renditon of this aria. It's marvelous ! Absolutely marvelous !
+J AL Thank you. Yes, I'm extremely fond of M. Caballe's singing of this and many other arias. And she does sing with deep feeling as well as having a marvelous voice.
However, I have to say that I slightly prefer Bartoli's version of this particular aria, at least the youtube version. I'm not saying it's in any way better than Caballe's; it's just a personal preference.
Thanks, davehshs, Bartoli's rendition of this aria is absolutely "warm" and beautiful ! Best, JAL
I completely agree, I think this interpretation is the most profound of all I've heard. Other singers' versions might not be nearly as touching due to the fact that the character in the opera (Irene) is traditionally considered to be a villain but i prefer when artists find depth in "bad" characters as well as they would in "good" ones, so yes, to me this interpretation is superior to others.
YES!!!!!!!!💟💟💟💟💟💟
The voice control is insane!
R.İ.P James Galdolfini.. we miss you T.
She is a Goddess.. Stunning and breathtaking
Truly one of the most beautiful arias I've ever heard. It's devastating. ♥
Her beautiful voice gives wings to the soul and flight to the imagination
Wow! Wonderful comment!
Such poetic words Mikey, I feel the same way. Her expression of sadness and desperation is out of this world, as if she was truly this scorned wife herself. I keep coming back to this beauty almost daily, it touches my soul deeply and these words could be my own
Her beautiful voice is out of this world
She’s beautiful & her voice is life 🖤
This is Perfection!
This interpretation transports me beyond time every time I listen to it.
My whole being shivers and vibrates in response to this divine voice, which oscillates between melancholy, reproaches and regrets that crush a life like an insignificant twig.
Thank you Cécilia
This gives me so many incredible feelings that I can't explain.

It really is!
Insane breath control, I got goosebumps :O :O Love both her and Caballe's rendition
This breaks my heart everytime. It haunts me. It moves my soul. So this is so pure
i heard this on the Sopranos- It is like listening to a vocal waterfall.
Mezzosoprano
Melodic and vocalistic harmony. Pure perfection of classical vocal music. By the way, i came here because of The Sopranos series.
You're not the only one.
Came here to say this song made me feel better about life. Even for just a little while. Listened to it with my eyes closed
Cecilia Bravissima, sensibilmente intensa, emozionante.✨👍
By far the best version.
Sublime aria! Splendide Cecilia Bartoli! Merci beaucoup, Madame!
Sopranos here too!
Just, superb, amazing, no words
Interpretazione magistrale
From the very first words, we understand the immense poetic, dramatic and emotional maturity of Cecilia. It is unbelievablz ; Dès les toutes premières paroles, on comprend l'immense maturité poétique, dramatique, émotionelle de Cecilia. C'est inoui

Great music of Vivaldi.
I sang this in a concert as a tenor as I converted it, as my wife left me!
Metaphysician
Classical musician
In some instances, I thought Cecilia would be my wife 😅
Up until now, I thought I had previously had the opportunity of listening to the best version of this wonderful Aria by Vivaldi but this sublime treatment by Bartoli has a tingling resonation which makes it the very best interpretation of the Aria.
Sopranos brought me here. There was this 2 second snippet of this song in the background in the end of one episode. Once I heard it, even that fraction of this song, I knew I had to find it. Absolutely beutiful.
When I thought i was out they pulled me back in!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏yes,hilarious
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL CLASSIC❤💔😢👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
😂😂👌
Whether you understand what she is saying or not… you know what she is communicating… the words are quite simple and few… yet in translation or not, transformed into something so transcendent.
I have never been a fan of Ms Bartoli, but one would have to be deaf not to recognize the incredible beauty of her singing there! None of the singers I've heard have come close to her "Sposa son disprezzata", not even the wonderful Vivica Genaux and the the magnificent Joyce di Donato.
rayangreene I agree completely. She is quite touching here and refrains from her usual affectations and grimaces

This is a stunningly beautiful song…
Bravo! 👏🎧💜🎶
Brava!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Her voice is so pure. Almost haunting through her range. You can feel her words . Powerful.
this is the most real piece of art alive...
Gorgeous, brings tears to my eyes.
I don't understand a word but it touched me, why!
Because you felt the essence, the spirit of the song, splendidly offered by Cecilia Bartoli’s interpretation. (See also Montserrat Caballé). It is about hope, hope and nothing else: SPERANZA.
it's the magic of music, universal language!
Büyüleyici👏👏👏👏
Será que sou o único brasileiro que ama a voz desse ANJO ?
Acho que nós dois temos bom gosto
Difícil brasileiro conhecer e curtir cantores dessa qualidade
So much richness in every note! Exquisite tone! Phenomenal breath control and vocal agility! Coloratura & virtuoso are terms that this remarkable artist truly embodies! Her range is vast and her technique is far & above marvelous!! ❤❤❤
SUBLIME!!! Perfect in every sense.
Perfection, power and passion. This rendition will never be equaled....
