Peter, your customers now expect a companion video inspection clip besides a list of recommended fixes ... You have raised the expectations. Excellent work!
@Toyota Maintenance. Thank you Professor Peter for showing us the difference between really bad and better transaxial/transmission fluid. You have great eyes for details. I only used a quick lube place once when I ran out of time to do my own oil change. Big mistake. They convinced me to change the transmission fluid showing me the fluid color was too dark. The transmission slipped after the service. The techs overtightened the pan bolts and damaged the cork gasket so I was losing transmission fluid. I took my car back and they replaced the gasket. I never went back. Hate when something that doesn't leak leaks after someone works on it. Hope you and your family stay safe and well.
I just found this channel and I am also glad I did . Thank you for such a well detailed video ..this was actually fun to watch for me as well as a diy 'er !!
Peter, Go to the dollar store and buy a few clear plastic cups. They don't even have to be the hard plastic ones... Getting the ones like the water cups at In-N-Out Burger will do just fine. You could even buy food service sauce cups at Smart and Final. They have lids. It would look so much more impressive to a new customer than a used food container. An added bonus would be that you could put a light behind them and set them on white paper for a better comparison shot in your videos. You could also offer fluid analysis through that lab in the midwest. They charge $30 to common folks, maybe you pad it by $5 with the goal of capturing more fluid change work. Of course, you have the lab send you the results, not the customer.
I feel like he should have checked to make sure the rear actually had enough oil in it. The only way I know how to do that is to see it slightly run out. With a 2004 4Runner that has the drip at the actuator seal I have to check fluid level frequently. I would love to see a video of pulling the transfer case and replacing those seals.
I feel like Peter Finn is a good guy too. Makes too many life mistakes and very sensitive. I told him don't worry about the people complaining about his accent. We watch for his skill. Not his speech. Does he still post videos to this day
@@wim0104 Are you from the US? I remember one of my first cultural events I was told by someone visiting why does everything have sugar?? Pieter, I’m a believer if you take care of your vehicle, it will take care of you! Follow the OEM service guidance and use proper parts. Competent service is key!! Continued success and eat more sauerkraut!!
Of course with exception to lifetime recommendations in order to satisfy car magazine and industry bragging numbers. Our Highlander isn't a hybrid, but otherwise same year and model (meaning: probably lot of differences). Very informative video. Hope the owner authorizes a service. Be interesting to see how it is done.
I love sauerkraut! My family does not. My wife has a 2010 Highlander V-6. It will become my sons car in 2 years. If it lasts that long( squirrels have been our nemesis since the pandemic began). Have a good weekend friends.
sprinkle chili pepper around your engine bay, if that does not work try apple cider vinegar and water 50/50 but don't spray on connectors and try to avoid wires
Thank you for the video I have a 2009 Highlander Sport with 145K miles, I love my car. I am going to replace the front evaporator core as it has a leak. It is a massive job and wasn’t able to locate any documentation on the best way to handle the tear down. I have watched a few YT video on it and know it is a lot of work. I want to replace my differential oil as well along with the transfer case oil as it has never been replaced. Also want to replace 4 quarts of the automatic transmission fluid myself. I would like to know where you can find all the torque specs for the 2009 Highlander? And what brand and model is your Torque wrench? Is a SnapOn? Wonderful to watch your videos, so much to learn. Thank you for sharing
Peter,I have a leaky seal on drivers rear axle on my 2006 Highlander Limited hybrid.AWD.If I, open battery disconnect under left passenger seat is it safe to work on the Q211 rear differential ?It would seem, I have to split the housing to replace the seal.I can't find a good site to explain this repair.Could you help please?
I been watching your videos very detail and honest man, I’ll appreciate if you can tell me the torque specs of the drain and fill plug for a 2008 Toyota Camry hybrid thank you
Hello, on this Highlander Hybrid and Lexus RX400H transmission there's a fill plug in the middle of this transmission looking from the driver side wheel well. What is that for? Please explain, thank you in advance!
Good day sir please what the number of oil seal for toyota corolla 2004 I changed mine but I think the mechanic fixed wrong number that is lower than the old one
Can someone let me know why to open the fill/overflow plug first... before opening the drain? I did not get what Peter said when he tried to explain. One of the other people mentioned possible low usage of the rear motor for AWD. That is a very good point. In testing the hybrid AWD, the rear does mot get anywhere near usage as the front - unless you live in deep snow and mud most of the year.
you want to be able to make sure u can fill it again before u drain it. fill plug can sometimes get stuck / not open easily, which is something u don't want to find out after u have drained the fluid. opening the fill plug can also help the fluid drain better (less vacuum).
He exaggerates this because a while ago when he was getting a lot bigger a lot of people trolled him about that and that people at home would be stuck and ever since, he reminds people. But I told him, this does not apply to him because he is at a shop and has many professional tools at his disposal as well as a delivery supplier which many people do not have and that he can be exempt, but clear some people hurt him and now he must say it every time until he can heal from it. :(
4:17 what is that five bolt cover that has a drain plug just immediately forward of the front transfer case? I can't tell from the closeup, is that for the trans? Why such a small panel? i can't tell if that's trans? Can't be motor, it's to the right in camera under the engine, black pan! A hex for that, makes it so confusing if it is, no trans pan!
I think this will be acceptable to make only a short video of the front transfer case change in case you don't have time this time because we really just want to see the fluid color. Almost looks like they put in the wrong one or even motor oil and not WS!!
Great job Peter! Since you are going to be responsible for this Toyota Highlander hybrid, will you also service the hybrid battery if it needs it? I have an 06 Highlander hybrid Limited that I am just about ready to swap the V6 engine out with one that has a few miles. The previous owner apparently round the coolant dry so here we are.
I'm taking my Tacoma to the dealer for a four wheel drive service. Front diff, rear diff, transfer case fluid change. How can I make sure they do all the work they say they're going to do?
You have to get underneath and remove the fill plug for the rear/front diff and transfer case and check the color of the fluid. By having to do all that just to make sure someone did the job you paid for it would be best just to change it yourself. That way you know for sure it's done right. Plus you'll save a lot too. Or have Peter do it and know it will be done right.
One of those cheap Chinese torque wrenches will suffice for us amateurs. Just remember to quit pushing as soon as it clicks, or beeps. Got to love the comments from the medical experts. Rear unit is probably rarely used, though I dunno if 4wd/awd is selectable on that rig. Did the front look that bad ? I wonder how it should look if it had 20k miles on it or so....
This is a full-time AWD that basically uses its own program to figure out where to send power. The rear motor though actually sends Regen back to the battery
