wow!!! that butterfly in your walkway bed is amazing. you have the upper canopy so dense... wild. 13 year old video too.. crazy you look at laceleafs the same as me. need to get a little height on the trunk and keep it pruned. can't be an unsightly "bush"
I have a weeping maple that is starting to go down towards the ground: can I take a gas hesge trimmer and just take the branches off in a straight line?? Or will this cause dead branches and 4 more branch breaks? Thanks!
THIS IS GREAT INFO! I was worried that my S. Kaku was dying of "black stem" bc there's so many tips dying & there's some dark blemishes on the stem (but nothing like what I see in related pictures). So if tip-dieback comminly happens when you don't cut in the right places, I'm guessing that tree's tip-dieback might be from deer-browse. Deer probably arent mindful of where the nodes are. SO, unless i find more evidence of disease, you saved my S.K. from being ripped out and disposed of in error. THANX!!
All of these nobodies talking smack that hes not making proper cuts etc. etc. I DO NOT see any of you making videos. I guess the saying stands by itself " haters are going to hate!!"
I do not like to tell people as to how they should prune their plants because it is their garden but at the same time I find this video to provide very misleading information as to how to grow and prune japanese maple trees. If you look at the great photos of japanese maples you will see the leaves glow as light passes through the tree yet by pruning in this method you will never see the amazing colors.
you realize hes pruning during their dormancy state??. of course you will not see any leaves during this season. do you have any videos countering what Mike is stating?? I would be interested!!
As a person who earns a living working with and pruning plants, I feel a lot of incorrect information is being presented here. You --cannot-- control a plants' size with pruning, (even the Acer Palmatum) the results are always temporary. Perhaps a better solution for the plants health is to place a plant where its mature size will fit the landscape? It takes a long time to learn how to prune these tress to promote their health and improve their aesthetic quality. So part of the reason why I do not agree with how you are treating these trees is because you do not have enough time to explain each of your cuts. You try to, but the camera does not clearly show why you make each cut.. Instead of mounting the camera too far away to see what you are doing, add a second camera either next to your shoulder or wear one. Later you can edit the footage together and maintain the audio commentary. Green Man is correct, people who prune their trees with this kind of incorrect information only do one thing: Guarantee that I will never run out of work. Always prune with the next year, and the next five years in mind. Remember, we invite these plants into our lives and yards to improve them, not mistreat them.

What are you even talking about? He's not making proper cuts for a Japanese maple simple as that.
