this was one of the most informative straight forward videos on setting up a home NAS i have seen. Thank you for the structure and pace of the video, which made for learning and following along simple and easy for anyone learning
Glad you found it informative and easy to follow. I try to make all of my videos that way but it doesn't always turn out like this video! Lol! Thank you for watching and for the kind comments! Have a great day!
Thanks for the great video! We wanted to share some updates with you. Initially, we provided a lifetime Unraid license with our products, but due to changes in Unraid’s pricing, we’ve had to adjust the licensing. We also have two exciting announcements: The LincStation N1 REFRESH will come with a 10-gigabit Ethernet port and an N100 CPU. Our self-developed system, LincOS, which supports Wi-Fi 6 and up to 128GB of RAM, is currently in testing and expected to launch next year. We hope you’re as excited about these updates as we are!
That's stupid. You released this model number with a free license, then changed what is included afterwards. So there are a bunch of resources online saying lifetime license and the only reason I found this comment is because I thought it was strange this youtuber said 1 year when everything else was saying lifetime.. all because I was looking for a video that tests transcoding -- for some reason nobody talks about that. But overall the bottom line point is that you should use a revision number or another model number if you want to change what is offered.
I'm new to Unraid, but I've read (in the Unraid docs) that it is not good to use SSDs as parity drives... To quote the Quick Install Guide: "SSD support in the array is experimental. Some SSDs may not be ideal for use in the array due to how TRIM / Discard may be implemented. Using SSDs as data/parity devices may have unexpected/undesirable results". Unraid 7 (release candidate 1 now available) supports having SSDs in a Pool, without using the Unraid Array... So the licenses is for the legacy basic 1 year. U get updates for 1 year, then after that no new updates. U still can use the nas. Its about $100 for pro upgrade. Pro is unlimited drives and lifetime updates.
The unraid license is for 1 year with updates. After the year no more updates but you still have an unraid license. If want more updates after 1 year you pay more.
I got to the plex set up bit and i don't have the same options as you when it comes to pressing actions. Is it because I don't have a paid account on it? Do I have to use the Jellyfin?
I activated my key that came with it but it still says purchase on the top right and when I click that it says I can't purchase it because I already have it. It makes no sense.
Nevermind i sorted it. It's because I started the trial and then added the activation code for the 1 year and so it put two keys on the memeory stick inside the N1 and so i had to delete the trial from inside it. I was hope it would give me 1 year and 1 month by doing the trail as well but it just gave me a head ache.
@@UltimateTechHub This is my first one so it was a headache but I am glad its up and running now. I had so many issues like it wouldn't update or download plugins and i had to change the date and time and reboot it a few times before it would let me. So hopefully is some has the same issue and reads this they know not to give up.
So the licence is only for 1 year? What happens if it expires? I'm trying to get away from subscription models so this is key to whether I buy this or something else.
You have to pay $39 a year after that. I mentioned that at the end of the video. The 2.5G ethernet and the subscription model is the only 2 things I don't like about this NAS. Otherwise, it's a fantastic Mini NAS. It's super easy to setup. Thanks for watching!
If it had the 10gig ethernet port and the lifetime unraid license it would be worth it! Best feature is that it's minimal and makes no noise. Thanks for watching!
To me it's worth 400 USD as a digital nomad. Just ordered. No need for anything too fancy - low weight is most important. And I happen to have 3 x 8 TB 2.5" SSDs. Planning on using 4 x m.2 1 TB for "important files" (up to 3 TB with RAIDZ1) and then I will use 2 x 8 TB for Plex or something like that. M.2s don't weigh much at all. And I'll just upgrade the m.2s later if I actually need it.
If your looking for a small and portable NAS, then check out the LincStation N1 All SSD Mini NAS. Let me know what you think?

Lol! I've had many headaches setting NAS systems. After doing 8 or 9 you get used it! Thanks for watching and enjoy the NAS.

@@UltimateTechHub $39/yr to keep accessing your own data? Or $39/yr for OS updates?
can we install windows 11 on it??
not worth $400
