the driving plate as we called it was also the brake disc,it had springs and rolllers in it, when the machine was washing ,they did nothing, but when the motor went into reverse, the rollers ran up a slope in the brake disk, and jammed into the disc causing to to grip just like the clutch in your car ,hence you had spin

The "Automated Hoover Keymatic" what a complex machine, it certainly had us all transfixed, I was surprised how very quiet it was on spinning and "No Balancing Issues Here" straight into the spin, no faffing at all, but with a motor like it has it takes no messing!!!

the pulsator was used for normal wash, but in gentle wash was cut off buy the clutch solenoid ,it stopped it from turning

The most efficient wash action is by suction. This was proved donkeys ago with the "Posser" A copper cup with holes in it used in a Dolly Tub. Slapping wet laundry against rocks had a similar effect. I dont think Hoover fully appreciated this with their first Keymatic as they made it with the then famous "pulsator" from their twin tubs. More wear on laundry and totally unncessary, added to which the main drum bearings were totally submerged and constantly failing. I used to work on these machines in the early 70s. The modern idea of a fully perforated drum revolving horizontally cannot be beaten in terms of efficiency and water economy. It again works on suction provided its not overloaded

i have a 3224 works perfect, chrome bezel with red tape with white lines to indicate the wash cycle ,parts are hard to find, but i have a few ,but i would never do what that guy did and bypass the safety switches

Oh yes, I remember that the progress indicator was like a piece of red film on a loop between two sprockets, with two white lines painted on it. These moved along the scale to show what stage the wash was at.

Why is the pulsator not turning?

unlike the machines of today, the water valves could be stripped and cleaned out,the pump could cut your finger off,in 20 years i never had to replace a pump, new machines are cheap ,the pump blocks very easy, cheap rubbish

you dont have a clue mate, the 3224 and the 3226 are the same machine, only the bezel was changed ,i worked for hoover for twenty years, complexed it was not,(to us engineers in hoover) it was far ahead of its time with the keyplate system ,the clutch and drive system ,and the reversing motor ,was a joy to work on,it only had one fault, the beariings where below the water level,
