When I worked in radio as a broadcast engineer we used carpet that is fire rated for vertical installation on the walls of the studio.

You brought up an interesting point with the shield actually harming the sound. I've never thought of it but it kinda make sense - it may have a similar effect to cupping the mic with your hand (not nearly to the same extent of course, but maybe just a bit).
I think the only use case where using such shield is really beneficial is when using figure-8 mics. John Petrucci from Dream Theater mics up his cabs with sE Electronics VR2 ribbon mic on live shows and he uses a similar shield to block the sound coming from the stage.

I just found your channel. You are 100% correct. A closet is easy to turn into a cheap vocal booth. I have used it to mic up guitar cabs as well. I agree with the guy who stated the shield may help with figure eight microphones. I just have a Stam SA-87T which is a U-87 clone but in tube form and SA-47 Mklll which is their U-47 clone, A Wa 251, and a few various condenser mics. Then the usual SM-57 and Sm-7. I have the old version. I have tried recording in the bathroom for a natural reverb effect. I like your channel.

I’m glad you mentioned the sound from behind you, that’s forgotten a lot.

Yeah, that's why I think these shields have limited effectiveness.

Analog V. Digital. Analog gave us a spectrum of frequencies. It give us the soft almost life like recordings. But it also gave us the flaws of the technology. Digital gave us clarity but at the frequencies ranges that excluded the flaws. But it were flawed frequencies that also included what we liked about analog. Sometimes you must endure the noise of the wind to hear the rustling of the leaves.
