I don't normally comment - long time listener, fellow admirer of Max's and hater of DRS. Disagree with blaming DRS for Max's clumsy chuck up the inside of Lewis. This was poor judgement and a failure to control his emotions, pure and simple. F1 drivers should be able to control the overspeed which DRS gives, like it or not.

I'm shocked by Peter's take on Piastri's win, saying Piastri should have not wanted the win and this was Lando's race, he had earnt it.
The only reason Piastri nearly lost is because the team undercut him even though he was the leading car, everyone knows the lead driver gets first stops. Piastri won the start failry no matter what Peter says, he controlled the race and Lando could not catch and overtake him even though they are free to race as per the radio message to Lando.
McLaren took the lead from him so they made sure he got it back, perfectly understandable and anything else would have been outrageous.
Peter really baffled me on this one, I'm a fan but I need to stop listening for a while as to not start hating.

Double so for an Australian like myself. I generally respect Peter’s opinion, but I also believe Oscar had every right to win that race when McLaren were clearly trying to protect Lando’s P2 position. Lando Norris is not in a position to do a Michael Schumacher or Sebastian Vettel routine, who had multiple wins when they disobeyed team orders, Lando has only one win to date. The other thing to consider is Zak Brown is a contracts man and has no issue firing a driver. Unlike Christian Horner, Zak Brown is involved in a range of motorsport teams, so can take a neutral position when dealing with a driver. As Martin Brundle pointed out on the Sky F1 website, “One of the core clauses in any F1 contract is that you will follow team instructions at all times.”
Lando Norris has several key weaknesses at the moment, 1) his starts, 2) not battle harden like, 3) poor decision making under pressure, and 4) the inability to overtake Max regularly. Since Miami GP, the head-to-head between Max and Lando is 5 to 2, with Max coming away with 3 wins. Max will remain a factor for the rest of the 2024 season.

Now you claim these are comparable incidents, but apparently Piastri is totally to blame when he pulls the same move? Which actually, wasn’t the same move because he WAS sufficiently alongside and there was no collision.

  • @okothobbo

I am frankly baffled by the, what else can I can call it, rankness PW has been unwinding on behalf Lando. Lando himself did not complain about the first turn incident of which Peter makes so much but in which Lando himself chopped sharply into Piastri's racing line and, some would even say, nearly drove him into the wall. Rather, he admitted that he only got a bad start (yet again!). There was neither even only a "note" by the stewards of anything untoward by Piastri, let alone an investigation. Yet, Peter relentlessly excoriates Piastri for allegedly having steered into and forced Lando wide where, however, Max was romping past him and was himself forced wide. He contends that Piastri cost Lando a race lead which, it seems he is saying, Lando was somehow entitled to either for having been on pole or because he is the closest to Max in the fight for the championship. He asks: if Max was forced to hand back second position back to Lando, why wasn't Piastri asked to do the same thing? To me, utter rubbish! This is a man who has been on pole position five times yet has not once led the race at the end of the first or second turn. In his first pole this year, at the Spanish Grand Prix, and in the fastest car of the entire race weekend, Lando made yet another hapless start to the race and, going into Turn 1 was sandwiched on the inside by Max and on the outside by George Russell in almost identical fashion to what happened to him at the Hungarian race, ending up languishing in third position as Russell led the race with Max in second. Only in passing did we hear Peter allude in his post race "analysis" to the possibility of a penalty against Max which the stewards had however dismissed. Mainly, he was rather criticizing Lando "who should have been able to outbreak Max into turn 1", and even more exuberantly applauding Russell for having "gazumped both of them on the outside...hands down absolutely a superb piece of opportune driving by George Russell". So, what is different this time around? Piastri absolutely and utterly fairly launched past Lando on the off notwithstanding Lando cutting into his line and potentially running him into the wall. Notwithstanding a mistake on lap 33 that cost him time, Piastri then went on to build a commanding lead over both Lando and everybody else which he would undoubtedly have retained unchallenged to the end of the race hadn't the team pitted Lando first on lap 45 to protect Lando's second position then under threat from a hard-charging Lewis who would have jumped him if Lando had, as per normal protocol, been pitted after Piastri. By the time Piastri was pitted two laps later, Lando had ofcourse built an advantage on fresher rubber and jumped him. Now, if the team had in pitting Lando first, said to Piastri: tough luck, you made a mistake and now that we have to pit Lando first to protect both his second position and a 1-2 finish for the team, he will jump you, sorry! that would no doubt have elated Peter no end. But it would have been even more diabolically unjust to Piastri. In any case, that is not what the team decided. Its decision, which no doubt was communicated to both drivers, was that the true and fairest outcome of the race would be upheld to the end and that Lando would have to hand back the lead to Piastri. I have no recollection if such switch decisions, which have been and remain part of the daily fare of Formula 1, have previously triggered in Peter this amount of vitriol we are hearing from him this time around. But it is the decision that both employees of the team would have to obey. Piastri should have refused a win "given" to him??? Piastri does not feel, or should not feel like this was a win?? Yeah right!! Piastri would most definitely have had every right to be as mad as a hornet if a deserved win was undercut from him executively and handed to someone he had owned from the very first turn of the race and for 46 straight laps after that and was otherwise destined to finish at best only in third position!!

Hi, Peter. Another great analysis of the race in Hungary. My question is, if DRS was banned tomorrow, would it bring back the excitement where drivers have to be genuinely better than the pole sitter to overtake, or is there a case for a driver to qualify 2nd or 3rd on the grid at the moment to take advantage of the massive advantage that DRS gives them? Surely, it's time to ban it, and get back to the days when the fastest driver wins without artificial advantages.

Do you think that Verstappen had rights to space on Lando, but he did not have rights to space on Piastri? Thus, Piastri was only obligated to leave enough space for Lando, and not Max, as Verstappen wasn’t far enough alongside Piastri? Lando would be obliged to leave enough space for Verstappen, but he was unable to as Piastri only had to leave space for one car. Thus, no one was at fault and it was a racing incident as Max had already committed and couldn’t really back out through the turn, but he was then obligated to give the space back. I really don’t know if that’s how the rules work. The rules for who gets rights to a corner and how to pass has always been a little mystifying to me. I was always confused as to how you could pass through a turn in a race of equal machinery if the car in front was always on the best line. There is no decline in car performance, their performance is exactly the same as in the beginning of the year, that is the problem. Probably you've missed the part where McLaren and Mercedes have brought really good upgrades and they outdeveloped Red Bull since Miami. The rest is just gossip, this " illegal components" rumours have been leaked from 2 teams apparently ( I wonder who those teams are 😁) right after Red Bull asked the FIA to investigate McLaren's cooling system and Mercedes flexy wing. Im not saying this rumor is true, its a rumor after all. but in hungary the mclaren was 0.8s quicker per lap on a race trim compared to the 2023 season while the red bull was 0.2s slower. 0.2s SLOWER PER LAP after a year of development. I thought, yea last year it was free air, now stuck in traffic a lot and hotter etc etc but that still doesnt account for it. its a 70 lap race. Even if you account 14 seconds to being stuck in traffic, that would only put them on equal time to last year and literally the only other team who hadn't improved since last year is Sauber. Everyone else improved.

    • @youbetu18
      @youbetu18 2 месяца назад

the rumors might be true. however it cannot have been cheating. the car could have never been "illegal". every part that is in the car passes an FIA check so it was deemed legal at the time. what could have happened is that the FIA investigated deeper after a tip from other teams and found that some previously legal parts need to be removed as they are not in "the spirit of the rules" and gave RB a deadline to redevelop and remove them. like mercedes front wing last year. they brought it, FIA approved it, teams complained, FIA retracted it, Merc adjusted it. Thats not cheating. thats clever engineering in grey areas. RB might have done that, if rumors prove to be true and were told to remove the parts now. but there is no "cheating". thats just what toxic media likes to report for views.

@@youbetu18 nah, Red Bull was 1.5 seconds faster in quali compared to last year, the slower pace was definitely due to being stuck in traffic and driving in dirty air. There has been a cold war between Red Bull and McLaren for long time now, Zak Brown has attacked them on many topics, spreading fake rumours doesn't surprise me and we all know how Toto operates as well. But if someone wants to start a conspiracy theory they will always find " something". Look at Ferrari from the beginning of the year until year until now, absolutely no progress. Probably has to do more with Newey leaving than anything else.

@@madalinbpopa yea i think i 90% agree with you, like i said, im not one for believing blindly into these rumors. i just wanted to say that they are not unfounded. there is definitely problems with the development plan or something that is causing them problems. at the same time only max seems to be able to keep the RB in the race for the front while checo magically went from getting easy 2nds to fighting to get into the points.
curb riding has been an issue before but now the balance of the car is completely off. its just strange.

In my opinion, hamilton misjudged Max's speed and didn't see him locking up, he wanted to do the old switcheroo and turned in on max, so he could've avoided it and gone straight like everyone does wen they're pushed wide

It was short sighted of McLaren to tell Lando to let Oscar by because not only has Lando been with them through bad times, they will regret it later in the season when every point will be needed for the drivers championship, the fans hate "manufactured" results especially as It wasn't a case of the second driver being noticeably faster to catch someone in front. RB & Max is hilarious, toys & pram come to mind.

I wouldn't go that far as to change team, but imo if I was in Lando shoes it would be a huge damage to the relationship with my race engineer on professional term. He's supposed to be the one guy in the team Lando trusts most, but it's ugly to be emotionally blackmailing your driver. Okay sure, let's accept Lando is in the wrong and should move over, I would rather be cursed at over the radio, but be straight about the message, rather than be emotionally blackmailed and gaslighted.

Why can't you call it like you see it. Why is it that if you make an analysis call, that seems to favour one driver over another, all of a sudden you don't like one driver and like the other one, or worse, you're accused of bias based on nationality ( which is comical given your background when it comes to Lando v Oscar at least 😊)
It's absolutely preposterous and I'm over it tbh. Proper analysis means that on any given weekend where a controversy exists, that analysis may result in criticism of a driver or team. This will change depending on the circumstances. Why can't people disagree with your analysis and not accuse you of favouritism or bias. To use a relevant recent word: It's childish.
