I'm sharing a criticism my dad always laid on me. Don't cast so far, work all the water close to you and if nothing bites cast a bit farther. He caught so many more steelhead than I it was embarrassing. Because of the great gear you overlook what's right in front of us. Good luck and the steelhead videos are amongst my favorites. Chuck

Once you kept your second steelhead you are required by the DFG to stop fishing for them. You could get a big fine if caught still fishing for them.

DieHard. A couple tips from the NW for steel. #1). Lose the mono mainline and move to a high vis braid with a bumper. Much easier to mend and see. #2). Put a contrasting color corkie above your bobber and under your bead/bobber stop. This will help you know if your gear is fouled under the float. That corkie should always be on top of your bobber but if not your leader and bead setup is probably fouled. #3) "Waterfall" some split shot below your main in deeper water as this will keep your bead fishing on the bottom. #4). You're reeling when the fish is pulling drag on the spinning rod. Bad news for twisting your line up. Just sayin. Good luck out there.

For bait fishing steel, a bouncing betty rig works great to avoid bottom snags and feel more strikes. On the hook end one trick that avoids snags and works exceptionally well is using a mini marshmallow and your bait. The classic is a Kraft mini marshmallow and then a couple cocktail shrimp

Steelhead up to 28 lbs here on 8 lb mono and Kings up to 47 lbs on 8 lb mono ...if you think you have to use braided line it's because you suck at fishing.... keep your braided line in the delta where it belongs... 8 lb mono folks...half a centurys worth

According to CDFW regs, you can not keep fishing after you catch your daily bag limit. If you want to catch and release, you have to do it before taking the last of your limit. If you end up gut hooking a fish and it bleeds out, you just killed a fish you can't keep. I know that's unlikely with that setup but stuff happens...

I don't mean to be a jackass but people shouldn't be fishing steelhead at all. Reason why fisheries are trying to repopulate them. I suppose its fair game though. It's been 70 years or more the hatcheries have been trying to re-populate these. Granted that these are planters. Most people don't know that what a Steelhead is...it is a Rainbow trout cross bread with a cutthroat that has been out to the ocean and came back to breed. Much like the Salmon. I don't think people know that. It's an old school cross.

If it's legal to fish for Steelhead then you shouldn't have a problem with it. If you do, go to your local government and complain and go comment on a Patagonia page where they all believe Steelhead should be native and sacred. I bet they'd know the definition of what a steelhead is..... unlike us lackeys. Really though, this is a fishing VLOG. It's about fishing for species we all are legally licensed to fish for. You're in the group to be providing opinions on who should fish for what. Now get off my lawn.

Good day Adam, so I am not sure if you plan on fishing for landlocked kings this year. If you do you should try this set up for trolling. A brad cut plug short leading behind that maybe a foot or so two hook and a small herring fillet.. work great for those kings. I haven’t had a chance to try it at the lake you fished last year.. good luck tight lines…

Brought my tiny 4 1/2 foot eagle claw pole, I showed up at the river and a hatchery worker dude was yelling at me to cast next to the bushes. I let my lure swim about 5 feet away from me next to the bushes and I watched a 10 pound steelhead take my lure. It had its way with me and broke me off way down river in some brush. Hope he was able to spit the lure out.

The first thing I noticed about this reel is its weight ruclips.net/user/postUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . I wouldn't say it was uncomfortable but it was a little heavier than other similarly sized reels. However, that didn't deter my enjoyment of how smooth this reel is. I spooled it with 20lb. Tuf-Line XP and it's perfect for what I use it for. I have it paired with an 8'6" Medium/Fast Okuma SST Salmon/Steelhead rod. The combination is perfect for casting and even drifting. I used the reel all day and didn't experience any arm or hand fatigue except when fighting a few fish! The bail is solid and feels strong when engaging by reeling and manually closing the bail by hand. The large rubber handle grip is very comfortable. It's got a powerful drag, silky smooth reeling, and feels very comfortable in the hands. I recommend it!

Interesting these CA steelhead will spawn multiple times. The "Clearwater" strain will spawn once and spend more continuous years in the ocean, or at least generally the case. They are more like Pacific salmon and less like "trout'. I would love to catch one of those "Clearwater" strain.

Spot on about the difference between river fishing and saltwater. Freshwater fish have time to contemplate the bait and make a better decision than fish competing in the ocean or swimming in chaotic surf. The only exception I can think of in freshwater is catfish. They will bite just about anything as long as it smells good.

  • @frankkawasaki3082

Very good video, I believe the Dept of Fish and Game is reducing their hatchery operations, as the hatchery fish are inferior to wild steelhead. , There are times when steelhead fisherman could be walking in salmon redds, so be aware of where you are walking as a sportsman. You could have pointed out the adipose fin on the steelhead you catch so that your viewers will know and be able to identify hatchery vs wild steelhead. Continue to have fun, but always be aware of the conservation aspects of our sport. We need to be advocates of our quarry, or there will no longer be a quarry to fish for in our future. The numbers of fish we catch and eat should not be our goal.

That's great work, congrats! So maybe I missed it but what's the bait under his bobber? Or under yours? I know roe is popular. What about nightcrawlers, minnows, salmon eggs, crawdads, etc? I'm in NorCal about 100 miles north of Sacramento. I've focused on trout in the streams & rivers but drought and fires have seriously hurt trout fishing over the last few years so I've been trying to improve my skills in other areas. So many species, so little time! Thanks and Best Wishes

Steelhead and Rainbow trout are genetically the same fish. If a rainbow trout lives in a watershed that has unimpeded access to the ocean, It may act anadromous (sea faring) like the rest of the salmonoid family can.

Steelhead are ocean rainbows. Basically. They are more chrome from the salt water. They come upstream to spawn . Rainbow trout never reach the ocean and stay freshwater their whole lives
