I always find it amusing when non indigenous people try to claim connection to indigenous community when they can not grasp what kinship means to indigenous people. Its not a lost or historic concept. It is widely used across turtle land to this day. Indigenous people will always ask "whose your mom? Whose your dad? Whose your people?" trying to gain insight to any kinship ties that may exist between you two. Indigenous people know their history, culture and kinship information is all orally kept. A person lies.....well someone from the community has the knowledge of the truth and every time that lying person will be found out. It may take a while but they will get found out...usually when the person has gotten comfortable living a lie. Side note thanks for sharing your grandmother's life and truth. I love hearing about the strength and perseverance of the old people. Makes me appreciate the need to hold on to that knowledge and their teachings.

Can a person that is a Métis person still be claimed as a pretendant?
    Backstory:
This lady told people (in front of me) in the sharing circle in cree class that she is related to me because of Gary and Brent.
Gary WAS my uncle because he married my auntie from my mum side.
Gary & my aunt made brent ( aka my cousin lol)
Gary’s sister (who claimed to be related to me).
Gary and my aunt divorced two decades ago and that Métis lady never came in contact until now- we happen to accidentally be in the same cree class.
This Métis lady (Brent’s aunt) claims I’m related to her when I’m only related to my cousin Brent because brent’s mom is my aunt from my moms side lol!
I’m not Métis, so there isn’t any relation what’s so ever 😂 I’m First Nations from a different reserve because I’m not Métis from St. Albert, AB.
The next sharing circle in cree class I addressed the lies she shared, i spoke the truth in the sharing circle that this lady that claims to be related to me is false,
I mainly said to everyone in the sharing circle ‘’I’m only related to Brent because of Brents mom, not because of Gary, Gary was my uncle because he married in the family.’’
It’s the disrespect that person had the nerve to claim she’s related to me, that lady isn’t my aunt or any of the sort. No form of contact with Brent’s dad side of the family since that divorce happen so no idea why this person had the nerve to prove to other natives that she’s related to me when that’s bull crap. 💩
Sorry for the long message lol 😂

If they can prove real MESTIZA/Mestis , and that is 50% not 12z% then maybe.

That's absolutely wild that she just more or less claims to be part of your family. I've never understood how people can stand to claim Native ancestry when they don't have any. I have Native ancestry, specifically through my 4th great grandfather who was Seneca, and I have so much imposter syndrome when it comes to discussing it or engaging with that side of my heritage because in my head this little voice goes "well, you look white, so you can't claim that part of your ancestry". I literally don't get how people can just falsely claim that sort of thing and feel no guilt. I have ancestry and I feel awkward claiming it because I don't want to look like a pretendian 😂

Wonderful history and a great job telling it. Thank you for sharing. Also shame on those who ride on the backs of others claiming to be what they are not. (I also was just eating bannock using your recipe video while watching this. Yum!) Thank you.
