    Project Farm on RUclips tested these units and this unit came out on top, by far. Compressor is loud is the only bad thing. Plus it’s heavy, but like you said, lead acid battery. That’ll do better in the cold.

    Are you sure you can recharge the unit using the 12v plug or is it just the AC plug 🔌 Because the instructions doesn’t say you can recharge it with your 12v

      Hello yellow jacket,
      Thank you for your comment and question. I think you were absolutely right I made a mistake in my description. Yes I’ve checked my unit out and I just charge it with a small electrical extension cord either plugged in at home or into my vehicle that has a 110 outlet. No the 12 old plugs are for output only not charging. Thanks for correcting me. Consider subscribing. Thanks, Joe.

      Hey there thank you for your question. Yes it should have no problem jumpstarting AMG batteries. Best regards, Joe.

  • @philmenges9887
    @philmenges9887 Год назад

    I'd prefer a jump starter with an AGM type battery enclosed, as opposed to lead-acid. AGM's are maintenance-free and tightly sealed, negating the chance for any battery acid spillage. Also, it would be nice to know approximately how many jump starts (12V car battery) one might expect between power bank re-charges.

    • @JosephHunstad
      @JosephHunstad  Год назад +1

      Hello Phil. Thanks for your excellent comment. AGM batteries do you have any advantages for sure. The disadvantage of courses cost. They are significantly more expensive but they have 2 to 3X lifetime over lead acid. This gym starter is not AGM but has worked very well in my experience. If you find an AGM jump starter that you think is great please let me know. I’d be very interested. Consider subscribing. Thanks Joe.

      @@JosephHunstad My pleasure-and thanks for your thoughtful and prompt reply, Joe. To begin with, the price of a power bank charger is only secondary to us. Of utmost concern is not to be stranded-especially at a location where standard jumper cables are impracticable. Over the 4th of July, my wife’s late-model Mazda had sat for just 5 or 6 hours in a parking space, while we were visiting over a backyard cookout. When we went to go home, the car battery was completely drained-not even enough millivolts left in the battery to operate the key fob to unlock the car!
      It was late in the evening, so our son drove us home (only a few blocks away). The following morning, he put his charger on the battery long enough to start the vehicle, and drove it over to our house. [I’ve had years of experience with electrical problems, but had never seen anything quite like this. the Start button was pressed, to shut off the engine, all accessories were off, and all doors were completely closed.]
      Turned out, after taking it into the Mazda dealer for a diagnostics check, that there was a glitch between the ignition and the transmission shifter. Long and short of it is, when the engine was shut down, the _accessories_ were still ON. As you are most likely aware, virtually all late-model cars are equipped with an “engine control unit,” which is the “brain” of the vehicle. From this ECU, all peripheral electrical modules, relays, solenoids, etc. are regulated (and this central unit must be kept “alive” at all times).
      Sorry for the long digression there, but it’s worth the extra money involved to ensure that my wife has the most reliable solution onboard, in case of emergency-so that she does not have to “rely upon the kindness of strangers” (which is a serious consideration when you look at the present state of our society).
      The model I’m looking at is the CRAFTSMAN CMXCESM256 1200 Peak Amp Jump Starter and Portable Power Station ($145 at Amazon): www.amazon.com/CRAFTSMAN-CMXCESM256-Starter-Portable-Station/dp/B09TSHYWVN/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8
      It does come with an AGM battery … but the question is, how long will the unit itself hold its charge-especially in the winter months? [Judging by the weight and dimensions, it would certainly not have the same storage capacity as a 12V car battery.]
      Another consideration, that I’ve seen touted online, is the Noco Genius UltraSafe Lithium Jump Starter: 500 Peak Amp, 12V, Power Bank ($99.99): shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/noco-genius-ultrasafe-lithium-jump-starter-500-peak-amp-12v-power-bank-gb20/12067649-P?source=certona
      What I _like_ about this option is its compact size-very easy to stow and handle, for even smaller women. Sure, it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of a full-blown power station-but we already have a portable air compressor (which runs off a cigar lighter outlet).
      What we _don’t_ like about these compact units are the lithium-ion batteries-the likes of which are _known_ to have caught fire or exploded in the past, albeit on rare occasions. Of course, anyone who has a laptop computer, a smartphone-or any of a number of handheld devices-runs the remote risk of a fire hazard. [While I could live with the tiny odds of a lithium-ion explosion, my wife definitely cannot!]
      Adding to the conundrum, we live in a location that has long, hot summers. Further, while it could be just 90-100 degrees outside, the car thermometer reading can get up to 110 F. (or more) under the hood. According to the National Fire Sprinkler Association, one of the rules to help prevent lithium-ion fires is, “Do not store [lithium-ion] devices in windows or in hot vehicles”: nfsa.org/2023/01/12/lithium-ion-battery-fires/
      So, there you have it Dr. Joe. I gave you a lot to chew on here, but am eagerly awaiting your thoughts. And please forgive my long-winded reply!

    • @JosephHunstad
      @JosephHunstad  Год назад +2

      @@philmenges9887 hello again, Phil,
      I read your response with great interest. You’ve obviously given this considerable thought. Another simple option, is to buy a battery load test unit and every six months or so do a load test on your wife’s battery and if it fails replace that battery, then the need for jumping it goes away.
      Every jump starter has certain limitations based on their construction. Lithium ion batteries have fire problems more typically while they’re charging then when they’re resting even when they get hot.
      I’m interested in what you choose for your final solution. Please let me know. Thanks Joe.
