    During memorial day weekend I decided to take my family to Rehoboth beach. During recent visits there I have spent a great deal of time fishing along the banks of Lake Gerar, which is watershed within a stones throw from the beach!
    Having been in the market for a cheap and cheerful travel rod I recently picked up the Ugly Stick GX2 for $26 from Amazon, which is honestly a bit of a steal given that the combo normally retails around $50. Again, I was looking for a simple two-piece combo, no frills, so the GX2 fit the bill nicely.
    Also, preemptive apologies for the *sniff sniff*. Hayfever was brutal.

    “Entry level rod” buddy this is one of the toughest rods out there and I’ve caught everything from 16 pound carp down to bluegill and baby bass on this rod and everything in between. Going on 4 years and still catching fish. This rod is underrated

      It's a solid setup. The rod is heavier but a 10ft surf rod it is not. I'd say the reel is pretty average but will suffice for entry level needs.
      If you have a bit more in your budget a med/light rod with a budget reel is a fantastic freshwater option.

    • @otpfishing968
      @otpfishing968  5 лет назад +2

      The GX2 does not come pre-spooled so you have to purchase the line separately. The type of line & size would depend entirely on what you're looking to target (freshwater vs. saltwater etc.)
      For freshwater I typically go with 12lb braided line as an all-purpose line, pairing that with an 8lb fluorocarbon leader for finesse presentations (worms etc.)
      Let me know what you're trying to target and I can try and be more specific with line recommendations, though. I'm not expert but I'd be happy to help you out if you're just jumping into the hobby.

      @@danielmedhurst5737 Really depends what you're planning to throw.... it's a heavy, cumbersome rod so finesse rigs are not ideal (drop shotting for instance), but moving baits like cranks, spinners, chatterbaits etc ? Will do just fine.
      6'6 medium would be an all rounder, including for canal Pike - don't worry about it being a 2pc. The reel that comes with the GX2 combo is solid, but if you want to spend. Little more Lew's and Pflueger have some decent reels around the $50 mark.

    • @otpfishing968

      I'll be honest, those species I have almost zero experience with. Pike were something we fished for in England but we're talking about 15+ years ago... I don't even think I've SEEN an actual pike in VA since I moved here lol
      That being said are you going straight braid or braid to leader? Straight braid I can't see why 12-15lb wouldnt be fine (speaking to smaller Pike here specifically). Kastking ain't bad, always served me well - even if everything else they sell is suspect.

    I’m still new to fishing myself. But you might be having an issue because you put 12lb test on a rod only designed for 10lb test at 175 yards. It also looks like you maxed out the spool. I believe reels are designed to specific line weights and lengths to ensure proper casting and reeling. The video was very informative! I just wanted to point out what I noticed.

    • @otpfishing968
      @otpfishing968  4 года назад +1

      Most reels are rated for mono or fluro - rarely braid. I've got that spool loaded but it is braided line so I'll always get more yardage vs. what the reel is rated for (the thickness of braid being less than mono etc)
      Would have to watch the video back but I don't think I was having issues that day, never really do with braid tbh.
      Appreciate you pointing it out though, maybe I could have had a little less on there so no worries.

      Tighten the drag if there is little to resistance when you pull the line. The knob on the top of the spool will allow you to do this. If you were referring to the line on the spool itself try taking the spool off and placing it in lute warm water for a few minutes. It may help.

      @otpfishing968  4 года назад

      If it's not staying on the spool it may have something to do with how you put it on there. You have to keep tension on the line when you put in on the spool.
      Make sure you're holding the line and applying tensions as it goes on - personally I like to hold the braid/fluro between my index finger and thumb, right below the first eye. This applies enough tension so that it wraps around the spool nice and snug.
      Also, when the line is on the spool take the spool off the reel and put it in lute-warm water for a minute or two.
