I switched from Denon to the RZ50 two years ago. Still a huge Denon fan, but the value was tough to beat making the jump to ATMOS. I run it as a processor (though I don't believe I have the preamp only mode in the RZ50). As you say Gene, I wish it was a 6 channel atmos platform. I was nervous jumping from Denon, but I have been surprised. With current pricing, huge value prop.

@@tomhermann6558 Yeah I just got the RZ50 and at $999 on Amazon it’s the best bang for my buck. I’m running the Emotiva XPA DR3 for my front stage but had to use my old Denon to run rear surrounds in order to have rear height speakers connected to the internal amp channels on the Onkyo RZ50. Just seeing if it’s worth the $1k jump in cost to get into the RZ70.

Thank you Gene for posting detailed videos about this Onkyo receiver a couple of weeks ago, here in Perth Western Australia it was on sale at West Coast HiFI stores for $3,748 normally $5,000 , it’s replacing my Onkyo TX-NR708. I am redoing my home theatre room, I wish I Knew, what I know now about 24 years ago when I had my home built, I included a dedicated room for home theatre, I would have gone 500 millimeters larger, and added stud walls to soundproof it, we build double brick exterior and single brick interior walls, I went with 2.5 metre high ceilings, which is 30 courses of brick, instead of the standard 28 courses.
Thank you again, I’ve watched a lot of your videos and learn’t some interesting information. Take care, Gary 😊

Please always change the passwords, the receiver might not be interesting in itself, but it might have access to other devices on your network, enabling a hacker to use it as a proxy. The proxy can then be used to attack other things in your network, which eventually might result in access to your computer for example.

Can someone tell me if the Onkyos behave the same way as other AVRs, such as the Denons, when it comes to sound modes and the way they behave with certain codecs?
I just set up a Denon x2800 as a former diehard Onkyo fan, and I can't get my head around the way I have to switch sound modes via the remote with every disc I play (if I watch a disc that doesn't make the Denon drop back to the last mode used).
I can't stand how you have to switch to a different correct mode for every new piece of content; but is this just the way the new AVRs work now because of the Dolby Surround and DTS Neural upmixers?
I'm used to my old Onkyo 605 using Pro Logic II for two channel signals while auto switching for all appropriate surround modes....do the new Onkyos behave this way via the remote as well?

With regard to Speaker Virtualizer - does this affect the Dolby Surround upmixer when both are engaged in a 5.1 system and you play a non-Atmos track?
I only have a 5.1 setup with surround speakers in the ceiling above us, but I don't want the upmixers to mess with the normal 5.1 tracks on discs, yet from what I'm told, the upmixers don't engage - even though they light up on the front of the AVR - when it's a 5.1 system, because there's really nothing to "upmix" to.
Does the Virtualizer affect this in any way?

  • @MikeMargolis-j8f

    Gene,
Could you touch on something for me when you have a second?
I used to be a diehard Onkyo fan, but lost interest in their AVRs when they made two changes: dropping the "IntelliVolume" input leveling system, and removing the front display's ability to show both the source name and sound mode at the same time.
I ended up going with a Denon x2800 because of this to replace our old Onk TX-SR605. I was aware of the "My Input Volume" feature on newer Onkyos, and I thought this was meant to replace IntelliVolume - but I was under the impression that this didn't work the same way as IntelliVolume, instead being used as a way to set individual sources' starting volume.
Does My Input Volume actually work like other input level adjustment systems, where you can "boost" or "cut" the input trim, like a power amp's input level control?

    • @hoopdyhop76
      @hoopdyhop76 2 месяца назад +2

Have both, running external amplification in both cases. I would say it depends on how much control you need over your subwoofers. Do you need separate sub outs? Do you want Dirac Live Bass control? If the answer is yes to those two questions then get the 70, if not you may be better off with the 50, depending on the amps you use externally.

Comparing the Onkyo TX-RZ70 with Yamaha A6A/A8A, the Yamaha has "Surround AI" which seems to override standard Atmos processing when enabled. Assuming my understanding is correct, does the Onkyo have anything equivalent to "Surround AI" and, if not, is it losing anything as a result.
Sorry if this is a dumb question but I am overwhelmed by all the processing options and marketing gobbledegook in modern surround sound processors,

You don't need to match power ratings of a speaker with output power of your amplifier. The Onkyo will deliver 170 watts/ch 2CH driven at 8 ohms and close to 300 watts @ 4ohms which the SVS towers are. You've got plenty of power to drive them well.

Gene...about that preamp mode. I'm looking for it in the manual and can't find it. I was wondering if selecting front only turns off the front L/R or is it L/C/R? Would be nice if you could do L/C/R for people that want equal power across the front 3 channels. Otherwise you're stuck with only having a 2 ch for front L/R or needing to externally amplify all your channels if you turn the preouts off.
Its probably splitting hairs on whether you'll hear a difference if you leave the preamps all on or turn off the ones needed by still would be nice to have individual control.

@DavidCNavas DLNA streaming works great. I use minimserver on a laptop and it seems to be rock solid.
