I have a lot of gratitude for this version: the vocals are not limited to cowering behind any "spoken-word" facade of "cool": its the real thing: live means a little more raw: but they have retained the love that is in this song. They have retained the love in this song. Gratitude to the Counting Crows for re-inventing this song to hear it again!
Adam writes the best lyrics... "everytime she sneezes, I believe it's love and oh lord, I'm not ready for this sort of thing" A man who can write, will have my heart forever.
" ... kindness falls like rain ..." This version is one of the best I've seen so far of my favorite Counting Crows song (and I've seen a few through the years ..). Perhaps I like it because it is very similar to my "all time favorite" version found on the "Across a wire" double live CD. There are also some pretty bad versions out there of course - just imagine how many times they must have played this over the last 25 years or so. So kudos to the Crows for continuing to play this beautiful song for us fans " ...every time she sneezes I think it's love ..."
well put. I am a HUGE NIN fan and know exactly what u mean. He has never detatched from the emotion of a song that has been done thousands of times. one of my favorirte memories of all time was when I saw Reznor do "Hurt" live back in 2006. Kudos to you my fellow NIN appreciator.
Part 2. She says "OH well, as long as this is love". But its not all that easy. "I do the same things over and over again". This song is spot on with my recent broken engagement. I need to work on myself before I find my mate. I'm sorry baby. I never meant to hurt you. Please forgive me. God, Adam thank you soo much for this song. In a way its a closure and helps me to move on and work on myself. I'm turning 28 in a few days so I still have time to fix my life and me. Thanks again Adam.
the most brilliant song in the world and a man that "never loved me' said that it reminded him of me.. who is the fool.. me or him... but Brian Gosper i will love you always... you were the man i was to give everything of me.. and i knew y0ur weaknesses and i loved you anyway... Monica you take care of him...
Actually, this isn't a new version. They've been playing this "Version" of Anna Begins for years. If you are a Counting Crows fan, you have reconciled the fact that the song you love will not be played the same time twice in any two shows. More times than not, that's what makes people like me keep coming back, rediscovering the same song we love, over and over in a new way. :)
I like this version, it still holds the emotional value of the original recording the artists are older is all. I mean they have played this song ALOT of times. They are a little detatched from it is all. Still good.
Some singers who try to adlib the recorded version of a song stink the song up. Adams lyrical style is in a league of his own. His words are so complex & meaningful I believe his emotional state of mind that he is in at that particular moment determines the flow of his songs. He pulls it off 99% of the time with brilliance. After all he is human !!! is he ??? lol Genius in my book...
@Noellenc It is the artist's prerogative to perform the song in whatever way they want. It is their song after all. The words are the same, but he is obviously feeling differently about the situation than he did when he wrote it/performed it some 10 years before this video was posted.
@Noellenc You're obviously not a Crows fan. Adam frequently extends and rewrites songs when he performs them live. He loves to mix in verses from other songs, often not even his own. You will never hear the same version of most CC songs in concert, specifically Round Here, Anna Begins, A Murder of One, and Rain King. I've seen them in concert 4 times over the years and each show is like seeing them again for the first time. Incredible.
This song is similar to my 2nd broken engagement. Especially the lyrics "Its all or nothing" "You tell yourslefThe things you try to tell yourelf to make yourself forget" "You wrap her up in a package of lies and send her to a coconut island'. "The status of my emotions oh she says your changing, well were always changing". "It its love she says then we're gonna have to think about the consequences. She can't stop thinking and I can't stop touching her" "I'm not ready for this kind of thing"

@bela712 :hm.... maybe I should translate some of my lyrics into english and send them to you! ;-) Don't worry, I'm just being kind of ... maybe thoughtful. I wish somebody else would have told me exactly this (especially one certain person). I really respect people who are intelligent and emotionally strong enough to appreciate songwriters and their work. Have a good time und greetings from Germany :-)
Maybe they feel that they are letting the fans down by simply re-creating the same sound that is on the album. Maybe they feel that people like the way they interpret their songs live, which MIGHT also be why they are such big fans in the first place. Even classical musicians play the most well-known symphonies differently than the original score because interpretation is one of the most important aspects of music. CC is very influenced by jazz as well, a genre that is grounded on improvisation.
Most realy good bands try and re-create a studio version of what they play live for a studio record. they sound better live and do it differently every time. Who the hell wants to see a choreographed version of this @ every show???
@lennartisermoevan It doesn't have to be an exact replica, but this "interpretation" is so different from the vocal of the original it's like a runaway train (in my opinion). I also feel like he is singing the same notes too often in this version. Sure, he made it different but I think he lost the melody with all that ad-lib.
I think it goes without saying that "doing a song justice" and "sloppy bad karaoke" are totally subjective statements. You might hear this version of the song in these ways just like people who don't like the original version in comparison to those that appreciate it. Ask yourself this; do you really think that the reason that you don't like this version is because it lacks the musical integrity that the original did, or simply because it is not the same as it is on the record?
@Jackwell1029384756 Agree. One of my major pet peeves about Counting Crows. Sometimes they deviate so far from actually singing the song, it just seems to ruin it.
Furthermore, don't you think that if they were simply trying to pay the bills, they would just go up there and play songs like Mr. Jones, Hangin' Around, and Accidentally In Love every show? Anna Begins is definately not one of their most well-known songs. The fact that they are playing it differently also points to the fact that they probably feel that if they were to play it the way it was recorded "for the billionth time", it would begin to just get old for both them and their fans.
Did he have to sing every word differently than the recorded version? The music sounds amazing but if he'd sung it this way on the record.... to be honest.... I would never have loved it as much. It takes away from the melody with all that improv, and kudos if you like that sort of thing, but I'm missing something.
Fair enough ponywonka. It's a good thing you didn't pay to see it. I suppose you could say "sell-out". I'm not sure how exactly. They are very mainstream anyway. take it easy.
Maybe they're making music for themselves and not for your taste. And why see them live if you just want to hear the song the way it's recorded? Just buy the CD and stay home and listen to that. I'm pretty sure everyone would be happier that way.
I really like this group. Their songs are so great, I am tired of hearing them live. There Studio Album Versions are so much better. I wish the lead singer would loose the booze, It really hurts his live act terribly. I have never seen someone trach his own songs so badly.
Someone said it perfectly when they said that improv is great and it definitely is welcome but to distort the entire melody of every single line of every single verse. No one wants lip synching, but how about just performing the song and doing it justice? So if the choice is between lip synching and sloppy bad karaoke.....
Finally, don't you think that music should at least be somewhat heartfelt? Do you think maybe the way he feels when he sings the song changes every once in a while? Maybe you should just start listening to Pop artists that just lip-synch all their songs live. WHAT THE HELL WOULD BE THE DIFFERENCE?? Seriously, tell me that. Maybe you'd like them to put down their instruments and do some dance choreography N'Sync style?
I am a HUGE counting crows fan but I don't like how adam sings live..He always does some kind of vegas crooner caricature of himself and constantly messes with the melody and his phrasing way too much and he's not a good enough singer to pull it off, IMO...I love the melody of the songs (anna begins is lyrically and melodically one of my favorite songs of all time ) but why does he refuse to sing them that way live? I prefer the recorded versions which is kind of sad...
Absolutely wonderful version, so heartfelt. Adam and the Crows are the best ever.

i love the way he improvises in every preformance !!!!! he made every lyric perfect!
One of my favorite songs of all time. First time I've seen a live version!
Awesome song I'm 40 now reminds me of Brecon jazz and being 21

really, I love to watch e listen Adam in "live version". Every song is particular and intimate.
Anyway, the Conting Crows, are the best :)

I love this song and you know why.......always.

if you wanna here the song exactly like it is on the CD, then listen to the CD...Adam is a fantastic live singer.

This song nearly makes me cry--but I fight it.

Loving it

This is one of the sexiest songs ever.

Adam's not black. He's a Russian-Jew American impersonating African Jamaican.
