As a brazilian I can say that açai has made its way within Brazil in the past 10 to 15 years. Nowadays it is spread all over the country. And I think the popularity here is the same as bubble tea in Asia. Before açaí, ice cream shops were very popular. But nowadays most of them have changed to only sell all types of açaí bowls you can imagine. The most common places are really cheap and offer the sweetened one. Other fancier places offer 100% organic açai.
Uhm maybe in some parts of Brazil, I'm from Rio and although açai is not native to here it's definitely been popular for much longer than 15 years. Maybe because there are a lot of people that moved here from the northeast. It is very dessert like most often than not but there are some more traditional açai shops with unsweetened açai and tapioca balls as the only topping.
As a Brazilian from Belém, in the Amazon forest, I can tell you that my breakfast is fresh açaí. It’s not so common, but there are people like me. Some people have it as their lunch (with fish, jerked beef, shrimp etc) or like a desert(with sugar).

As a Brazilian, I can say we consume açaí as a treat, just like having ice cream on a hot day. However, I prefer açaí over ice cream cause it has a very distinct taste and it mixes well with different toppings. Of course you can find healthier versions around here, but it's not the rule.
I would get the unsweetened acai pulp if possible. But those at shops usually use the sweetened one and quite exp, I just treat it more like dessert. So just get the packets unsweetened ones and add your own fruits to blend if you want healthier options
Best food to eat are always local regional and seasonally grown. This trend of marketing exotic foods as healthy for all helps companies not people who eat it.
açai in brazil is more like a treat than what it´s sold outside of our country. they use sugar syrup, some like adding bunch of topics like condensed milk, nuts, paçoca, chocolate, banana etc.... it can be a healthy treat if u do it urself or ask at the lunch bar to not add any syrup and just mix it with banana
I love how real Ms. Jacqueline was !!!! Her sales will go thru the roof due to her honesty. As a consumer I want to be able to trust the company I’m purchasing from.
I never believed its still full of antioxidant because real antioxidant are very fragile. Light, air or heat can degrade it. I eat it for taste and I love the color. In fact I view it as unhealthy food cos of the sugar. Sadly I haven't have access to unsweeten version before. I only ate 5 times my whole life and its all at restaurants.
Consuming sugar in low or moderate amounts won't kill you. A little sugar won't harm. However, excessive amounts of sugar consumption can do a lot of damage if unmitigated. It all goes down to balancing how much you eat, as well as paying attention to the quality of what you eat.
Not all sugars are made equal. The 11g of sugar in sweetened acai is refined and an absolute shitshow for your health. It is not the same a ls fructose and sucrose contained within high-fiber whole fruits. Refined sugar does and will harm you

I am Brazilian and I was born in Cerrado area, where there is not açaí palms. I've learned to eat açaí with a roommate that came to Brasilia to have a masters degree, she is from Pará, one of the states in Amazon area. I learned with her to eat açaí with tapioca, as dinner. It was pure açaí with tapioca flakes. I eat like this since, and love it, but I don't eat every day. In some very hot days I eat frozen açaí with bananas, as an iced treat. There are many ways to eat açaí, and this way as a sweet bowl started in Bahia, a northwest state in Brazil, where the açaí pulp was taken frozen and blended whith guaraná syrup. It was a treat to releave the heat and to gain energy to workout. After this the açaí bowl was everywhere in Brazil like a summer sweet treat and a pre workout meal and started to gain aditons like Granola and condensed milk.
I was craving acai bow from protein lab as I used to get it from there. Then I asked myself why is it so delicious I figured they may use the sugary acai. I went to target bought myself sugar free acai packs. Bought some frozen summer blend fruits and already had frozen berry mix. Bought strawberry shortcake granolas. Went home and made myself some delicious acai bowl. Added a whole banana and some strawberries, peanut butter, coconut strips and raw honey. Natural sugars and delicious.
From what I’ve experienced in Brazil we use guaraná syrup to sweeten it still keeping it healthy and tastes delicious but that doesn’t mean that the syrup is healthy it’s a not so bad version of sugar
