    this deserves a lot more views, everyone wants to learn this stuff in 5 minutes, but clearly is something that deserves a lot of hours to really understand, you were so clear thanks a lot!

    I had learned in the past that you should keep your levels going into signal processors at -18dB, not close to zero. The explanation was that this was the optimal level for old analog gear, and digital simulations of older gear was likewise optimized for this level.
    I like what you said about maximizing the high signal to noise ratio, and that makes sense to me. In the digital world, it doesn’t make sense to me to reduce the dynamic range of a signal, because you want to be able to use all 16 (or 24) bits to reduce digital aliasing when increasing the gain later down the mixing path.
    So, what’s the real story? Are effects plugins optimized for -18dB, or is that horse pocky and should you aim for getting closer to 0
    PS. The guys on The Mastering Show podcast say that you should really aim for -2 to -1.5 dB to leave some headroom for mixing and mastering engineers.

      This process makes the most sense to me as well. But I wonder if having the signals close to 0db before bringing the faders done will cause problems when mastering a song, or should the headroom on the master channel prevent that?

    Thanks, this is really helpful - if I am recording a hardware synth into Ableton would peak input level should I be aiming for?

    • @steveknots514
      @steveknots514 3 года назад +2

      leave a generous amount of headroom when recording. peak level -9db more or less. you can always turn it up later... but you can't repair a burnt recording that got recorded with clipping and distortion at input

    Hey, once you've completed the gain-staging process and let's say you wish to add an echo effect to the sound, would you need to compensate for the additional gain by lowering the output gain on the echo plugin?

    • @boymatmat
      @boymatmat 3 года назад +2

      There is a M4L device that is called volume compensator, i think it’s free and it’s purpose is to maintain che same level of an instrument after you use # effect , look it up

      yes. you always need to measure gain after every device you add
