Howdy hey baes, a subscriber disclosed to me that they paid a $30 detangling fee before at a natural hair salon. I guess I wasn’t the only one. What are your thoughts?

I agree completely it sucks lol i hate them ripping my hair just because they dont know how to comb. Thats the main thing i noticed with these ladies in these salons.

My hair always breaks off when i go to salons. Now i don't unless on rare occasions for a style
Yep I am done with getting my hair braided and salons period! Unless I can find someone I really trust. Some of them will rip through your coils and pull your hair out! Now you have to cut off more hair because of the damage that they caused!

I still have ppl telling me I look better with long lacefronts. The revolutionary in me is committed to not satisfying what ppl what for me vs. following my truth. My soul is craving to rock my natural hair so that is what we are doing. Regardless of what society deems as more “fitting” for a Black woman with type 4 hair. #Overit.
Agree with you 💯, been natural 10 years also and when I just went natural I got bullied a lot for embracing my natural hair. I also do not go to natural hair stylists as I feel also that they think of themselves as some kind of elite because they are “obliging “ me to do my hair. The fees are exorbitant and I refuse to pay $ 400 for a wash and go and trim. I also get compliments on my natural hair and have had many young people thank me for giving them the confidence to rock their natural hair. I go everywhere with my Afro out weddings work ( I am in banking) and feel sad for black women who are so insecure that they cannot leave home without the wigs which eat their hairlines and foreheads and hide their beautiful eyes behind the ridiculous looking bat false lashes. Not against wigs or lashes but let’s use them to enhance not hide from ourselves. Thanks for making this video.

it genuinely feels like a lot of black hair stylists are purposefully ignoring the importance of maintaining and improving a client’s hair.
the added fees are just another example of the lack of regard.
i have never left a hairdresser happy, even as a kid.
when i started college i realized i needed to learn how to braid, and do my own hair. it has been a rewarding, but definitely filled with mistakes.
This was me. I didn’t have the liberty to go to hair salons a lot as a kid. Plus being African, I love my mom but she didn’t know how to do my hair outside of a relaxer or braids so I totally get it.
Mistakes come with lessons that help us grow and do better. I cannot wait to see how my hair loves me back this year ☺️🥹🙌🏾

I needed a trim…Today went to Great Clips and got a trim on my at home blown out hair for under $20! I stay out of hair salons for the most part and style my own.
Great Clips will do you right. A trim shouldn’t be more than $50 in my humble opinion.

I love this! I moved to houston 2 yrs ago and have been to 6 hair salons. Half are natural hair salons. Im over it. I paid a $20 detangling fee for combing conditioner through my hair. Confronted the stylist and didnt tip. Mind you this was a “natural hair salon.” Many blk stylist dont know how to or dislike doing blk natural hair. Just say it. I been natural going on 20yrs and ive seen the up&down of the natural hair movement. I havent worn my hair out much the last year but will wear it out more this year. All the hassle with salons makes me want to just hide under wigs but ive made a decision to embrace it.

I moved to Houston 3 years ago and I feel the same I am done with natural hair salons and braids too much money and they cut wayyy to much for a dusting/trim. I'll figure it out myself self.
I totally agree with you! I am in the UK and have to pay around £150 for a cut, blow dry and trim! It really annoys me so I only go once a year just so I get a proper trim!
Yeah that’ll def motivate me to learn how to cut my own hair but it’s so important to get a precise trim

Yep. When I started to embrace what my hair wanted to do, everything changed.
Girllllll you are the voice in my head! I was locking my hair and relying on the salon constantly for maintenance. 3 Locticians later , I realized they were all either taking shortcuts trying to force my hair to lock faster or reduce frizz (which I had no issues with) OR only cared about putting my hair in tight retwisted styles where I couldn’t see the damage being done until I took the expensive updo out. But as long as I looked laid walking out that door and they had their money, it was cool. I was noticing thin spots thru out my STARTER locs from all the pulling and hair pins. Scabs in my scalp from them interlocking without my consent.
I got fed up and combed them out and went back to washing/rinsing my hair almost DAILY like did in high school and my hair also loves it! And so does my wallet! My only issue is living in blistering cold winter, I need to be fully dry before heading to work. Can’t wait for and update on your regime ❤❤❤
oh wow what a story! I’m sorry you went through that. I’m glad your hair recovered and is loving the new routine. Daily washing is so nice. I’m actually about to do it now as I type. I have my diffuser ready to go when it’s colder out but even if you skip a day of washing and do every other day, your hair still benefits a lot. I’m excited to post my update in March!
I cut my hair blown out. Refuse to have anyone else blow it out though cuz theyre rough. I do a detailed wash with a protein and moisture treatment, blow out my hair gently with the tension method (id do the revair if it wasnt 400 bucks) and i head my ass to super cuts and get it cut for 30 bucks. They do my bangs and everything. Looks great curly every time (im 4a/4b ignore my profile pic i had heat damage lmao)

I agree. Going past a week for a wash causes crazy itches and a scalp oil that doesn't smell sexy. I have the kinky coils and I use a mixture of products both marketed towards me and just redken etc. Let’s do this one year together! I think we are all coming to the sane conclusion.

Thank you for having this honest and open discussion. I use some products that’s mainly for black women which is just Mielle hair milk, but for shampoo and conditioner I go between these three brands: tresseme, herbal essence and Nexxus. And my hair is soft and manageable when using these products and they’re not expensive like most black products. Nexxus is the most expensive but everything else is pretty affordable and last for MONTHS. And I have 4C hair.

Each person has to desire to appreciate and learn their hair texture. It's not difficult, each person simply has to set aside time and effort.
Natural hairstylist have gone too far. Charging $250 for a wash and flat twist.

The prices alone keep me away! lol I am not paying all that. I keep it simple with DIY mini braids or simple protective styles with no extensions. I've been retaining length without the salons so I'm doing something right.

It’s just important to appreciate the hair we have. God didn’t make a mistaken. We’re wonderfully made in His image.
Also, it’s important to do what works for you. Your hair looks great being washed everyday. I would never do that with my natural hair. I wash my hair once every two to three months, keeping my scalp clean in the meantime, and my hair is thriving! I haven’t been to a salon in 18 years. Even when I was relaxed and kept my hair in a cute, short pixie cut, I learned to do it myself. Most stylists will not care for our hair better than we will. That’s just a fact. You’re right, our hair is not a burden, unless you’re trying to manage it like a looser texture. Great video! 🌸

I find that my hair flourishes more with products such as Redken, Aussie Moist, Herbal Essences, and Suave. Whenever I used black hair products in the past, my hair would become so dry and would break off quite often. I usually wear braids, but your video is giving me the courage to go natural.

Charging extra for certain textures of hair or neglecting basic hair maintenance are red flags that you’re going to the wrong person. A stylist or hustler is not the same as a licensed cosmetologist. Even if you’re going to a natural stylist, make sure they’re licensed and/or trained by licensed professionals. Otherwise, you will have the experiences described in this video.
Unfortunately, a lot of stylists aren’t licensed and the girlies won’t know how to check for credentials bc they just want to get their hair done. Thanks for the tip.
So true! Fortunately, I stopped wearing wigs and began my loc journey 2 years ago after getting tired of wigs tearing up my hairline. But I even stopped going to my loctician and opted to maintain my locs myself after they were installed. Natural stylists, including locticians, can instill a sense of fear in clients to maintain their own heads. Loving my new growth and edges!

I wore my natural hair at my wedding. what annoyed me about wearing my natural hair initially was stylists telling me my hair "needs heat". I was told that so many times I stopped going. And I agree the natural salons can be pricy. Great video.

I enjoyed your video. I have not been to a hairdresser is over 5 years. It does make sense to broaden my use of all brands of hair products. I have tried to stay with natural black hair products and my hair NEVER feels moisturized.
Thank you so much doll. I still love my natural hair products but until I became “haircare agnostic” and using all brands of products my hair changed. My hair is more manageable now and it’s less tangles. I think it’s mainly due to embracing the hair practices that we are told we “shouldn’t” do (e.g. shampoo frequently)
a good shampoo + conditioner, leave in conditioner and an oil really is the foundation for me! Any extra products is for styling.

I recently had shoulder surgery and was forced to go to a local black hair salon for my natural hair. I had stopped going to salons 8 years ago because of poor service, crazy prices served with a dose of stank attitude on the side from the stylist. I could not believe I paid $145 for a wash, semi color rinse to my roots only, conditioner and 2 cornrows (my hair only). I was shook. I held my peace to get my behind out of there and said never again. BTW when she said when can I schedule for your next appointment the word bubble over my head was saying you must be crazy because I have no plans to return here.
Yep it’s really ridiculous. The prices do not reflect the value of the services rendered. I refuse to pay a natural hair tax bc of how the hair grows out of MY head.

Yes! I’m on day 16 now. Giving of a one month update to really share my full opinion. So by March it’ll be out! I wanna debunk the myth about hair washing bc it’s definitely been working for me
I have never been to a natural hair salon. I have always wanted to go. but it seems like i wasn't missing anything 😂😂. After i went natural, i started going to a domincan salon that washed, blow dryed,straightened, and trimed my hair for $50.
Now that’s music to my ears!!! $50 tops.
I use care free curl activator and blue magic hair grease or Softee bergamot hair grease, the activator really keeps my hair moisturize, and I like curl max activator as well

I'm with your on that, I used S Curl avtivator/moisturizer and blue magic hair grease as well and also Cantu Shea butter leave-in..my hair is so healthy..

I saw one on Tik Tok charge $450 for a wash, blow dry and trim - no styling - bc the clients hair was long (mid back length)
I feel you, girl. I don’t have type 4 curly hair, I have type 3b curly hair, but I stopped considering that as important. All throughout the curly and natural hair communities there are specialty products and stylists who are really more about making a profit than helping us care for our hair. Having survived the “curly girl method” and silly things like that, what I’ve learned about hair care is that our porosity and the thickness of our strands are the most important information we need when buying shampoos, conditioners and styling products, not our curl pattern. For example, I discovered I have high porosity, coarse hair, so I buy products specifically for my hair type. So figure out your porosity and go from there.
Also, I deadass would have told that stylist to take the detangling fee out of her tip. I definitely would have argued with her about that, in addition to not going back to her ever again.
I just never went back to her again. Lesson learned and glad my hair is thriving now.
I use products that aren't marketed towards black women or coily hair but that's because I live in a country where almost everyone has bone straight hair naturally and black people are less than 0.01% of the population. However, I prefer natural coily hair products for certain things so I order from overseas when I can. I've also had some local shampoos tear up my hair, so hair might be hair but fine coily hair has some different hair needs than coarse straight hair. Anyway, I use a mix of products on my hair - local Asian ones, American ones for natural coily hair, and American/European ones for "all hair types." I also don't go to natural hair salons for obvious reasons lol. I just do my own hair and I'm traumatized by going to local salons here lol.
My hair has been ruined, on two occasions by so-called qualified stylists, and decided to embrace my natural hair. I do my own hair, meaning trimming but for a style I now go to a barber as opposed to a hairstylist. Being in the UK I find it impossible to find any creative/innovative hairstylist, let alone someone who is able to colour my hair to my satisfaction. Sad but true.
Really? Here I thought UK had a lot of options. Good for you to take agency for your hair.

Detangling fee at a NATURAL hair salon is crazy, esp at yr length. I feel like a detangling fee should only be for extreme scenarios:heavily matted, long hair, loc comb out, etc
@@MyWildLifeAsNia I honestly can’t believe the prices I’ve seen natural hair stylists charge for their services. Even for my length of hair which is above my shoulders.
Just now finding your channel but oh my goodness your skin is so pretty and clear! Yea I have to limit going to the hair salons too. Adding up the price with the anger of hairstylists and the unprofessional did it for me. I also know how to do crotchet or wear wigs so that helps. Hairstylists aren’t the same and caring like they used to be.

I hadn’t been to an actual salon for over 30 years because of stylist trauma. After giving up heat as a straight natural, I big chopped and started over 2 years ago. After growing my hair out, I decided it was time for a trim. The first time was fine (the owner did my hair). Then… the second visit caused the trauma! The shampoo lady didn’t detangle my hair. She washed, conditioned, rinsed then started blow drying my hair by ripping through my strands with a fine tooth comb attachment, on high heat! As she was ripping and snapping my hair I could see smoke, while she announced to everyone “Wow! This is the softest most fluffy hair I’ve ever felt. It doesn’t feel real!” 😡 I do not have 4c hair. I have 3c/4a, fine strands, cottony texture. I am not mixed and I’m not tender headed. My scalp was sore for 4 days. It was EXPENSIVE and I didn’t even get a style. I was sent on my way with a huge fluff ball on my head. WTH?! Never again. 😤
I too have softer hair and I know what you mean about this! Had a stylist trauma happen to me in Kenya and I left furious. I let the stylist know my grievance and I think that was my aha moment
@@EvieAswiti From my perspective, it seems stylist don’t know how to care for all African hair textures. They do relaxers, braids or weaves. What a shame. Now I wear twists 24/7 and trim my own ends. 😁

Yeah I was a bit shook when that happened. Just handed me the POS machine and I saw that and was like that’s not what I booked??? lol but nonetheless I learned my lesson
I’m getting curious about products that are not marketed to only Black women.
Many that have super long or healthy hair are just using dove or acv and homemade products. & I’ve been struggling and constantly big chopping every 5 years.
It’s time to reconsider a few things.
Once I went haircare agnostic I finally feel one with my hair vs just winging it and being a product junkie when I first went natural.

I go to a traditional salon. I am 42 years old and I've had natural hair at some point through all decades, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and 2020. I've lived in a black-majority country and a white-majority country for 42 years. Not once have I ever been charged a detangling fee for my 4c high-density hair!! These new salons and new Instagram stylists in America are literally exploiting black people now. I've been natural since 2009 and this is the longest I've been natural my entire life because my mom put a kiddie perm in when I was 8/9 and then I had a dry curl perm when I was 11/12. Since 2009, I've been going to the Aveda Salons in the UK which has majority white clients and majority white stylists...It's now cheaper than the black salons/stylists and not once have any of the Aveda stylists damaged my hair. I'll probably go back to a black salon/stylist when I go back to a black-majority country.
Yeah it’s annoying. Bc what is so laborious to detangle my hair for me? I mean it was raking conditioner in my hair so idk what the rationale is to charge me more for. If I had straight hair would it be the same added fee? No. So yes, it’s exploitation.

Yes girl. I am over these salons. Some stylist lowkey be jealous and messing up your hair on purpose too. And a lot of them look down on our natural hair. I’m looking for a stylist that can do curly trims rn bc i don’t trust myself with scissors, but other than that i’m good

I wear wigs or weaves for the ease of it. I like being able to get up and go and it saves more time than wearing my natural hair. I’m a lazy natural and it works for me 😂 Plus I like the versatility of wigs or weaves. I remember when I first became natural the natural RUclipsrs said to not use grease or Blue Magic on your hair. Years later I’m back to using grease and it works for me. It’s important to do what’s best for us as individuals. Great video!

I’m under the dryer trying not to cry because I got my hair cut into a bob and silk press, and it looks like she gave me heat damage. Smh I blow dry my hair once a month and my curls have never been this limp 🥲. Smh I coulda just did my hair myself

How does conditioner seal the cuticle if you wash conditioner out (get it wet again/open the cuticle)
Shampoo has a certain PH to lift the cuticle. Conditioner has a certain PH to close the cuticle after ingredients enter the hair shaft. Hope this helps!
YESSSSSS Go to those white salons. They might not quite know how to do your hair, but they will try, and won't charge you extra for it. LOl.
idk some of them have caught up. It’s not as taboo now since there’s training and education for afro hair and curly hair these days. So yes, def not paying a premium for a basic service anymore at these salons!

Here in Belgium there are Rwandan women of Tutsi descent that wear their ( natural ) hair in a kind of swoop style , with one side a little longer than the other one : i'm told it's a more modern , stylish take on a more traditional haircut. Very sexy. Other Women of African descent are copying it. Like the nail polish , by the way.

If you have ever stood behind the chair and your customer time slot is for 2 hours turns to 3 1/2 because the detangle service or something else the customer/client didn’t mention n now takes an extra hour 1/2
That is time taking away from another customer. Plus it important to ask all the necessary questions about your hair services. It you know your hair is not
Thoroughly detangle. Then make sure you thoroughly Detangle‘s your hair at home Number one the cosmetologist has responsibilities rent,lights,insurance,products,laundry,heating,etc most customers are not aware or care.
So I do thing getting to know your hair is important, but trying to say what a business owner regulate in their business is not warranted is inconsiderate

Most of they stylist now are simply charging too much money for the most basic of services.
I have a fabulous locktician. You need one good locktician that is about natural hair good hands good spirit good energy. Some people have bad energy. Educate your self speak up. A lot of stylists are converting to natural care but not really natural lockticians!

@@EvieAswiti I am actually interested in the ingredients. To see what Ayurvedic ingredients did or not Implement in her haircare product line. I make my own Ayurvedic products so I am just fine. I will not be using CÈCRED hair products.
Not me just visiting a hair salon yesterday for a silk press 🥹. My wallet felt exactly what you mentioned haha. I’m all for learning your own natural hair to save money and also for better care (because some stylist take a comb through your dry hair and I HATE it 🙃)

@@EvieAswiti I don’t even know anymore lol. I got a trim which was necessary, but the more I think of it, the more I could have done it all at home 😂. I thought she did an amazing job but I can’t see myself going to a salon once a month because it’s too pricey.
@PortiaD-vt5ex Yes it can def add up. I told myself nothing sooner than 11-12 weeks for a trim at a salon.
@EvieAswiti its definitely not worth it if the stylist doesn't even know how to comb.
