They wanted to pack everything in-house, so now if you run Angular 10 it won't run software built with Angular 6 and lower, because some components like http, Observables and rx are depreciated and changed with new ones. Nice try, but thanks. Stars on Git show that it is least popular among frontend frameworks and libraries. It has become a mountain of in-house rules, methods, add-ons, almost unmanageable. They obviously never heard of the old adage, simplicity is the king.
The best explanation on Angular and rxJs that I have ever came across. And believe me I have actually watched/read many many of them.

David Domingues map returns an observable obtained by applying the tranformation function to the source observable
