This video is gold!! Thank you so much for going over what to do/don't do on a resume. This definitely provided me with a better understanding on how hiring managers may view my resume and what i should add/change in order to stand out. Also liked how you touched on the importance of talking about lessons learned. I have definitely been guilty of listing responsibilities!

This video was time well spent indeed! I shared it to a non-PM job searcher because it reminded me of the many lessons from my Resume work shops of customizing every resume and selling yourself in the first half of your resume. What was new to me was the Cover letter is to be in 1st person and about 2 paragraphs long. I also appreciated the suggestion of having passion written in the summary at the top versus cold facts. Thank you!

    Dear Jason,
I want to send you a deep word of thanks. Lately I've been feeling very lost and confused about job searching as I am an immigrant from West Africa to the GTA. I am interested in Project Management in the Higher-Education/International Development industry. I started the google PM certificate, I am to finish this summer. I used to mass send my resume to any and all companies with the hopes for a call. It didn't work. I read today that when we face a challenge we must take a step back and see if our challenges can be resolved in another way because all things are figure-out-able, and your video is the explainer I needed. Thank you. You've gained a new subscriber, and your course is in cart as well! Thank you for pushing out such good content. God bless you!

I’m a newbie to the whole employment world, I completed my studies a year ago, I only had 8 months of experience in an account representative role with a project coordination/management job function. With the pandemic going on I’m struggling to look for a job, I sent in applications, did what I shouldn’t have done based on this video, and a lot of employers ignored me or I didn’t have the chance to sell my skill set well.
This is very very helpful to me. I now have a clear understanding of what I should do and what I should not incorporate in my resume. Because I was too pressured into finding a job quickly I completely ignored all the right things, didn’t take a step back to spend time curating my resume, I wasn’t prepared and I carpet bombed employers which was terrible. I’m very thankful that I found this after taking a step back and learn from my mistakes. Great content!

You're so very correct about your observations and thanks for putting it together out here for the professionals. I started with ad type #1 about 5 years back till I started wording and highlighting appropriately for the hiring mgr. Took me over several iterations back then to finally have the one that clicked. Helped me move over 3-4 levels up in these yrs...thanks to a similar approach. At one stage, I recollect literally carpet bombing over 4-500 applications in about 6-8 months till my boss/friend suggested a particular keyword and within weeks of had senior roles coming right away...and within next 6 wks I had the best job of my career so far. One key note you mentioned about customizing the CV for specific job types is so critical. Thanks a bunch!! 👍

Simply why my friend got a job and he said those on the job literally knows nothing. Daft of the theories and principles of the field just because they marketed a false representation on their CV. It's not a marketing job. Just ashamed of hiring managers and the job market today, period. Very informative anyway and deserves a double like. I would give royalty for 2 years if you can rewrite my CV that gets me a job

I have chosen a different approach. I once tried to craft the "perfect" resume and the "perfect" personalized cover letter just to be ignored. I never took it personally because as you say, hiring managers don't have time. That's when I learned how to spam more effectively.

    Hello Jason,
I was just watching your video about breaking in to the PM field. I like your plan B. It seems that it would be good to get into a large company and to get mentored by those already experienced in the field and avoid the many mistakes of trying to make your way alone without a mentor. I liked your video. It was helpful to me as well as the other videos I watched of yours. I watched the one about is PM for you. It helped me to determine that I have the traits for a successful PM. Also the video about focus on outcomes rather than tools and processes was also helpful. I missed the deadline for the pilot course but would like to learn how to take it.

This is seriously a gold mind of a video. Tons of super valuable information that couldn't have come at a better time. I'm currently in the process of revamping my resume, so the info here along with the checklist will be incredibly handy. The information about the cover letter and summary was great. I have always been on the fence about whether or not to include it. Also, the suggestions about not including dates due to agism was insightful. I'm no longer a young 20 year old, so this hit home with me. Granted I'm only 32, but I think it's important for even someone my age. Especially during a career change. Thanks again, Jason!

    • @PMPerspective
      @PMPerspective  6 лет назад

Hey Tom! Thank you so much for the comment. I'm so excited to see that you found this video helpful.
I debated whether or not to include the ageism thing. ...but, I've seen so many of my peers impacted by this lately so I want to protect my audience. At the end of the day, why would it matter when you received your degree? ...and, truthfully, 10 to 15 years of experience should be enough to convince anyone that you're qualified for the job.

I am 48 now and have been a Construction Project Manager for the last 8 years. So far I have not experienced this, but it is something that I am aware of and concerns me for the future. I would suggest two approaches. First, if you went to school in a field closely related to the position you're looking into, focus on learning experiences and how they relate to what they're looking for in an ideal candidate. The great thing about being a PM is that the approach in business is very similar to the approach you'd use resolving school projects. Share difficult experiences and how you were able steer a project towards success, etc. Second, if your eduction doesn't tie into the position/company you're looking at, consider a junior position that can help get your foot in the door. This will give people a chance to get to know you, develop a strong connection and be more willing to give you a shot, even if you don't meet the criteria right out of the gate.
      Hope that helps

I carpet bombed project manager jobs with a bit of NLP in Python to see what would happen. I was actually curious to see if automation with a little virtual intelligence in play could disrupt skilled worker flow (aka, could bots hinder a nations GDP by introducing artificial increased inefficiency to hiring?)
500k jobs scrapped in one month, 28k relevant to my bot, 15k auto resume build and applied, 2k request for interview.
13% success with a single bot configuration in a domain I have no expertise in.
Crap. Guess the answer is yes.

It is easier said than done because when you add those descriptive words, you run the risk of your resume looking superfluous and fluffy, and hiring managers do not like that either. Most hiring managers will not read your resume if they cannot pronounce your name. Prospective employees are the easiest people for them to take out their toxicity on.

Super super long...not sure exactly why I watched this entire thing. For the future, Jason, might be great to follow your own advise and keep things concise. Easily could’ve been half the length. BUT, thanks for making regardless

Jason, thank you for this information.
Will you open the masterclass pilot again at some point?
Also, I am getting a Norton Symantec web attack notification from Azle's link below. Not sure what this is about, but please be aware.

I noticed that you never mentioned Programs or Program Managers under your portfolio. You just work directly from Portfolio to Projects? Meaning that none of your projects are not strategically related to be qualify to group them into a program?

I can not view the checklist online at PM Perspective. Is the website down? I already signed up with my e mail.

I must disagree about personal interests section. At one international company that I worked at, the HR manager declined all resumes without this section and it didn't go to the departments. Personaly I think it was ridiculous

One rogue HR manager doesn't make the advise wrong. But in my experience it depends on the company. If you know the internal company culture and things like community outreach, then you can add it if it has value such as volunteering or personal trainer and such. Just don't list things like stamp collecting or basket weaving.

Thank you for the great videos. Are you still doing any masterclasses? I get a security alert when I click the links above.

Hi, Will having obtaining an M.S. in PM put me at the top for jobs than having the certificate? I have a Master's degree in Urban Planning but seriously PM experience. I am paying off student loans and have not found any free money to help cover the cost of anymore education. I am actively seeking and trying to figure out the the best path to move into a career as a PM. Any advice?
