  • Defunct Games reviews Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story, available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Switch and PC.
    Although it’s missing a few key games, Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story is yet another fantastic video game compilation from Digital Eclipse. It tells the story of a video game rebel who used his quirky personality and eye for addictive games to stay relevant for more than fourty years. This interactive documentary and museum exhibit takes you inside some of his earliest games and shows you the highs and lows of the early days of the games industry. With more than fourty games and tons of extras, Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story is yet another great entry in Digital Eclipse’s Gold Master Series.

    I hope future entries in the series will cover the Oliver Twins. The MacVenture series would be fascinating if enough making of material exists. But most of all an Ultima collection with the lost U8 expansion included would be my pipedream.

    Back in the day I played hoover bovver, attack of the mutant camels, llamatron and more by Jeff. Usually listening to Pink Floyd or Deep Purple and drinking my home brewed beer. Happy days. Great review of what looks like an excellent compilation.

    I’d love to see a Japanese developer featured someday. But yes, early Activision (especially the 2600 stuff) would be a dream come true.

    Pretty cool stuff. Why did they use that pratchett book title "the light fantastic" in there? Just a phrase? Didn't see any game titled that in his history.
    QOTD, I seriously want to see one on Culture Brain after finding out they were a Yakuza front.

      That expression has been around since the 1600s, usually in the form of "trip the light fantastic."

    I'd like them to continue with lesser known heroes of the micro computer era as the likes of Capcom, Konami, Taito etc are covered pretty much yearly. People like Archer Maclean (RIP), Johnathon "Joff" Smith, Manfred Trenz, Companies like Code Masters (a proper one unlike the half arse Evercade one), ID Software before Wolfenstein (Bethesda/Microsoft probably wont allow that), Core Design before Tomb Raider, Team 17 (again one better than the Evercade compilation), System 3 etc etc and so on...basically most that the great RUclipsr Kim Justice has covered only this time we get to play the games through official means and each game emualated individually rather than a play all emulator.

      System 3 would be a great choice, I don't think copyrights would be an issue either as I believe Mark Cale still owns all of the rights. Thalamus would be another choice I would make.

      There are also corners of Capcom, Konami, etc. that have yet to receive much official coverage; there hasn’t been a definitive version of Vampire Saviour with all the characters for example.
      Plus there’s microcomputer stuff outside the U.S./UK, such as Compile, the early Touhou games, etc.

    • @austinreed7343

      Especially because a lot of the microcomputer developers really NEED context and easy-to-access control macros to be enjoyed by most audiences who didn’t grow up with them.

    Does indeed sound like an interesting collection to check out, that's for sure. And with so many games, as long as you enjoy some, it does seem worth it. As for the question, don't know much about stories of early Devs, so that one you mentioned, IT, sure, sounds good to me.😊

    I was only vagurly familiar with this guy, a name I've maybe heard in passing every here or there, but I'm intrigued enough by anyone who likes llamas so much he makes games with them and especially one who's still making games tlday... but I gotta say, even if it is for the sake of a story, ending it with a Jaguar game when he's continued making games since feels weird. Maybe we can still buy those games on their own, and that's why they're not part of the collection?

      From a storytelling perspective, it makes a lot of sense to end with Tempest 2000. It chronicles the highs and lows of the early days, plus having to reinvent himself a couple of times to stay relevant. Aside from the TxK lawsuit I mention in the review (which ended with both sides getting what they wanted and fans getting Tempest 4000), there isn't much in the way of drama and highs/lows after Tempest 2000. If this were a biopic, you would want to go out on a high note. And Tempest 2000 is basically Jeff Minter's version of Queen playing Live Aid at the end of Bohemian Rhapsody. We get a video that kind of recaps where Jeff is today, but it gives the impression that all of the truly interesting stories were from the first 15 or so years of his career.
      Obviously, we're not going to get his newest games. Tempest 4000, for example, is still available for purchase on modern consoles, and Atari just released a VR version of Akka Arrh, so it's unrealistic to expect those in the package. I suspect the argument is that most of his post-Tempest 2000 output is still available in one form or another and didn't need to be preserved, especially compared to the early stuff, which was previously hidden away on C64 cassette tapes. Those are the games that needed to be saved from being lost to time.

    I really have doubts about what Digital Eclipse is doing. It's what M2 did with Sega Ages, where they stick to popular things people likely already own, and obscure older things that only interest those already sold on the concept.
    Way to kill the hype.
    You just can't build a collection with Tempest 2k as the exciting climax when that was already the only part of Atari 50th that still holds up through a modern lens.
    That said, I'd love to see a Midway collection. Or, if we're being unreasonable, any Japanese developer with a good decades long track record.

    • @juststatedtheobvious9633
      @juststatedtheobvious9633 7 месяцев назад

      Note: Midway chosen only because it's been a while, and it'd be cool to have a definitive collection. Not because this is anywhere near ideal.

    • @DefunctGames
      @DefunctGames  7 месяцев назад +3

      As great as Tempest 2000 is, it's not the reason to buy this collection. I'm also strongly disagree with the idea that "they stick to popular things people likely already own and obscure older things that those already sold on the concept." They don't need to sell people on the concept, because this is either your type of thing or it's not. What they are doing is preserving a bunch of games that otherwise would have no home. And they are doing that by telling a story and actually making you invested in these classic games. What's more, the package actually offers context and shows you the process of Minter learning from his mistakes and talking about them. This is made for the same kind of person who collects the Criterion Collection. That won't be for everybody, but what they are doing is important and necessary.
