Kung Fu Panda 4 Review | More Kung Fu, Less Awesome

- Po is back for some more kung fu action with his next movie, Kung Fu Panda 4. In this review, I’ll be taking a look how the Dragon Warrior can do now that he’s in his final days with that title and is going beyond the trilogy. However, are his moves not as strong as what it used to be, or does the 4th film have a reason to exist other than to give us the Tenacious D cover of Hit Me Baby One More Time?

Kung Fu Panda 4 Review | More Kung Fu, Less Awesome

At least Jack Black’s cover of Britney Spear’s Hit me Baby one more time is good
To be honest, Mike Mitchell was not the perfect choice to helm this entry and it should've gone to Joel Crawford. He worked on the last 3 films, and would have given us an amazing comeback. But nope, the studio wanted to play it safe and Mitchell kind of hogged everyone's time more than to support others. Seriously, I feel really sad for Stephanie Stine and how DreamWorks television animation is becoming a dumpster fire in producing newer streaming shows.
Kung Fu Panda 3 deserves more appreciation, it's easily the most underrated of the franchise!
fr
Agreed. Overhated af in my opinion I mean.
it's my favorite of the franchise:)@@DylanLightfootOnwardFan2004
@@EmojiMarbles Kung Fu Panda 2 is still better though
I have to disagree with that. Yeah the villain was amazing but KFP 2 was more emotional than fun and yes I do love emotional parts in movies but I prefer fun and KFP 3 is more fun than emotional.
I will say this. Jack Black singing Hit Me Baby One More Time wasn't on my bingo card for this year.
But honestly it’s the best thing to come out of the movie. It unironically goes so hard.
So close to a 7, but even with Megamind 2, Dreamworks is having a way better year on this channel.
At least kung fu panda 4 ain't no Shrek the third...
Is that good enough for a comparison?
@@Woobuggy848I guess but KFP4 is not much better in my opinion
@@filetofish7688 you've got a point...
After all, the franchise is starting to show cracks around it's edges...
...Since the third one... (I think.)
@@Woobuggy848 Dreamworks never really does their third movies well. Aside from maybe HTTYD3
Lets hope puss in boots 3 will be good.
Fingers crossed.
But hey, at least it's not a live action animation hybrid that this movie was gonna be originally. :\
Glad we don’t need another ugly Sonic design
Wait what?!?
That would’ve ruined my childhood. It would be like the 2019 Sonic movie design all over again.
That would have been a terrible idea, seriously we don't live in that era where hybrid films became the norm during the late 2000s
Yeah there has been a grand total of 1 completely hybrid movie that has ever worked
To me kung fu panda 4 is what everyone thought Toy Story 4 would be
Toy Story 4 although unnecessary was actually pretty good. Not as good as the other 3 but still is like a 9/10 for me. Kung Fu Panda 4 is just bad in almost every way. It’s like a 4/10 for me
@@ZaidenJones-i2sso glad to see I’m not the only one who feels this way.
I adore TS4.
I saw some clips from KFP4 and I can already tell it’s not very good. I’ll be skipping or pretend it ended at 3. At least there Po became more and truly became the dragon warrior:
To me they both equally boring
I honestly prefer this film over Toy Story 4.
& Despicable me 4 too
This movie is basically what the people who hate KFP say KFP is
That’s actually the most real thing I’ve ever read
Thats a accurate description of what DBS is too

Kung Fu panda 4 RATING!
Story : 5/10.
Animation: 10/10.
Characters: 5/10.
Overall: 6/10.
Disappointing downgrade and quite the weakest film of the franchise, but at least it's not that cringy and that bad like last time with trolls band together.
The forth may not be that favourite but at least it was just ok on its own.
This is not megamind 2 guys.
@@StevenJones851Seriously! Have you seen megamind 2 ! 😠😡
@@StevenJones851but look on the bright side.....at least DreamWorks is saving their 3rd film that is the wild robot. There's still hope for the wild robot and the trailer proved itself that the animation itself takes to the whole new level and I was caught off guard of how amazing the wild robot did with it's animation and I really blew me away and almost made me cry. Let's just hope that the wild robot with help out DreamWorks.
Jack Black's song in the end credits rocks :)
Tenacious D’s and Jack Black's cover of Baby One More Time was the best aspect of the movie.
I just hope Kung Fu Panda 5 will solve the problem
If we get a Kung Fu Panda 5 then KFP will become Dreamworks' Toy Story.
Ah yes, the one with the villain that serves as the equivalent of Kevin 11, Aggregor and Osmosians in general (Within the Alien Force and Ultimate Alien canon, that is) from the Ben 10 franchise. Plus Chameleon’s elephant form looks like a creature I did a long time ago, a decade ago, in fact. I call my creature ‘Elegon’. A combination of Elephant and Dragon.
Speaking of the film's animation, this and The Wild Robot are the final two films to be made entirely in-house at Dreamworks Animation.
The chameleon looks like squidward
It's kind funny you said that, because i always thought Gallaxhar, the main antagonist from Monsters vs Aliens looked like Squidward.
MY COMMENT MAY HAVE SOME SPOILERS FROM THE FILM, SO WATCH OUT:
...
When I saw this movie in theaters, I was quite disappointed. While there were some things that I did enjoy, and there were some genuinely funny moments, there was a lot that I really didn't like. I didn't like how some plot elements weren't fleshed out very well, especially the relationship between Zhen and Chameleon, the idea of Po choosing Zhen as the next Dragon Warrior was predictable while watching the film, Shifu, I felt, should've been more involved in the story, especially during the climax since Tai Lung was also involved and could've allowed for some closure on their relationship from the first film, and I especially didn't like how the Furious Five was completely left out from the story. Yeah, they did cameo here and there, but the story felt severely lacking without them. I mean, yeah, Po is a great main character and I do root for him in these films, but the Furious Five were also great characters worth seeing and rooting for, especially after they accepted Po as the Dragon Warrior and their friend. Needless to say, Kung Fu Panda 4 was a disappointment to me, and easily the weakest KFP film in the franchise.
On a side note, Kung Fu Panda 2 is my favorite movie in the franchise too, as well as my personal favorite film from Dreamworks Animation.
The two best things to come out of this movie are the Tenacious D cover of Baby One More Time and the cover of Crazy Train with Chinese Instruments.
At least it’s better than that crappy trolls 3 movie
Trolls 3 was a masterpiece though
I actually went to see this in the theater 2 months ago and i enjoyed it.
Time for Awesomeness! Skadoosh!
“Skadoosh!”
Regardless of anyone else’s thoughts and all behind-the-scenes conflicts aside, I enjoyed this more than the 3rd installment for bringing back some of the magic from the first two ‘Kung Fu Panda’ movies with its balance of action and humor. Even better, it felt refreshing after the third mediocre ‘Trolls’ film and a solid start of Dreamworks Animation’s final in-house productions before being outsourced by other companies in the following year.
This movie is way better than Disney's wish and trolls band together even though I still like Disney swish
6 or 7 out of 10 film 📽️
My boss thought the Tenacious D cover was ridiculous but I loved it
respectively speaking, Kung Fu Panda 4 was Dreamworks answer to those generic DTV Disney sequels from when me and Amanda were classmates (and coming from Universal, the distributor of those endless Land Before Time sequels) really says a lot
Honestly, I prefer 4 over 3, but the whole series is great. I'm interested in seeing Po's journey to become the spiritual leader and Zhen becoming the new Dragon Warrior.
STORY: 6/10
ANIMATION: 10/10
CHARTERERS: 7/10
TOTAL: 8/10
Please review megamind 2 in his series
*This is why I got the art of Kung Fu Panda 4 book to draw the character designs*
I hate to say this but we are going to get a Kung Fu Panda 5 & 6 in the near future, seeing how DreamWorks' plan is to have Kung Fu Panda a six part movie series.
Ngl, I did enjoy watching KFP 4. It had the funny charm that its predecessors had (which I liked a lot), there was some good action scenes, the upgrade of the visual quality was great, and I did enjoy some of the new characters.
However, some aspects such as the Chameleon not having a solid backstory and the Furious Five taking a back seat was a downer. I don’t want to hate on this film like the norm, nor will I. But it’s not as strong as the previous film imo.
Agreed. The Chamelon, Zhen, and Zhen’s relationship with her adoptive family and Po need more fleshing out.
18:34 I still didn’t expect it to get a 6/10 though.
As a fan of the Kung Fu Panda movies
Story 6/10
Animation 10/10
Characters 7/10
Overall 8/10

Animation: 10/10.

Yep
Well wait until someone on patron requests him to review it or if he pulls it out of the animation hat

You are receiving the 3rd SpongeBob movie treatment
And this annoying fox girl doesn’t exist either
Its a shame that this was the last kung fu panda movie that shifu and tai lung actors are in since they are very old.
Could have ended it on a great note, but i guess not.
I wouldn't call this movie terrible, just good in my opinion. Not as good or great as the first three movies, though.
Agreed
I found to be an ok film as well. It sure has a weak plot with some mixed humor and flat characters. At least I had a lot of enjoyment with the animation and humor. It’s films like these that shows why franchises don’t really need a 4th movie anyways. Unless it’s Toy Story 4 of course, that one was great
I thought it was a bit better than Orion And The Dark but I liked both movies.
I agree
Orion and the Dark 8/10
Kung Fu Panda 4 6/10
The Tiger’s Apprentice 5/10
Man.... talk about anticlimatic
I still love these movies
Spoilers (maybe)
I thought it was good but definitely the weakest of the four. I think I have three main problems and I think they even kinda blend together or something and it has to do with the side characters. One: for the most part, I think they kinda suck, Zhen is fine which I’m honestly a bit surprised by since I’ve never been a huge fan of the characters Awkafina plays like Katy in Shang-Chi or Sisu in Raya and the Last Dragon and while I don’t think Zhen was great or anything, compared to most of the other side characters she was alright, aside from her Shifu was also fine but really should’ve had more to do here since Tai Lung was back, the other criminals definitely weren’t interesting which fine they weren’t meant to be big or anything but still, especially those kids, is it me or is there now some trope of having bloodthirsty kids as comedic relief just because of how violent they are, I could swear I’ve seen that at least once or twice before this, and Po’s dads, they were annoying, Ping more so in my eyes, and they literally had no point being there, aside from like one speech they gave Po which I guarantee literally anyone else could’ve done, they literally did nothing. Two: the Furious Five, some of the most essential characters in the last three and they’re not here which I don’t get, I mean even if I didn’t mind Zhen, I do agree it might’ve been better to have Po decide to pass down the Dragon Warrior mantle to Tigress instead. Three: there was no point in the past villains coming back, the villains coming back was exactly what I was afraid would happen here, they were just nostalgia bait, I’m mainly annoyed about this with Tai Lung cause he’s on the poster, he was all over the marketing, he was the only one of the three to get voice lines, and he did nothing in the like 10-20 minutes he was on screen, ok
Is this a movie where it was first considered to be a live-action/animation hybrid? Laughed hard at this concept
It would have been awesome if tai lung and po fought together and chameleon took the kung Fu of oogway...that way we could have seen oogway's Kung fu and also It would have been a great fight....Zhen makes no sense at all...The furious five at the end was so cringe...Those guyz especially tigress is always in mood...Either tai lung or tigress should have been the successor...The movie is not as good as first three but its okay to watch...
When are you going to review Megamind The Doom Syndicate?
That what everyone says is the best kind of sequel right. one that basically does the first story again: phelous 2024
Say what you want about this movie, at least it's not Megamind Vs The Doom Syndicate.
So are you ignoring Megamind 2? I thought you were an animation critic you can’t be this far behind
The reason why the story is weak, is because it was made during the writers strike, so they had to rely on the animation to tell the story, and the reason why the big five didn’t make an appearance, is because the director didn’t want the movie to be overcrowded 🙂
1:55 or the next ice age
at least they didn't go the Ice Age route with Kung Fu Panda
I hope I’ll enjoy it more than most of yous when it releases in Ireland at the end of the month.
Eh
If there’s anything this movie did right, it’s that it at least make me appreciate Kung Fu Pand 3 way more. Despite admittedly being the weakest of the trilogy, it ended Po’s narrative arc really well and still felt like it captured the spirit of the first two movies.
This feels like The Matrix Resurrections or Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, where an unnecessary 4th film comes out well after the trilogy has already been completed and is unabashedly the worst one so far due to how underwhelming and disappointing it is. And with there being talk of this leading to a new trilogy, I can only hope it’d be a major improvement over this, otherwise I’m not checking it out at all.
What I liked about the film:
Po is still Po
Shifu is still Shifu but looks cuter
Zhen is a pretty cool character
Tai Lung is still Tai Lung but more mature and peaceful
This is probably gonna be nobody’s favorite Kung Fu Panda movie. But still a very solid or awesome movie.
I honestly expected Animat to give out this score. KFP4 doesn't sound like a bad movie, but it doesn't sound like a great one either. I pity that we might never see the original director's version before it was shredded by a child-hating hack.
Where is megamind 2 review
I say while the animation is more “detailed,” the ‘attention to detail was lacking to the point of absurdity. If you have to cheap out on Mr. Ping’s Noodle Hat, and not bother to keep Oogway/Shifu’s staff’s continuity properly, don’t even bother.
This can’t be good 😥. I think that this is a sign that the series has overstayed its welcome.

Lord Shen: I DID MY WAITING! THIRTEEN YEARS OF IT! IN THE SPIRIT REALM! 🦚
I got that reference
Okay, EPIC reference to Gary Oldman’s role in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban!
Great referance, but also, this highlights a problem with Shen’s appearance in kung fu panda 4
Shen should of never went to the spirit realm
The spirit realm was for warriors who found inner peace before death, or were sent there directly with techniques like the Wuxi finger hold
Shen died to a cannon, unable to get over his past and shocked that Po could get over his
@@MinisterChicken I’m sorry, but going by the films (I’ll leave wiggle room for a wiki I haven’t read), the spirit realm is just the afterlife. There’s no reason for Shen not to be in the Spirit Realm in terms of established rules (and the place’s name). The problem is why is he being summoned. He wasn’t considered a real master of Kung Fu. That’s what the cannons were for. And Kai should be (assuming the previous film’s finale didn’t mean he stopped existing entirely) should arguably be unknown to everyone if Poe is a complete unknown to everyone in the city. Kai was forgotten by history. How does the Chameleon know who he is?
@@John-fk2ky the wiki was changed right after kung fu panda 4 dropped in order to include Shen, so I’m still calling it a retcon
It’s also helped by the fact that Kai said “I have taken the chi of every master here” and tai lung was on his belt, Shen was not, and I highly doubt he would leave any masters behind before facing oogway again
Recalling a past AniMat moment:
AniMat: Hey! You're going to be in four more movies after this. You will be destined for many things. Better be this one for now.
I guess DreamWorks is following Katzenberg’s wish. But to quote a phrase from another popular franchise, “I’ve got a bad feeling about this.”
For a 4th film in animated franchise, I’m definitely satisfied. Still has the great heart, the awesome animation and creative action scenes we know and love.
I’ll give you the last two, but heart? Give me a break. It COULD have had it, but they literally didn’t give the film enough time either in terms of screentime (could have happily cut Ping and Li out of the film entirely) or in-universe for me to find what they were trying to sell believable.
I really don’t understand what you mean by heart, if corporate meddling and hecking over the people that where working on this movie is heart then I don’t think you understand what actual heart and love is. There could’ve been actual love and passion into this movie like heck there was a different and much better plot but corporate meddling happened and now we have this.
Who else thinks Mat should make a review for the FIRST Kung Fu Panda movie? I’d like to hear what he has to say about the beginning of the franchise.

I agree it was okay film for me as well. It was little disappointing how it turn out because pacing and the story development need some work. However, I still enjoy it despite being the weakest in the franchise. I give the film like a 6.5 out of 10. The score, the song Baby One More Time by Jack Black, and the animation, some of the sequences what really stand out for the entire film.
I'm more it's in the "good but just good" category. 7.5/10 for me.
the first one was great, the second one was fantastic, one of Dreamwork's best films, the third one was alright, but a satisfying ending to a trilogy. This fourth movie was such a disappointment, it was so predictable, the villain was lame, especially with her backstory, and the ending is so frustrating to me
100% agreed. I mean, her motives are so weak and just an excuse for your typical "Take over the world"-Villain. I mean she could've gone through the hard way if no one took her seriously because she's small. And by the way. We have enough small characters in the "Kung Fu Panda" universe who can do kung fu.

I hope it's a 1 or 2/10. We haven't had that kind of review from AniMat in forever it seems
I think the last time he did that was back in 2019
I can understand the controversy behind the absence of the Furious Five. On the one hand, they're iconic characters, but on the other hand, none of them except Tigress had any real character development in the original trilogy. Besides, the Furious Five weren't in Paws of Destiny or The Dragon Knight, either.
If 4's the ultimate conclusion to Po's story, maybe 5 and 6 will be about Zhen instead.
Honestly, as much as I enjoyed the film, a part of me felt like this movie shouldn’t have been made. I get it, DreamWorks wanted to follow Jeffery Katzenberg’s wish of making Kung Fu Panda a six film franchise and I can see some people seeing this as a good thing, heck, my Mom most definitely does that I am going to see it again this weekend because my family loves this franchise, just like I do, but I feel like following Jeffry’s wish is giving me concerns that the next films will might meet the same reputation as the Star Wars Sequel trilogy.
Also, and DreamWorks, I just need to ask you something. WHAT DID YOU DO TO SHIFU?!!! Seriously, you turned one of my favorite characters of the franchise into complete and utter a**hole! I have never felt more betrayed by that!
In my opinion Kung Fu Panda would be totally fine as a trilogy. I don't think that this franchise can endure two more movies. The fourth movie was already weak at the story. I don't see any potential for more because Po is fully developed. Unless you want to make Zhen the new dragon warrior and repeat the whole dragon warrior plot with her.
I think the problem with the fourth film is that not only it’s very formulaic, but it doesn’t take any risks as much as the second film did. Also, I get why The furious five weren’t involved because it’s supposed to show that they aren’t necessarily needed for Po’s journey because it’s shows how much he’s grown and can stand on his own. It’s a fun movie but definitely the weakest of the film. But I’m putting all my hope in Dreamworks with The wild robot.
Plus the fact that plot wise besides Tigress all they really did was fight and get captured in the first 3. And none of them really got a chance to shine or get development here.
I’m going guess it’s because the universal execs and Mike Mitchell is the reason why KFP 4 is more in the safe route, because the execs are pretty much treating Dreamworks like how they treat Illumination
I'll still take this over toy Story 4 any day.
I finally watched the movie

*I went to go see this and it was just okay ✅ at least the animation is a good saving grace*
Even Kung Fu Panda 3 is better
@@bigmacintosh1766 Yeah and Kung Fu Panda 2
No Furious Five? Oh come on
Mr Ping and Li are the best parts of the movie and I will not tolerate this blasphemy towards them
While I enjoyed this movie, I rank it lowest in terms of all four KFP Movies (with 3 being the original lowest). It really needed more time in the oven and my heart goes out for the cast members who fought tooth and nail for things such as the Furious Five making an appearance.
While yeah, 3 takes a more comedic route and we don’t get a huge grasp on the dynamic Master Oogway and General Kai had, it still continues and finishes a plot thread and ties it up in a funny and action packed bow.
Here, you take one look at The Chameleon’s backstory and realize “Huh. No one would teach you Kung Fu because of your size but Shifu is short and he’s a Kung Fu Master!” Like, why not have it so that she was practicing sorcery and no one took her seriously because Kung Fu is all the rage, so she learned shapeshifting to lie and cheat her way into being the ruler of Juniper City by disguising herself as citizens and sowing fear and paranoia and uses the unease of her city to draw in Kung Fu warriors to fight and imprison?
Dang I’d really want to watch that.
It's so annoying how they treat the Dragon warrior like it was an empty title and easy to achieve.
Kung fu panda 1 the furious five trained and worked hard to be chosen for the dragon warrior title. Even Tai Lung.
Oogway picks Po, Kung fu panda 3 explains why Oogway picked Po.
Po in the through out the thre movies proved Po's struggles and experiences aswell as his achievements and stability of his position as dragon warrior.
But now? In kung fu landa 4? XD he can just hand it out to anyone 😂😂 without considering caution.
Kung fu panda 1 = Body
Kung fu panda 2 = internal struggles aka Mind
Kung fu panda 3 = spiritual mastery and connection while also teaching.
Also that
Tai Lung - Sifu
Shen - Po
Kai - Oogway
All of them had connections
Then look at Kung fu panda 4 zero connections
Now all my hopes are in the wild robot now and hopefully universal doesn't screw its marketing just like Ruby Gillman
I wouldn't be surprised if in any subsequent Kung Fu Panda thing in general, we kind of ended up with something a little more existential. Possibly in reference to things like nihilism, entropy and possibly how any knowledge or lessons from times past can either be lost or forgotten, and lead to an endless cycle of people making the same mistakes over and over again.
Hell, it could make for an interesting background for an antagonist; one who has essentially accquired knowledge and experience that far surpassed Po's, possibly even somehow finding ways to cheat death and such, in order to pretty much create what they cosinder to be a paradise, and possibly even bringing up some stuff regarding intentions and integrity and how they clash with any form of talent and such, in the grand scheme of things.
I dunno. I'm just kind of brainstorming ideas here.
I mean, you could probably even have the villain, in a desperate attempt to kind of turn Po to their side, essentially flood his mind with all the knowledge of the world and everything, past, preasent and future, that they had been subjected to and after pretty much experiencing a bit of a catatonic moment, whilst everything is processing in his mind, he actually kind of defies the expectation of the villain who, whilst has more understanding for their plight, ends up looking at it in a somewhat optimistic light.
I even imagine this character, possibly similar to say Kessler from Infamous, kind of not really be all of a physical fighter and be more about the wits and arcane knowledge, as well as possibly having a way to generate warriors of their own to fight in their stead.
