  • Billed as Elvis' "last concert", this double-album (usually) contained the soundtrack of the CBS TV Special plus extra live recordings from the final tour.

Great video Steve...Great little story towards memory lane.. So many years has gone by since ELVIS left us, and yet your love for HIM never fades away. I hope ELVIS knew how many people loved HIM, and still does.. Thank you .

Annie, I think he knew that he was hugely popular, but I don’t think he understood that it went beyond that.

Hi Steve, as always I really enjoy your videos, however this time I especially enjoyed this particular video. It would have to be my favourite of all your videos! Great story about when you first bought this album, you richly painted the image of the situation, your special memory was conveyed perfectly and I was moved mate! Take care Steve. I hope you still have some good weather there before the colder months set in. I certainly miss home, little old England, and all my family there. All the best, from Vak (in Australia). 😎👍

I bought ELVIS IN CONCERT, or rather it was bought for me, for my 13th birthday in 1979. I'm 58 on Tuesday and I still have the same copy, I'm not a collector like yourself, I just have the one copy. Orange label, nothing special, but it has been played to within an inch of its life. As for an official release of the CBS special, I too would love to see it, released on blu ray with some of the extra performances that I found hard to believe were not in the final show, like Trying to Get to You, And I Love You So, the Rapid City It's Now or Never, Unchained Melody, If You Love Me, Fairytale...
If I may, I'd like to mix fantasy with reality here. See, I think the CBS Special was great in places, not so great in others. The edit of See See Rider, where Elvis stopped it in Rapid City, was really obvious and clunky in the Special, but perfectly handled on the album. I think if you fix that, make it a 90 minutes special, add the songs I mentioned above, a few more fans' comments and some of the backstage material from Rapid City, and some of the stuff from Indianapolis airport with Todd Slaughter you got yourself a show. Tart it up to blu ray quality, that thing would fly off the shelves...
Except of course that it won't. Remember, your suggestion that the CBS Special get released through FTD, that could not happen because then they would have to stock it at Graceland, and they won't do that, not as long as Riley Keough is alive...We used to say as long as Lisa is alive, but now she's gone there's no more likelihood. I liked the idea of what they were trying to do with the Special, get a close-up view of being on tour with Elvis, but Colonel Parker, who set the Special up in the first place, then refused access to Elvis for an interview, which he could have done at Rapid City, or even at Graceland. Parker had Joe Esposito there to make sure the cameramen didn't get too close. So they kind of destroyed the point of the special that they wanted! And Elvis wasn't concerned too much about what happened in the Special because it was given to him at too short a notice to do anything about it in terms of his physical shape. Don't forget it was announced and recorded within three weeks. I think Parker set it up after the Louisville, Kentucky incident of May 21, 1977 which Larry Geller always talks about. He did it EITHER as a cash grab before Elvis croaked OR perhaps to shock Elvis into doing something about the condition that Parker found him in. I don't think even Parker expect Elvis to be dead before it was even screened. x

Interesting thoughts. I agree there were some odd editing choices. The special could have been much better presented. I am sure we will get an official release, hopefully without the unnecessary fan comments.

@tcbsince73 oh yes completely agree, even though I no longer have any of the actual albums I had during the time period you're talking about, I have fond memories of each and every one of them. For many of them I can remember the excitement of getting them, where I got them from and that anticipation of putting them on the turntable for the first time

Nice little story. I bought the album early 80s. My impression was, although I knew Elvis was unhealthy, this made his last concert album sad and RCA did the best with the material on it. I like the album, the gatefold cover, the sound, the ambience of the concert.

Elvis didn´t do great shows in 1977. The Elvis in Concert album reflects that. There are some good tracks there, but as an entity it`s not as good as the other live albums from Elvis.
