I recently bought a copy of The Beatles' Story at an antique shop, and what sold me what the original owner left her name and Beatlemania scribblings all over the inside of the foldout. I could visualize her writing "Beatles forever" and "Ringo for president" while listing to the album. I just love it!
I love looking at original LPs with writing on them. I think it would be a pretty cool coffee table book to have pictures of LPs that were written on by their owners.
@@StevtrekMy aunt has a mono Meet The Beatles! with my grandfather’s graffiti on it. The photo of them on the rear has dialogue written on it with marker. It’s pretty funny. I also have a Searchers LP of his with a drawing of Alfred E. Neuman on the cover. He’s quite a character.
It was the thing to do if you were a teen when the Beatles conquered the states..so many people would at least write their name on it…it was such a personal connection to the group..great history👍
Andrew, your foresight and attention to detail is why I am a member and patron of this channel. From a "what does this mean for future releases that we know are in the pipeline" standpoint, this release is definitely a head scratcher. Apple has alternated trying to bury these releases, and whenever they do return to them, seem to miss the mark in some manner. Being a first generation US fan, this was a no-brainer for me. Much like the Macca 45 box, this is as much a time capsule of a period of my life as it is the latest Beatles product. Having been stashing Amazon points for what I thought was going to be the Rubber Soul set, this release became extremely affordable. I'm not a big collector of colored vinyl, but I did also preorder the Target Meet The Beatles. Can't wait for your unboxing video!
I was 7 in '64. My mother, God bless her, bought all the Beatle albums. Playing 'The Beatles Second Album' start to finish, at maximum volume, can not be beat!
I have lived my life in The US. These were the albums that introduced me to The Beatles. I am looking forward to this and also your review video. Thanks.
I was born in 1962 and heard the Beatles on am radio growing up. My family was too poor to buy any extra entertainment items. So, in 1972 a neighbor boy that lived next door to my uncle, was being drafted into the Army for Vietnam. This neighbor gave all of his Capitol Beatles albums to my uncle (Who was not a Beatles fan). My uncle in turn...asked our family (5 boys) if we wanted these albums. We took them ALL! We spun those albums all the time and learned new songs that we never heard on am Radio. I'm definitely going to buy this set!!!
In my case I probably wouldn't go as far as hating the US albums - after all, I do have vinyl and CD copies of all of them. The "purist" tag might be more applicable to me. The Beatles themselves and George Martin never approved these mixes or album configurations. But once every decade or so, Apple is willing to reissue them in a format which is historic, nostalgic, and profitable.
@@alanlinfield8207 I have both an Original Hard Day's Night (US) and an early UK pressing. On my Vacuum Tube (valve) "Control" (Integrated) Amplifier with Vintage NOS tubes, with a Bang & Olufsen Turntable through better than average speakers (so nowhere near high end audiophile) the Parlophone HDN on many of the songs give the sub-conscious reflex action to look up at the person in the room singing, to the point of almost being scary. I have original (in almost near mint condition) US originals, and although nostalgic, never have I had the same experience...memory flashbacks to sixty years ago listening to the record, but nowhere near the unsettling feeling.
Surely the future of any further Capitol sets depends on how this one does. Trashing this one but hoping for 'Yesterday and Today' or another Capitol release in the same sentence is counterproductive.
@@Renshen1957 This is very insightful! Thank you for posting. I've been wondering how the 1964 US mono vinyls would fare in an A/B comparison against the Beatles in Mono vinyls from 2014. I think you just gave us all a sneak preview.
I still have my original albums but they are pretty beat up, albums and covers. As an 8 year old, those albums changed my life forever. It got the US through, especially in the aftermath of President Kennedy's assasination. Beatlemania was awesome! But now I'm 68 and in failing health and I'm faced with getting rid of everything. These first 6 albums shaped my life. I will always be eternally grateful!❤
I still have my original stereo copies of "Meet the Beatles" and "The Beatles Second Album" that my mother bought me back in 1964 and I'm excited to purchase the new mono versions of those lps. The others I'll probably skip for now. The excitement and exuberance that I felt when listening to those two albums back then has never left me. It led me into a career as a music salesperson and later as a radio dj/program director. In my entire life (I'm 65 now) I have seldom gone more than a few months without listening to that early Beatles music. It continues to lift my spirit.
I was raised in the UK but live now in Canada. When building back my collection, I acquired the original Capitol US and Canadian originals and reissues as they were cheaper and easier to find than UK versions. They have their charms, the US Rubber Soul, MMT, and Hey Jude are worthy additions to any collection. And, hearing non-UK album singles within an LP sequence certainly brings a fresh perspective in a broader context. The main benefit I can see for the audophile is that new analogue pressings will be available for the first time in the best part of 60 years. Most of my mono originals were clearly well loved - usually by teenage girls if the names on the covers are anything to go by - and cared for with all the attention one gives to discarded gift wrap on Christmas morning. I do worry about sound quality though. we are essentially looking at several generations down master taps after all the folding down and "Dexterization" even if they are the original Capitol masters. I'll probably pick them up singly, it will save some money and avoid the ghastly Beatles Story. I'll make my own box from cereal packets.
@glennogden6613 Just wondering if you ever acquired the Canada-only LPs, Beatlemania, Twist & Shout or Long Tall Sally? Also very hard to find in good condition, but often better-sounding than their U.S. counterparts due to using U.K. master tapes. Amazingly, they stayed in print well into the 1970s.
@moxievision A very good comment. I have the three, a mix of originals, and reissues. The Twist and Shout cover is one my favourites across all releases, it captures the energy and fun of Beatlemania as it hit the scene. A limited edition Capitol Canada 3LP reissue would be a great box set to have come to think of it.
@@glennogden6613 I'd love to have repressings of the three Canuck LPs, maybe in a box set with a bonus Love Me Do (Ringo version) 7" on the orange/yellow swirl Capitol label, as originally issued in Canada (perhaps in a better-sounding needledrop transfer). Just like original mono U.S. LPs, it's extremely hard to find the Canuck albums in decent shape, I've gone through many copies of each of them to get to versions I consider playable. I'm not sure what other Canada-only oddities exist, apart from the coloured vinyl reissues that came later in the 1970s.
@@glennogden6613 There is a video called "Kevin Reeves on the 2024 US Mono Beatles box set" which shows footage which.. I honestly have no idea where it's from but it could give you a better idea of what source was used (and I'd assume based on the mixes used in the video for the songs will be on the album so there is an example of that) then again I am NOT a tech expert and this video could be useless but it's an interesting watch nonetheless
As a 12 year old who first heard of The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show and had a musical epiphany, heck yes I''m buying this set. Back then I and my two younger sisters couldn't afford albums, but we literally scrounged through roadside ditches to find soda pop bottles with a deposit on them to buy the 7" 45s. I'm looking forward to this.
Being a Brit, I see this as a project for our diehard U.S.A brothers and sisters.. I'll stick with my vinyl box set of the British albums and the cd Capitol albums.I'd have much preferred a blu-ray version of the Let It Be movie or a box set of the remaining British albums with a gorgeous hard back book. This set is for the truly nostalgic fans.
@@robertcoley1103 The mono box sets by Optimal really can't be beat. I accidentally ordered 2 of them and was surprised when two showed up. However, I am spending the money on the 6 individual albums just to find out if Kevin Reeves is a great mastering engineer or ordinary. If I don't like them, I'll give them to my nephew.
DEXTERIZATION! How funny. Andrew, I hope they put these out on cd’s 😅! I saw an ad last week and thought it’s a great idea to have a mono box set of the US albums. I hope folks understand the importance and differences of these recordings…oh, and the fun! Having grown up with these and the stereo versions, it was the hallmark of being a kid in 1964, in the US, and throughout the years of buying their music. We loved having the singles on the Lp’s. I’m glad that Europe and other countries will finally be able to acquire these albums too. Great episode; more wonderful details about these albums. Can’t wait til the unboxing! Again thanks and cheers! See ya next time!
They've released three U.S. albums CD sets in the past 20 years. I imagine if this was coming to CD it would have been announced at the same tie as the vinyl editions.
I can see why John especially, didn't like Dexter. When the groups contract with Capitol ended in 1966, The Beatles made it a clause of their renewed contract that all future albums in the US would be released in-line with UK releases. Also Dave Dexter Jnr would never get his hands on any Beatles material again.
You were definitely ahead of the curve when you did your video last year! I will be getting this box since I do already have the Capitol albums in mono some are not in the greatest shape as they are over 60 years old so it’s nice to have an upgrade. I think it’s great that the Capitol albums will be getting some attention and having them in mono is a bonus. It’s good to know that Bruce Spizer is involved with this project as he is a premier expert in this area. Thanks so much for sharing this Andrew!
Thanks again Andrew. I love all you Beatles videos. I have ordered the box set from the UK but thanks for alerting me to the blue vinyl Meet the Beatles. I have ordered this from JPC as they will ship to Australia.
In 1974, I was a budding 13 year old Beatlemaniac. I remember cobbling these US LPs with my allowance money, and sometimes getting a couple of freebie LPs from a neighbor. Some of these were mono, but mostly stereo. "The Beatles Story" is the only one I never bough, but checked it out from my local library. I do remember being excited at hearing the opening of "Twist and Shout", as at that time, it was the only way you could hear any "live"Beatles. I'll pass on this set as I found the UK mono box the definitive way to hear these LPs.
It was my wish 1 year ago and now my order will be made first thing tomorrow morning. I live in Switzerland and in Zero Zero, my favorite second hand vinyl shop, there are no shortage of second hand Beatles US albums as well as German, Italian and UK pressings. The Capitol albums mostly look in bad shape so I have never bothered buying them. I will be looking forward to this boxset very much.
You sold me Andrew on this new box set! This looks like a great Christmas gift from The Beatles! I love anything Beatles Meet The Beatles will be on blue vinyl sold separately! Beatlemania in 2024 still strong 60 years later! Im all in on this box set! Thanks Andrew keeping us informed!
"Mocked by purists" is certainly true - sometimes it is overzealous and over the top! Many countries had unique track listings on their Beatles LPs, and I'll wager the US versions outsold them all. I grew up in America, born in 1969. I got my first copy of Meet the Beatles in 1979, with Second Album following for Christmas that year. They were the most exciting things I'd ever heard...still are, in fact!
It's not just purists. Being British, I originally had all the UK releases on LP format plus Rock N Roll Music. In 1999 I bought the Yellow Submarine CD which convinced me to buy the entire UK album releases in CD format when they were released in 2009. I also bought Past Masters I & II and John Lennon's Image Movie soundtrack. I would have bought them sooner but I was waiting for the upgrade of the CDs to match the same quality as that 1999 release. I always felt that Capitol butchered the Beatles albums. In the UK everything to do with the group is viewed as a high-standard of quality. The US releases just seemed like a cash-grab to me. I'm also surprised that Capitol haven't included the Paul solo album that Dexter had been planning to push from 1965.
@@KebabMusicLtd OK, all fair points, we have different life experiences. I had all the UK versions from the time I was 12 so I knew both US and UK (as well as many other unique worldwide comps). I re-bought everything on CD in 2009 as well. "Mocked by purists" is a quote from the video and it resonates with me because I grew up with the misguided revisionist attitude that the US releases were garbage. They're not, they are all Beatles music the last I checked. Anyway, I disagree that they were butchered, and if they were a cash grab they were very successful! Much cash was grabbed. Including mine! And I loved every note.
@@KebabMusicLtd There's a website that lists all the Capitol records and what was used for the stereo and mono mixes. There are some US-exclusives that I think are worth having, I own both. To this day I find the US Rubber Soul version superior in that the songs fit together in a folk-rock motif amazingly well. Yesterday...And Today has always been my favorite Beatles album growing up and still, and I have a couple '66 mono pressings that are absolutely fantastic that stand toe-to-toe with any UK record I have. The issue with Capitol in the day is simply that they just wanted to press and ship as many records as possible, so the stampers were allowed to wear down more and create inferior pressings. But I find the music itself on a good pressing to be as enjoyable to any other releases.
Part of the problem is the infamous baggage that comes with how the Capitol albums got put together, along with their refusal standardise releases long after everybody else had until the Beatles' new contract finally forced them to.
I find it hard to believe that a very expensive mono box set like this one will be a big seller. I would never pay that much money for content that I already have in my collection.
The mono version of Something New by the Beatles has several differences from the original release, including: Alternative mixes The mono version includes different mixes for "Any Time At All", "I'll Cry Instead", "When I Get Home", and "If I Fell". Missing verse The mono version of "I'll Cry Instead" includes the "missing" third verse. Vocal passages The mono version of "When I Get Home" has a different vocal passage during the bridge. Introductory vocal The mono version of "If I Fell" includes Lennon's non-double-tracked introductory vocal. Vocal The mono version of "And I Love Her" includes McCartney's non-double-tracked vocal.
The Second Album and '65 both have some US-exclusive mono mixes as well, including "Long Tall Sally", "You Can't Do That", "I'll be Back" and "I Feel Fine" and "She's a Woman".
Fantastic Andrew! I remember your video from last year well, you really are a voice for us Beatles fans and we love you for it! Thanks as always for sharing… 👍
I waited days for Andrew's take on this! I've been a Beatles fan since 1980, when I was ten. I'm going to buy these albums individually, as I've waited for them since the release of the British mono albums in 2014.
Glad the reception of these are a lot better here than other places on RUclips. As a first generation fan I can’t wait and don’t understand the hate I’ve seen elsewhere.
These are the albums that I remember. I am really happy for this. Hopefully we get the other albums after like Beatles 65’ or Yesterday and Today. Those American albums rock!!
If apple decides to make a box set of the later capitol albums or release them on vinyl, it would be really cool if they made a peelable butcher cover (with a sticker)!
I'm a 45 year old American and grew up listening to my Father and Uncle play Beatles songs on guitar. I actually thought they wrote them until I heard the records. Haha. I've been a fan ever since I could talk. I have cassette recordings of me singing along with them playing in the kitchen back in 1983. I just scored an absolute mint original US mono pressing of Rubber Soul at a local shop for only $75. It looks unplayed and has no ring wear. And recently got a mint original US stereo Sgt. Pepper off Ebay for only $30. The jacket only has a 1 inch split on the top seam, very light wear on the back but it is missing the original multi color sleeve. The LP also looks unplayed. I am looking forward to this new box set. I'm not sure if I'll buy the set or buy them individually. Great video once again.
The Beatles made their US debut when I was in 4th grade. I hadn't really listened much to the radio before then and I was really surprised when I started hearing the original versions of the Motown songs they covered. Every generation has to catch up on the history of what went before.
75?! I got mine in similar shape (NM) on Discogs for like 20 bucks, just didn't have the inner sleeve. How's your copy sound? Mine might be fake, given it sounds rather tinny and lifeless, like phone speakers. It's also important to note that Capitol from 1965-1967 or so was not the greatest source of quality pop records, they pressed them fast with no care so they have a higher intrinsic noise (see: original copies of Pet Sounds).
Funnily enough, when I went to England for the first time (Manchester/Liverpool/Wigan/Nottingham), I couldn’t find a single UK original for sale, but I saw many US originals
Thanks Andrew. You're correct! Meet the Beatles was a game changer in the States when it came out. I still remember buying it in my local variety store! Also, I always loved Beatles '65, the cover art was memorable and I recall bugging my parents to make sure they bought a copy for me at Christmas. I also bugged them for the 1st edition of In His Own Write, having already read the whole book in the little gift shop in my town.
I think part of the problem was how much reverb a lot of radio stations used in those days and those AM stations would be mono. So kids here would be used to a ton of reverb on their hit records. This was a ton of information in this video and Andrew was spot on. Great video.
I bought 5 records of this set individually (instead of the box set) on The Beatles Official Store. They charged $8 per record for shipping - total of $40 for 5 records - which is crazy and outrageous. It really pissed me off!
it's a never ending thing this story of the box sets, reissues, remasters and so on. EMI should reprint the original mono cuts with the same machines used at the time. That is what every Beatle fan of today should aim to have.
I always wondered why She's A Woman sounded so thin when I heard the UK album version on CD. I was used to the Dave Dexter US version. Thanks for solving this mystery for me. Now, can you clear up the 2 false starts on I'm Looking Through You that disappeared when I bought the CD? Thanks.
I would so look forward to a Capitol "Rubber Soul" reissue in mono. For me, it's the only album Capitol got right in terms of sequencing and cohesion overall. But I'm glad these '64 U.S.albums are going to be available individually. "Meet The Beatles" is definitely a milestone here in the States.
Yes! I much prefer the Capitol release of Rubber Soul over the UK release, that's the one thing Dexter got totally right, which is surprising. The track listing for the Capitol version is like art, as the songs all work well together as a folk-rock concept. Plus the fake start on the stereo "I'm looking through You" is kinda cool, too.
Sorry but the cd version of the capital box 1 & 2 are fine. They are mono and stereo, what I would like to see is the original albums remixes and fixed with the Dave Dexter treatment. She loves you is a great example, the edit drop outs were fixed and finally there is a stereo version. Keep in mind, growing up in the USA these are the mixes we’re most familiar with.
I think this proves once and for all that you need to be on Apple’s pay roll ASAP. I also love the retro touches you put in the videos. The Dave Dexter intro was great. I will be buying the box as my 50 year old stereo US albums could use an upgrade. And while I have a very happy nostalgic feeling for The Beatles Story, I don’t need another copy and feel a little ripped off at the difference in price between the individual albums total and box set price even though there are some deals. But I’m a sucker for box sets so I’ll pay. I do hope they get around to all the album deluxe sets eventually. I’ll be looking forward to your in depth review later in the year.
You should count yourself lucky. All the LPs in this set in the UK are much more expensive than in the US. It means the box set in the UK is not massively different compared to buying the individual albums but still much more than in America. I did read somewhere that the US records are subject to a 6% or maybe 8% tax as they are classified as collectables so maybe that's why the American albums appear to be so much cheaper. As a Brit I find this very confusing as all our products have tax included so the price you pay is the price on the shelf.
@@ianz9916 that doesn’t sound fair. Maybe it’s payback for the fact that we had to buy all those extra chopped up early albums to get the same amount of music. 😉
I am preordering that box. I live in the states, never bought any of the Capitol records. I always ended up getting the British versions. This will be very welcome to my collection.
Excellent information Andrew. If people are going to gritch about the price, they should consider this. The original release price of those mono press albums in 1964 was $2.98 ($3.98 stereo) USD each for the single albums and $5.98 ($7.98 for stereo) USD for the double "The Beatles Story". Adjusting for inflation this equates to $238.60 ($318.60 stereo) USD for the set. At $299.98 it is a premium over the original prices but the cost is inconsequential. These are not being stamped out at lightening speed with near little care at either the Scranton, PA or Los Angeles, CA Capitol pressing plants. They are careful re-masters, pressed on thicker and possibly virgin vinyl, include the tape info on the liner notes and, although no book, do co come in a handsome box to go with the other box sets. While certainly not for everyone, they are a nice addition to the Beatlemaniac's collection. Being from the US, I had some of these Capitol mono albums I salvaged from the rubbish bin in the early 1970s. Nobody wanted them in their condition and certainly not in un-holy mono! It will be nice to finally hear clean version of them.
I bought stereo versions of these albums on the purple Capitol label back in 1982. I used them to make cassettes of the British version track listings because I did not own the British albums until 1983 or 1984. Andrew, I make contact you somewhere down the line to see if you are interested in purchasing them. They’re in perfect condition.
A couple of years ago I was digging through 3 large piles of records. Like hundreds of records per pile. At almost the very bottom of the third pile was a mono copy of Meet the Beatles on VG+ condition. Paid $1 if I remember right.
I’m a millennial and a weirdo. I have all the OG UK mono, 2014 mono and interesting varieties of UK, German and Dutch version of the stereo mixes (you’ve seen my list!). I have the capitol vol 1 & 2 on CD and I really enjoyed it. I thought that was good enough but recently I’ve been toying around with the idea of purchasing the US albums (typical symptom of enjoying the Beatles way too much). By the way, I lived in the US for the last 33 out of 41 years of my life, which makes this affair really funny. I feel like I’m the only Beatles fan living in US who doesn’t own a single US pressing. Anyways, based on everything I read I was told to avoid 60s and 70s pressings as they’re horrible in sound quality. And then out of nowhere the announcement for this box set drops. A lot of people are crying “cash grab!” But I can’t be more happier. This is perfect for me! …..but $120 for that non music album and the box??? Dude…. They’re going to do this again for stereo, aren’t they?? Edit: I lied. I do own few US pressings. Not as expensive as Beatles in Mono but still very pricey….. and it doesn’t sound that great either. Yes, I’m talking about the MFSL box set. It is pressed in Japan but it’s produced by US so I suppose it counts. The vinyl is beautiful and all the albums sound unique and interesting…. But sound wise, I prefer it the least amongst my collection.
Yeah, the premium for the box is the cash grab part. I'm just going to buy the 5 I want and sit tight for half the price. I have all the original Capitol pressings anyway.
Fascinating Andrew, thank you. I found a near mint copy of Meet the Beatles in mono. I bought it for collector purpose and put it in a record frame to hang in my man cave. But first, I gave it a spin. I happily switched to my mono cartridge and cracked a beer and prepared for great sound. Boy was I disappointed! It sounds like DIRT! Interesting that its simply a fold down of the stereo mix. That explains it! Since I already have UK stereo and mono copies of their discography, I won’t need this set. I’m with the masses, disappointed that it isn’t Rubber Soul this year. A good mono press without the distortion on “Michelle” is the only Beatle album on my want list now.
Yeah, only I Want to Hold Your Hand and This Boy were true mono mixes, the others were fold-downs. The stereo pressings were probably better. I will say that just because a record is in good condition doesn't mean the sound is good, it just depends on the pressing, and Capitol ran their stampers far longer than they should in the 60s. They didn't care because the customers were mostly kids playing on cheap mono record players.
Honestly, for those who may not want to spend the money on the entire set, The Beatles Story is a bland double album that contains only tiny snippets of interviews and songs interspersed with condescending 'adult' chatter from people too old to appreciate the group and their impact. One of the narrators is LA deejay Roger Christian who, among other projects, co-wrote several Beach Boys and Jan and Dean Hot Rod songs as lyricist. For those who find the box set out of reach of their wallets, you won't be missing much if you don't have this album. I bought my copy over 50 years ago and I think I've played it once.
Agreed, I'm going to buy 5 of the 6 and be happy spending half the cost of the box. I have a fairly large Beatles collection and that record is not one of them. Years ago I bought it just to have it and listened to it once. I had to re-collect everything years later (and more), but I've felt no pressing need to have that one. It really doesn't justify the $120 premium at all.
Good stuff. If I'm not mistaken the Beatles were never happy with how chopped up those releases were, thus the Butcher cover. Hoping that the mastering is a revelation on these new releases
I pre-ordered this box set because I don't own most of the versions on this box set. I own Meet The Beatles and A Hard Day's Night. They belonged to my mom who purchased them in 64 and I regularly play Meet the Beatles at least once a week for about 5 years now. I love it. It also makes me feel close to my mom who's passed away. I wish she was alive for obvious reasons but I believe she would have loved this release!
I was surprised to hear the news. These were the first records I ever held in my hands. I must have been 15 or so, can’t remember. For the past decade, I feared that these fun but flawed records would be abandoned like the Collection of Beatles Oldies. Great video as always.
$US120 extra for The Beatles Story (I've played that once in the last 45 years!) and some cardboard......$29.98 x 6 is definitely the way to go for these!
As usual, Excellent episode, Andrew! I have all my mid-70s Capitol Beatles albums so I’m good. I’m happy for those who are looking forward to this release, though. - Roger
Nice video very informative. I’ve been waiting for the vinyl since 2014 when the us albums box was released.Hopefully we get the Capitol 65 and 66 releases and Hey Jude. I want an official butcher cover please 😊What I dreamed of is the post 1970 releases for packaging purposes. The one I love is the Love Songs Album! Also the Ep Box set😁 Take care!
@@Parlogram i noticed the box has the same color and design as The Singles Collection Box Set. Hopefully we get a E.P Box Set. Will probably get Rubber Soul next year for its 60th anniversary.
Hey Andrew, as a 13 year old this interests me a lot! Magical Mystery Tour is the only Capitol LP in the core catalogue and it’s time some albums joined it!
Thanks Andrew, another enlightening video. So another year and still no remix of Rubber Soul or any other pre 65 UK album, does anyone out there have any inside gossip on what is going on? Has Giles Martin taken a (well deserved) break from remixing Beatle albums??
I grew up with the originals when they were newly released. They were all bought in mono up to and including Sgt Pepper. I currently listen to them having digitized them at hi-rez many years ago. I was gifted the 2004 Capitol Albums CD set when it was released, and enjoy listening to them as well. I'll be fine without this new release, but I'm glad it will be available to new fans.
As a 68 yr young Beatle fan ill be all over the single album format buying all but" story" and Early Beatles so for $150 ill have a chance to relive that wonderful time in 64 and have brand new copys of my fav period of the Beatles and wont have to hunt them down individually hoping to get mintcopys! Ive already pre ordered on Amazon so the waiting begins and like most kids that grew up in the 60s we were just glad to own these and have never worried about " dexterization or any of that " audiophile crap! They sound great to most of us and just holding these in my hands again 60 yrs later is all i need!
Andrew your informative video contained an image of the tape boxes, and the EQ adjustments for 4 frequencies for each song. It'd be great to know what those frequencies are. Me, as a southern hemispherer, growing up with UK editions, I'm waiting to get the final instalment in the excellent CD Capitol albums (Volume 3), with the correct (US) stereo mixes on Yesterday and Today. (The 2014 CD has only some of them). as well as the all-analogue Stereo UK albums box set. Dreaming? Growing Old before that happens? Maybe.
Whilst I’m not willing to drop €350 on this vinyl set, I would like to hear these versions. If Apple could now release an updated CD set I’d definitely buy it. I’m sure I’m not alone.
Ah Andrew or should I call you Nostradamus lol, nice job. None of these albums are ones I would bother to get but its nice to see them released in mono, I know a lot of people want these. I still want Rubber Soul and the earlier albums so fingers crossed. Great work as usual, cheers Tim
Excellent video, Andrew. Oh what can I say, I grew up with these Lps. I must be the only one in the planet who was disappointed to listen to the original Rubber Soul. The US version was Gold. And Yesterday and Today... oh these USA compilations are fine fine fine. Thank you, Andrew.
@@antoniodalfonso This year I acquired 2 original mono pressings of Yesterday and Today, which is literally my fav Beatles album. The vinyl is quiet and the sound is LOUD, exactly how I like my records. It tells me Capitol was perfectly capable of producing very fine records. I have some of the Beatles vinyl people extol, but to me, this album is the prize of my collection (even if they aren't Butcher copies). The mono mix of Day Tripper remains for me the best way to listen to that song.
Thanks for getting this out so quickly to tell us what's up! I **Just** bought the US albums CD box set this summer! So many people complained about the mixes used, but I was buying physical Beatles albums for the first time in years, I wanted the best, current mixes, not fold-downs and false-stereo, etc. I already knew and loved Meet The Beatles and Something New, my introduction to earlier Beatles songs beyond the Red compliation and Live at BBC. I got the CD box set in part to see if any of the other pre-Rubber Soul US albums held up like Meet The Beatles and Something New. The short answer is Yes - just The Beatles Second Album. And Beatles '65 is a close runner-up. I planned on getting decent vinyl copies of Meet the Beatels and Something New anyway one day, was intrested in Second Album. But that's it. The box price is prohibitive. As much as i'd love to have the whole box set, I don't need it, shouldn't really be spending the money on it, and it's far from a good deal. I may just get the two or three records I want, and leave it at that. The box price is prohibitive.
I already sprung for the pre order. These were the album versions I remember when I was twelve yrs old.The copies I had are long gone so I'm looking forward to reliving those times when November comes. Not for everyone I guess...but Im excited.
THANK YOU ANDREW FOR THE VIDEO .VERY GOOD!. I'M SO GLAD THAT THOSE ALBUMS COME IN OUT ,BUT SOMETHING BOTHERS ME , WHERE MISERY , THERE'S A PLACE AND FROM ME TO YOU WILL FIT ?
Andrew....as an American, we thank you for giving these albums a fair shake. They were a VERY important part of our American childhood...be their quality be bad, good, or indifferent.
Thanks for putting a positive spin on this release, Andrew! For me, I think the Hard Day’s Night album would be worth buying and perhaps one or two other titles!
I have all of these on the original Capitol rainbow labels. My order cousin collected some and gave them to me and I bought the others used. This is the way I grew up listening to this music I didn't experience the UK albums until they came out on CD
Nice 1 andrew can't wait for it. Rubber soul 60 next year so it's probably held back for that. I'd love to see the rsd wee record player video nearly went for it but the price was mental 😅
I find this box set cool to look at and as much as I'm also glad that these will be finally available again after 56 years... they're the only positive thoughts I have... and having to pay around $60 each for The Beatles Story (easily a throw away LP) AND the book (which, on the other hand, makes sense... kind of) that's a huge turnoff for me. I'll stick with my 2004 set (sealed) and the 2014 CDs.
It’s so refreshing to hear a way more realistic view on this release with (seemingly) broadcasters both sides of the pond already throwing their toys out of the pram because for some reason Apple owe them a “Rubber Soul” box set full of digital delight and aglow with AI. The most important thing is to remember the historical importance of these records as you do. Now our criteria for collecting it’s never going to be quite the same but it’s a shame that many collectors don’t see that this is something well worth let me say that again well worth, collecting. In fact, I’ll wages in five years when these have long since sold out and they’re going for big bucks on eBay many will be kicking themselves for not buying it. so bring it on, pristine mono of Capitol albums what’s not to like? I just hope they keep the series going this time because the real treasures for me start arriving in 1965. There aren’t many people who aren’t Beatles fans who can say they have an actual for real alternative universe in their lives. I already have these albums, I’m looking forward to a brand-new set. Given a choice between an all analog US mono box set and a box of digitally altered stereo remixes then I’ll go for this gladly.
I know right?! I would hope they keep going at least to Sgt. Pepper and MMT so we can get a mono copy, since the 2014 versions are unobtainable. I know the US copy of Sgt Pepper would be missing the runout groove but it’s better than nothing.
I'm looking forward to 10:45 the Stereo Capitol Records Rubber Soul. I grew up with the false start on I'm Looking through you. I still think the Capitol Records Rubber Soul is a great Album enjoy the track listening
This is interestintg and I have the mono box set in CD and LP format. I would rather have an option at the stereo American LPs, because that is where the crazy fun mixes are. Although, I am sure that there are some interesting ones in mono. One potential problem is that when the American LPs where issued on CD a few years back, they simply used the UK versions on all of it. They may have taken the trouble to curate a few of the songs with the Dexter mixes that are famous among us Beatles Nerds.

I think this was thanks to you, Andrew. Great job! Personally I don't like the sound of US albums, but I think this is a UNIQUE opportunity to have these albums in pristine quality. And, at least for me, the best thing is that they will be analogue sources and replicas of the originals. I hope soon there will be a second part with the rest of the US albums. Thank you so much, Andrew!!!! Pd.: You need ask, again, for the Blue stereo box set reissue or the white mono box set reissue (just an idea).
Well it’s not the Rubber Soul box set, or even your suggested 1967/1968 era box set but as an American born in 1990 I grew up listening to my parents cd of (ironically Rubber Soul) and after noticing me getting hooked, I would get a cd for holidays/birthdays/my own money till I had all the cds/anthologies. But I do remember as a kid seeing a rubber soul vinyl at my grandparents house and my dad said that was his as a kid and we brought it home and taught me how to put the needle in the header and let it play, I was surprised to not hear Drive My Car and that was my first experience with a capitol release. I’ve since bought a Yesterday…and Today cause I like that tracklist and I can see myself getting a copy of Beatles ‘65 when these come out. But not the whole set. I bought the US albums box set and then regretted it when I saw your video saying it wasn’t true captiol mixes and wished I’d gotten the 2004 ones. Oh well. Anyway sorry for the long comment, in short, I’ll wait for year’s set, which I bet will be Rubber Soul as it turns 60 next year. Cheers, Andrew!
As a first-generation Beatles fan I am extremely happy for this release. I have all the original mono pressings but they have been very well played and enjoyed. It's time for a refresh. I opted for the box set and it is a bit pricey but dammit! It's The Beatles so I'm all in. Thanks Andrew.
I wasn't going to get this. But, I found the LP set for just over $300 CAD total. For that price, I'm in! Mainly just for the nostalgia. I grew up with these.
@jameswilson7084 I'm in Canada as well and want the box set, but the uMusic Canada price of $529 CDN is highway robbery. May I ask where you ordered yours from?
As always, a great video, Andrew. I purchased the 2014 reissues on CD wrongly thinking they were the original albums. However, whilst the stereo halves of the album were the 2009 remasters, the mono halves of the CDs sounded suspiciously like some of my original vinyl copies. Was this the case as I feel fine sounds dreadful and I'll cry instead has the repeated verse?
Love your content! Any thoughts on who will remaster these? No mention of half-speed so maybe it won’t be Miles Showell. Possibly Shawn McGee if using Abbey Road as he did the Revolver Mono in that boxset.
Andrew - i am huge fan of your channel but I am a bit shocked you have haven't approached the following topics on the Beatles- A complete video of the historic visit of The fab 4 to Japan and Budokan shows and all the records and the trinkets for collectors- nothing on YT secondly the amazing publication called The Beatles domestic publication collection 1964 to 1996- the true bible (Japan) and thirdly the publication you introduced and said you you would do a a video but nothing has happened Paul McCartney tug of war - around the world- Can you consider these? also the historic Budokan concert of Paul McCartney in 2015- cheers!
Andrew: Once again, a superb video. Like most Americans who were teen age (or pre-teen) in 1964, I grew up with these horribly inferior releases. I didn't understand how bad they were until I purchased my first UK copy in circa 1972. From there, I started gobbling up as many Parlophone, Odeon and Japanese pressings I could get my hands on. Despite all the hype over various incarnations on vinyl and CD, I still hold that the original UK pressings are the best sonically. I understand that the grass is always greener, and the novelty factor of owning Capitol releases may be very enticing to UK or Europe based fans. I will look forward to your review. But I'm one serious US fan who is very skeptical of this project. I say, bring the Shea Stadium show back to life, as well as a complete re-work of Rubber Soul. Keep up the great work!!
Wikipedia got something right for a change under Dave Dexter, Jr. "In addition, Dexter rejected the following British EMI artists on behalf of Capitol in 1963 and 1964: Parlophone's the Hollies and Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, HMV's the Swinging Blue Jeans and Manfred Mann, and Columbia's Gerry and the Pacemakers, the Animals, the Yardbirds, Herman's Hermits and the Dave Clark Five, all of whom had some U.S. success on other labels beginning in 1964.[8] In a memo dated Feb. 20, 1964 to Capitol Records head Alan W. Livingston, Dexter viewed most of these artists as unsuccessful, praising only Freddie and the Dreamers, whom he signed to Capitol.[8]" So Dave Dexter was consistent, consistently wrong. To quote my grandmother, "The only taste he has in his mouth".
Great video Andrew! You really nailed the target market for these, and im glad they are selling them individually. I’m a 40 year old American and own all the American albums, but half are poor quality, so maybe I’ll pick up a new copy of the ones that aren’t great. The additional $150 for the Beatles story and book seems a bit steep, but I’ll get a couple of the individual albums.
Thanks Pete! I'm looking forwad to the unboxing too!
Thanks.
Same! I know they’re not perfect in many ways but they’re how I experienced the Beatles until the first CDs came out in the ‘80s.
I'm definitely going to buy this set!!!
wonder what happened to that poor draftee...and so close to the end of that sad war
A lot of youtubers are really hating on these albums and this set. Andrew is one of the few who is giving it a fair shake. Great work as always.
Yeah, I don't dig their negative attitude. This set looks like a lot of fun!
" I'll make my own box from cereal packets." LOL, a very good one.
Still a must own
@@robertcoley1103 The mono box sets by Optimal really can't be beat. I accidentally ordered 2 of them and was surprised when two showed up.
However, I am spending the money on the 6 individual albums just to find out if Kevin Reeves is a great mastering engineer or ordinary. If I don't like them, I'll give them to my nephew.
@@paulreckamp7502 really I could care less about The Beatles Story
@@RockinEd totally agree.
Thankx from the USA.. Andrew, You're The Man !
Glad you enjoyed it, Brian but I think these are going to be vinyl only releases.
@@Parlogram I’m sure you’re right.
@@KebabMusicLtd Dexter was out after Rubber Soul.
I have The Capitol Albums vol 1&2, that's enough for me .
Apple should add a third volume for the remaining US albums.
A great video, thank you Andrew!! I have the 2004 CD boxes which is awesome. I look forward to the next videos!
Thanks Andrew. Excellent as always. Now we can look forward to your assessment of the Capitol USA box when you have a set to open and play.
Hope you enjoy it!
I wonder if the UK Parlophone versions were sold in most countries back then? I know they were sold in Australia.
The mono version of Something New by the Beatles has several differences from the original release, including:
Alternative mixes
The mono version includes different mixes for "Any Time At All", "I'll Cry Instead", "When I Get Home", and "If I Fell".
Missing verse
The mono version of "I'll Cry Instead" includes the "missing" third verse.
Vocal passages
The mono version of "When I Get Home" has a different vocal passage during the bridge.
Introductory vocal
The mono version of "If I Fell" includes Lennon's non-double-tracked introductory vocal.
Vocal
The mono version of "And I Love Her" includes McCartney's non-double-tracked vocal.
What about money on the 2nd album, is it different, also we'll the new mono lps have the same rainbow label as the original capital label.
Thanks Brian!
I waited days for Andrew's take on this! I've been a Beatles fan since 1980, when I was ten. I'm going to buy these albums individually, as I've waited for them since the release of the British mono albums in 2014.
Thanks Andrew for laying it out for us. It can be frustrating being a Beatles fanatic!
Andrew, of course your video is really good and interesting!
Glad the reception of these are a lot better here than other places on RUclips. As a first generation fan I can’t wait and don’t understand the hate I’ve seen elsewhere.
This was my first exposure to this channel. Excellent video. All videos should be this good. Another new subscriber. Thank you.

Cheers Andrew, this was the video I've been waiting for since the announcement. 👌
Their motto could be "Stand and Deliver" at that price point! Thanks for the good info Andrew.
Andrew. Fantastic information. Thank you. I always appreciate your content.
I think it’s kool. Any all analog release is a win.
I bought 5 records of this set individually (instead of the box set) on The Beatles Official Store. They charged $8 per record for shipping - total of $40 for 5 records - which is crazy and outrageous. It really pissed me off!
I’ve been waiting for this video ever since I saw the announcement cheers mate
Thanks for the update. Good job as usual, Andrew. This looks to be a first class box.
it's a never ending thing this story of the box sets, reissues, remasters and so on. EMI should reprint the original mono cuts with the same machines used at the time. That is what every Beatle fan of today should aim to have.
That is pretty much what the British mono box set was that’s now out of print. They should just bring it back.
@@trackingangle929 not exactly. I mean the original 60s mono cuts, not remasters.
I remember just watching about the video when you were talking about needing a Beatles capitols box set. Time flies!
Excellent post!
@@twogruden9943 I’m not gonna lie. I’m leaning towards that option and then buy myself a VG+ copy of Beatles Story off a local record store.
Andrew!! The man!! Killer work!! Excellent analysis!! Parlogram
Same here at 68 yrs young I'm looking forward to acquiring 5 of these albums and reliving that moment in 64 when all changed for us in Feb 64!
The future any further Capitol sets depends on how this one does.
Looking forward to getting mine soon.
This is excellent
You are far from alone! With you on both counts.
@@twogruden9943 thank you... sometimes I wonder if my young 1960s' ears were that bad. They weren't.
@@twogruden9943 I love that LP. Even if without the butchers' image. It is such a rich lp. Thank you for these lines.
I’ve been looking forward to this video ever since that video.
Or the Capiphone project!!!Blows all this away!!!!
Thanks for the video, Andrew 😊
My pleasure!
I've ordered my copy, super intrigued by the US albums. I've heard they're all in mono, but I await your review. Great stuff as always Andrew 10:52
@@Tridon64 Amazon Germany, but the price has gone up this morning. It was 158 EUR when I pre-ordered.
Ive been waiting for this for 3 years
The (IMO) better U.S. Mono mixes of "And I Love Her" and "I'll Cry Instead" are the biggest must haves from this collection for me.
Love your content! Any thoughts on who will remaster these? No mention of half-speed so maybe it won’t be Miles Showell. Possibly Shawn McGee if using Abbey Road as he did the Revolver Mono in that boxset.
The answer is in the video.
I just preordered the Blue Meet The Beatles! I’m very excited!
