Evolution of My First Propane Forge

- This forge started off as really just a box made out of hard firebricks surrounded by a steel frame. Although it served me well and go me started, it really went through the propane if I wanted to get it hot enough to forge heavier stock. In this video, I'll show you how I modified it to burn more efficiently by giving it some much needed upgrades.

Looks great, and from the forging at the end looks like it's working great too!
2:13 thats what we in the industry call a "beaver tooth tip"
Looks great!! Good call switching to the ceramic wool those type of fire bricks don’t insulate very well and I’m glad you’re putting that hammer to good use!
Thanks Paul! yeah, it gets much hotter now and that hammer, especially the rounding die, can move some metal. I'm looking forward to practicing some more when it gets a little cooler finally out there
It’s a little like working with clay, I think, only backwards. Heat is involved, but with clay you work cold and apply high heat at the end, whereas with wrought iron you work really hot, then quench to finish. 👨🎨
Great analogy!
Nice forge! I think I am going to build one of these! About how long did it take to get up to temperature at 5:58? Thanks!!
Are there advantages/disadvantages between a square forge vs round forge? I assume a round forge will give you a slightly more even distribution of heat.
