When I bought my 1990 Miata two years ago, I kind of doubted I'd really enjoy having a convertible. A few weeks after getting it I found myself in a hoodie, jacket, overcoat, beanie and gloves with the top down in December lmao
I basically only close the roof when it rains.
Well, here in Florida I have to drive with only boxers and an umbrella while I lift up the roof 😂😂😂
Same.
That's the Miata lifestyle. Tops down, tits out.
I only ever have the roof up if it's raining/snowing, or at least looks very much like it will be. I had to get leather gloves though because my hands got really cold on frosty days. People think I'm crazy, but the colder days are sometimes the best; the air is so fresh it's a really refreshing way to start the day.

Once you experience owning a convertiable it is almost impossible to go back. Driving with the top down is bliss.

I've had a bird shit on my passenger seat but never in my mouth lol

That was a close call though!
One time a bird did shit on me in my miata. It was as soon as I put the top down. I was under a tree and all of a sudden, the middle of my favorite shirt is full of shit. This is why I hate parking under trees now

Wild coming back here after the Miata series is done and seeing it in it's stockish form.
To me only 2 downsides: They aren't as safe if your car flips, and they most of the time look worse than the hard top version (that being said, newer models are really making soft-tops look way better like the 911).
I still love a good exhaust and forced induction noise that you can hear with a convertible
what from other cars ?????
@Benjamin Burkhardt I'd sooner an old arse Saab or I had white on white on white Sunbird Convert lol I put it in the homecoming parade with like mustangs and Corvette. Meanwhile, Pagani launched the 2017 Huayra Roadster with equal rigidity as the hardtop Huayra but weighs 70kg less - I repeat, LESS! Same story with the faster and more powerful BC variant.
For that you have to pay a fortune. Is there any car guys like us can afford that weighs less as a convertible and is also structurally as rigid as the coupe version
@@nishitsinghbirman1923 Errr... no, there isn't any.

Btw if you have a convertible a wind deflector is a must. Even with the top down you will be able to have a conversation and your hair will stay put.
I feel like a lot of this video is just an argument against bad convertibles. The Miata was designed as a convertible only so it doesn't have the rigidity issues, wind blockers prevent the wind noise, and good aero design--even just a spoiler--helps the inefficiencies. And who keeps stuff they don't want stolen in their car? Convertible or not, cars are not secure places to store things.
Then, what's the point of having a convertible/roadster? When I bought that car, I expect the 200kmh wind to punch my face! I won't have it any other way!
"You can't argue with science"
Oh Nolan, this is 2019, science means nothing lol

I think this video was a stellar testament to just what an amazing feat of engineering the Honda S2000 was and still is! And since the MX-5 is now available in RF form and has the best of both worlds, I'll put that in for next most amazing (kinda) convertible.
I drive a 240sx convertible and one thing to consider is the lack of support for car parts that the coupe/hatch variants don’t have. While aftermarket companies come into play when trying to buy things like brakes, wiring, or door switches. You’ll be hard pressed to find someone selling window slider guides for that extra mini window or the modified brake switch no one knows existed until it broke.

I’m looking at buying a convertible mustang as my daily driver. If anybody has had one would you recommend me to get a convertible or a coupe.
The miata is the only good convertible. My NA is my baby
I own a Saab 93 2004 convertible. And watched this video because of that. I am so happy they used it as a diagram for this vid!
Overlooked fact: convertibles/soft tops handle better on winding roads and in autocross because you have less weight high up, lowering the center of gravity letting you corner and brake with less weight transfer. Because you have less weight transfer, rolling over during a hard corner (or even offroading in an open air 4x4) is less likely. Being open air definitely has some advantages depending on what you want to use the car for.
Convertibles are okay, it just depends on which one you buy

I’ve daily driven a Miata for over a year now, I’d rather keep my top down for someone to try to steal stuff than let my top be cut open lmao
Yup. 3 years and never locked the doors.
@Aromatissue what about Rain?
I had a Bertone X 1/9 in college and I miss that targa so much. it was awesome
R129 Mercedes is the best of both worlds. Designed as a convertible from the ground up. Removable hard top for winter months and beautiful styling, soft top is fully automatic, automatic deploying leather wrapped roll bar for safety, rear automatic deployable wind screen adds comfort and aerodynamics, soft top stowing doesn’t affect trunk space. I love my ‘95 SL600.
The only convertibles I like are hardtop convertibles, they don't ruin the lines of the car
G37 convertible looks better then the actual coupe imo
VOLKSWAGEN EOS!!
well, french convertibles based on hatchbacks with their huge asses... it takes lot of space compared to softtops
on some cars they just ruin the look, take a Porsche Boxster and 718 for example, they look hidious with hardtop, Miata is another example, convertibles look good without roof really
You must have never seen a Lexus IS convertible
I drove a convertible for the first time earlier this summer and had so much fun with it that im getting one in a couple of weeks. Fucking loved it.
I also thought convertibles were goofy until I rode in one. Changed my mind pretty quick
The Miata was never on my radar for buying, then I got one as a loaner for a few days. I bought a soft top 6 months later. The top is down unless its raining or over 90 degrees. Only mistake was not buying one sooner.
I had a convertible for 3 years. Nothing beats driving on country roads during warm summer evenings. But, I got over it though, and realised I preferred to not be exposed and looked at, so I now have a fast coupe instead

Jeep has it bad
@@ladainionbaker7459 yes well. Jeeps canvas is huge, very loosely fit and manually operated.
Jeep is actually one of my favorite cars. I’d love to get my hands on YJ with square headlights and coil spring upgrade. I think floppy canvas is part of that car’s character.
Engine upgrade would also be awesome. I would love to upgrade this car’s engine to MB or VW’s 2.0 turbo diesel. Would be a huge upgrade In Terms of car’s power and the amount of money spent at the pump.
As a European, I’m often a little surprised why some companies decide to produce gasoline trucks and suv-s.
I’ve had chance to try two Toyota Land Cruisers. One was 4.2 gasoline and another o e was 3.0 tdi.
The torque and efficiency of the diesel engine totally killed the meaning of gasoline engine in heavy vehicles.
Diesel can tow and do stuff on rather low RPMs.
But gasoline one was nice too in its own way. It was slightly more quiet but it took so much fuel and had not all that much power.
I'm rocking my 1980 Golf Cabrio. So glad you gave it a thumbs up in the vid :) The little Golf a lot of rust but is now at the shop for replacing al the brown parts.
The AC / Shelby Cobra is the reason why the 70mph motorway speed limit was introduced in the UK in the late 60's. A car magazine or two tested one , regularly hitting 170mph, it was widely reported in the news and there was uproar in the government & various safety organisations.
I want on vacation in Portland and I wanted to rent a camero but they only have a droptop so I took it ,it was the best experience of my life is never go back
If it's your second car, and you aren't taking it to the track, then there's really no downside at all to convertibles. I owned one for a year or two and it's my best car memories by far.
I love how they used a diagram of a SAAB convertible when talking about stiffness and handling at 4:02
Ok but I have a 1974 Land Rover Series 3, and taking the top off for summer is incredibly fun. When you drive a slow, old, loud box on wheels, performance and safety don't come into the equation at all. There's nothing more fun than cruising down the road in the middle of a warm night at a casual 80km/h with no other cars in sight and the stars shining brightly above you.

I am not biased regarding I drive a 1-series convertible BMW. Many of these points made in the video, depends on the car model and maker. In my case, the soft-top up my car is as quiet as the non-convertible 1-series. One thing to point out that slightly bugged me is the exaggeration of leather seats deteriorating and upholstery being soaking wet and moldy.
