Now I'm really excited, we finally get to discuss chickens again! We have our incubator now so I'll be hitting you up soon for those trial eggs 😁 I'm also going to try to source a slower growing bird, something similar to a freedom ranger with darker meat and larger legs.
Well the Indian game hen that is in with the white rock cockerel has finally started laying so I’ll be doing a test run on those eggs very soon. I think that most of the traditional large foul birds give big thighs with dark meat, my Maran crosses have massive thighs, very dark meat!
Glad to see you’ve got the alliums in, yes this wet spring has held everything up this year, great to see the kids getting involved! £20 prize money fantastic. Ross/Cobbs look good.
Dried sunflower seeds are a popular snack in South East Asia, very moreish to eat actually! There's a bit of a technique to it though, you put one end of the seed between your teeth and then squeeze the seed at the other end with your fingers to pop the nice edible part out from out of the shell
Looking good those chicks! I'm learning about chicken feed I've heard cooked kidney beans and are great for the birds too.. I'm looking into things I can grow to feed the chicks so I can be self sufficient on everything.. so any other feeds that can be grown and used for the birds be great to know ..
Who supplied the chicks my man? We are after table birds but don't know where to look, we are just up the road from you near Sheffield. Got crested cream legbars in the incubator then putting some of our muscovy duck eggs in as they are cracking ducks who lay really nice eggs.
My dad is after some Muscovy duck eggs for hatching if you fancy selling any?? The Ross/Cobb came from a company called Cyril Bason. They might deliver as far north as Sheffield?
@@doingoutdoors875 great thank you! Similar looking to Ross Cobb and got them from a local organic farm but at 12 weeks they could still have done with a few more weeks to be honest they weren’t that big, taste good though!
@@doingoutdoors875 heygates chick crumb to start and then heygates grower pellets, last week I added a bit of mixed corn so they put a layer of fat on but the chap at the farm did say they were slow growing
@@oursmallholdinglife5243 I’m using heygates. I’m not sure weather to keep them on chick crumb but the non medicated sort as it has higher protein than growers??
Rewatching some of your old videos, really enjoying the chicken ones. We spoke a while back about me buying some hatching eggs from you, do you have any social media i could message you on? I wouldnt mind buying some pork/beef too if you have any. Thanks. Declan.
Hi Declan, I’m glad you’re enjoying the chicken videos. I only have White Rock chickens that I’m breeding at the moment, good laying birds but not particularly big for the table. I might be able to sort a dozen out, I’m having problems with magpies steeling eggs at the moment. Drop me an email @ bigshotbenj@gmail.com and we can chat, I’ve lots of pork too

Hopefully the lure of that prize money will encourage the kids into the garden more often 🤞🏻.

We use sunflower seed in our Flapjacks that we make, vary tasty! Could do with figuring out a way to shell them quickly?

I need to do some research into growing feed for chickens, I currently buy all mine in but would be good to be self sufficient in that area !

What was the results?
Ooh where did you have them from? I had Sasso Cobs last time and they took 12 weeks want to try the Ross cobs!
A company called Cyril Bason. I’ve not heard of the sasso?? These Ross will probably take 10-12 weeks. 🍗
