Certainly better than NOSFERATU. Better paced, more structured, a few surprises, the boy's death, the heroine's faith for example. I'm surprised it became crucified by the public. Maybe people should give it a second viewing.
I thought this was a pretty good movie -- though I'm not a big fan of ugly Draculas -- LOL. As for Dracula just appearing in the Captain's Quarters, I just assumed he slipped in while Toby was wandering around then getting chased back by the 'turned' crewman. But, yeah, it did take to long for them to get that door open; plus, Toby just being frozen and not coming when called to open it, for so long, was an eyeroller.
@darford5284 U may be right. At the same time people do freeze when confronted with overwhelming horror and he is a boy after all.. Don't forget Dracula can turn into a mist and run go through doors.
