Very realistic operations. I saw a RUclips video where they used RFID operations! All of the engines and rolling stock had a RFID “chip” and used that for delivery or assembly of the trains. The engineer would back the cars over the trader and the computer would align the switch for delivery. Once completed the local would take the next consist to final destinations. Realistic operations at the highest levels. Creating a consist in the back room was done with barcode reader and making it up. Then it was ready for the operator.

OK funny story. Karyn and I were checking into a hotel and I could hear a steam train running. Clearly there was no steam train in the lobby of the hotel and clearly the sound was coming from a speaker but it just seemed to be coming from everywhere as I wandered around the lobby. it must’ve been coming through the PA system because it was just everywhere. My kind of background music! Until I realized that I accidentally put my phone in play. And it was playing a 30 minute steam train video. And the sound was coming from me.

My friends weren't quite this refined. At that time they were studying electrical engineering. But I could see them doing this in time. They had built their own switching monitoring system. It rarely failed. But sometimes it did, which gave the rail crew a big clean up. :)
In Jr high we had a basic electronic class. As part of shop. Teacher asked if anyone had built anything electronic? I had built a crystal radio but my real prize was my layout and I said so. All the kids laughed. “Yea so hard to hook two wires to the track”. No I said, two trains on the same track, individually controlled, working reverse loop and 2 sets of automatic crossing gates. They laughed louder. NERD!!!! You can’t win. Not when your 14. .
Oh yes, I had great trouble learning about switches and wondering why the locomotive would suddenly back up. Just about the time I had my O gauge assembled around the house, I had to take it apart again. Then I had this hair brained idea to put it up in the back yard. I had the first yard railway in high school. Had more trouble with rusty connectors, but full throttle on the loco took on new meaning. So did having a basset hound chase it. I've always played with the idea of doing that again; even putting one against the ceiling and running it through the house. I live in a 5th wheel now, so kind hard.
I worked for the ATSF as a conductor brakeman switchman back in the 70s and 80s and worked freight and passenger. I dealt with switch lists, trainmasters, clerks, all that stuff and hung out at Terminal Tower and Mission Tower in LA and watched the tower operators work. I have to say Lee has it dead on in all aspects of how American railroads operated up until the late 80s and early 90s. It is amazing. Thanks for the video. Now lets see Lee's crews read a paper switch list in the rain. I bet he has tiny plastic slip covers like we did. Haha

This video comes complete circle for me I just finished watching a webinar on the history of timekeeping on the Railroad amazing as it seems the relative time keeping methods of your video completes the webinars explanation of time keeping accuracy on the railroad. Scale model accuracy explained the intricacies of time and accidents. Super cool screwing around tonite.
I run 3 rail O Gauge, but I enjoy railroads like this that utilize switch lists, pick up and drop off, cool signal systems and extremely cool CTC machines. This was a terrific video.

Great video! I enjoyed the fun commentary you and your wife provide. It looks like Lee has upgraded his train control from Rail Lynx to ProRail. Many of us burned some good hours (and calories) digging out the ground from under Lee's home to create the location of the train staging tracks. (the mole) I am also glad to see that Lee has named K.N. tower after his longtime friend and UCW railroader Kelly Newton who past away a few years ago. Not sure if it is any interest to you but we are currently trying to save the last F type unit built anywhere in the World (1970) down here in Australia. The man behind it is shown on the TV Show "Railroad Australia" if you have had a Chance to see it.
Same here/ Just me. As a kid I got a chance to go in some locos, HOT AND LOUD. But the locos with the "walkway" were not hot. Mostly. So could see why the crews hated the "covered wagons".
I'd love to see this layout in person at least once! I think it'd be cool if he had a steamer or two, then he could simulate an excursion running through to all the station stops or say if a local company restored an engine to run in the area.
I aspire to do op's on my layout. At this point it's just a simple timetable that I alone run. It would be cool to be at this level but not feasable without other helpers. Coming over for Trainfest this year and hoping to learn more about it, and maybe get some pic's of the area I'm modeling Chicago Elgin Rockford.Cheers Les

This really is a beautiful layout. I just wish they would run a little slower at switching speeds. The trains seem to run too fast and accelerate too quickly. I have been watching to new ESU Lok sound videos demonstrating the Lock Sound which enables sound to be separated from the actual train speed and seeing the operators switching at such realistic speeds is just great.
Farmer Dave take a look at last weeks video on Rat Fink. We went up there to find a house I almost bought in 1978 for $1200. No not 12,000, 1200. Found it. Worth about 300K. Oh nuts!!
It was up for a day!! Then I was told to take it down. Assuming they work out their issues, I'll put it back up in a few weeks. The switch stand is not ready and the guys making it freaked out.

Whilst I understand the intent behind it and the obvious enjoyment for those involved, I could not stand it... It is part of our culture to have a healthy disregard for rules and rule makers! To me the fun is in the running, so what if the 0815 Semi fast arrives on Platforms 3,5 & 6 everyone is allowed a mistake! No-one got hurt, just had a really big boo-boo and we all had a good laugh and the culprit bought everyone else a drink that night after work. Wanna work with me??
I like sitting at the bench building stuff over a beer and a bit of television or music. BUT this is cool, not my thing, but I'd try it just for fun. Hate to get hooked on it though, and I'll bet I could.
What I was trying to say, rather badly, is for me too many rules ruins the fun for me. Of course for those into such an arrangement, good luck and enjoy as they obviously are doing but for me too structured. Agree on the possibility that, properly coached, getting hooked is aan ever present danger.....
Iam a retired railroad engineer no way I would like to do that .I don't like clubs that have Operation night.. I like to run trains build model and airbrush models but When I'm playing with a model railroad I do not want to be operating a model railroad
I hear you. Not my cup of tea either and I’ve never worked for a railroad. However I love to watch trains moving. I get a huge kick outa these elaborate systems to operate. I can watch it for hours. On video. As I work on a model which is what I love to do.
@@ToyManTelevision yes not for me don't get me wrong I love this hobby and military models but I use to be the vice president of the Chattanooga area model railroad club I went south to work on the Tennessee Valley railroad museum and then for the C&C railroad in Lafayette Ga. Went back to Michigan to finish on the Ann arbor railroad in Toledo Ohio now iam retired but I started in this hobby as a kid my parents had a big hobby shop growing up in ann arbor Michigan so I got all the good stuff growing up ..but now I am a fulltime model builder mostly German and Russian armor and airplane and I model O scale I think it just A perfect scale the sounds is amazing well I up grade the sound and smoke units and I do have smells on my layout they make smoke units and you can get any smells that you want. I have a incredible work shop most people say I have more stuff than 3 hobby shop in my area so I just don't have time to do that kind of Operations .but I love your Videos been watching your Videos for 4days I build for 7am to 11PM so I only watch RUclips Videos all day. I might start a RUclips channel on anything modeling. Keep up the hard work ...ps. take time to build some of your kits .lol

He has operating groups over but that' s all HOWEVER the national NMRA Convention is in Salt Lake in 2019 and the layout is on the tour.

Iam a retired railroad engineer no way I would like to do that .I don't like clubs that have Operation night.. I like to run trains build model and airbrush models but When I'm playing with a model railroad I do not want to be operating a model railroad
I hear you. Not my cup of tea either and I’ve never worked for a railroad. However I love to watch trains moving. I get a huge kick outa these elaborate systems to operate. I can watch it for hours. On video. As I work on a model which is what I love to do.
@@ToyManTelevision yes not for me don't get me wrong I love this hobby and military models but I use to be the vice president of the Chattanooga area model railroad club I went south to work on the Tennessee Valley railroad museum and then for the C&C railroad in Lafayette Ga. Went back to Michigan to finish on the Ann arbor railroad in Toledo Ohio now iam retired but I started in this hobby as a kid my parents had a big hobby shop growing up in ann arbor Michigan so I got all the good stuff growing up ..but now I am a fulltime model builder mostly German and Russian armor and airplane and I model O scale I think it just A perfect scale the sounds is amazing well I up grade the sound and smoke units and I do have smells on my layout they make smoke units and you can get any smells that you want. I have a incredible work shop most people say I have more stuff than 3 hobby shop in my area so I just don't have time to do that kind of Operations .but I love your Videos been watching your Videos for 4days I build for 7am to 11PM so I only watch RUclips Videos all day. I might start a RUclips channel on anything modeling. Keep up the hard work ...ps. take time to build some of your kits .lol
