His power is not some magical thing. His power is from the ground with his legs, staying down, using his kinetic chain, and then his impeccable timing on the ball---which all culminate in what looks like almost magical power. It's 15-20 variables 'timed' to be an insane quality of a backhand! The work and practice to get this timing and technique all aligned is the real magic! Amazing to watch.
@@cuqizxd9252You are saying that anybody that works as hard as him can have the same backhand? LMAO. Talent exists. Everyone is not equal. At the best levels, talent is the differentiator.
I've been watching this video every week for about a month, just before I head to table tennis. I try the cross-court backhand power-flick featured in the first minute of the video, at least 3-5 times every week. Finally, this week I pulled it off perfectly with enough pace that my opponent didn't even take a swing at it, just like the vid. It felt awesome! Thanks Fan Zhendong for the inspiration and to the person who posted this video, for an excellent educational tool.
I try to pull the cross court shot in every game & I can never put any really power behind it. The wrist strength requirement is really high especially because you are off balance on one leg essentially. But it's such a beautiful shot.
@@SahilPawar95 , look carefully at Fan’s thumb. When he puts extra power on the shot, his thumb has slid out to the middle of the paddle. This seems to help with control too.
Fan zhendong's backhand might not be looking like kreanga that has a lot of swinging but his backhand is the most effective and most efficient among all the players in history. He's the most successful backhand player alongside with Zhang jike and I know he'll achieve more in the future.
Zhang Jike is an over-achiever. In the years he won the WTTC Singles and Olympics, he was not supposed to win. Let's say, Wang Hao choked more than Zhang Jike won those events.
Kreanga and Matsudaira have those full backswing ripping backhands, but Fan seems to generate as much power with less effort and motion…allowing him to get back to the ready position quicker.
Actually his backhand style is not about power, even in further from table position he does not spin his hip but align them straight. The disadvantage is less power, the advantage is more time for faster execution. He has the best touch in the game that what makes his backhand so good. His contact to the ball is solid.
One of the worst feelings as a Table Tennis player is when you've planted your feet on the left side of the table expecting a cross court return but the opponent just lasers it down the line. It's not only the fact that you are miles off from even touching the ball but also being robbed of the opportunity of sending back a very powerful forehand return. And Fan has made many a player look absolutely ridiculous by doing this.

Stunningly, most of those were shot from the same place: the middle section between the side line and the center line. When the ball hits that spot, boom!!!!
Powerful unplayable backhand top spin targeted at the edge of the board. It's the unexpected top spin speed which makes his opponent helpless and at a disadvantageous position. Beautiful play from Fan Zhengzhou!
Don't overlook short pushes. FZD beautifully executes each one, leading to the perfect moment then lethally unleashes his invincible backhand to finish. Undeniably World No.1.
