    My sons pooled their resources together and purchased a night vision scope for me and gave it to me on Fathers Day. I've mounted it on both an AR and my 7mm-08 magazine fed rifle. I also have a rangefinder that links to the scope, which makes shooting a little like a game. I enter a little information (wind speed) and it provides a shooting solution. And does it in less than a second.
    It's great for daylight or night. It came with an IR "flashlight" but it's a little weak. A stronger one is my next purchase.
    Being in Utah, I need to look up the class Colion came for...
    And Colion said he's fallen down the rabbit hole. I think someone pushed him.

    I want dual tubes and I’m in the market now for an Nvg set but mannnnn I keep coming back to the pvs14. Especially for the price. I had so much time under 14s in the army, been working with SF ODAs I’m Afghanistan, would drive at night with them, get into fights with them, I got so used to them I feel like dual tubes would be a sweet upgrade but paying more than double the price for a small performance gain.

    He actually talked pretty candidly about the limitations and down-sides. That's pretty rare. This was a good public service, CN. The physical conditioning, training, and costs of TACTICAL NV are cost prohibitive. The chronic neck injuries are almost unavoidable. The presbyopia sets in early and stronger. Nobody talks about this stuff, but everybody wants to "see in the dark." Hints for civilians: a chem light kicks out very useful ambient light when tossed into a dark room, the back yard, etc. They're $1 each and light as a feather. P.S. Yes, they make IR chem lights. They cost more than $1 each. You know how to defeat state of the art NV? Light switches and big fires. Work every time.

    44:47 This is why SWIR is probably the future of night vision. The spectral response for uncooled InGaAs Short Wave Infrared Cameras sits around 700nm to 1400nm. This is covering the gap between Intensifier tubes which go up to 900+ nm and thermal which sits between 8000nm and 14000nm. SWIR cameras can see a completely different spectrum to NV even reaching into thermal territory with features like seeing through smoke, haze and fog while still being able to look through glass unlike a thermal device because it still works with reflected light rather than emitted heat

    If one can get a system that has both thermal and white phosphorus imaging for identifying then that would definitely be the way to go. Follow the acronym DIDD Detect, Identify(id) Decide. Using thermal for detection, spot target, switch to imaging for ID, decide friend or foe.

    I used the 2nd generation of NVGs during Desert Storm, and those things were a pain in the ass to use. They were unwieldy since mounting options was limited to one; clunky straps. Washout was terrible with those too. We had to sign for them, and they were $14K if I remember correctly.
    EDIT: Rather than "image intensification", I think it's more accurate to say "light refracting" since that's literally what they do.

    • @thegadfly1951
      @thegadfly1951 4 года назад +2

      To refract light is to change the direction of light using materials with different index of refraction values or different shapes (radial curvature of a lense).
      Optical tools such as contact lenses, glasses, static zoom or variable zoom optics, even your eyeballs are all objects that refract light.
      However refraction does nothing to *amplify or intensify* an image.
      Within a NVD the refraction takes place only to preprocess the incoming image for the image intensifier tube and postprocess the amplified image for our eyeballs.
      So to say that NVDs are light refractors is inaccurate and insufficent in terms of their function even though it uses refraction in the process.

    • @korndogz69
      @korndogz69 4 года назад

      @@thegadfly1951 Yeah. It was my understanding that how they worked was they refracted light to a focal point in the NVGs, which has the effect of amplification because the light is being gathered. Your eyes can perceive small amounts of light because of refraction.

    • @thegadfly1951
      @thegadfly1951 4 года назад +1

      @@korndogz69 You may have confused image intensification with lighting concepts such as Lumen and Lux using refractions.
      Its much easier to understand NVDs in terms of energy and energy conversions.
      That is also not necessarily the case. In your eyes the lense is used to refract the image on to your retina. Your retina is what converts photons into chemical energy that your brain can interpret.
      Its not intensity but clarity of the image that refraction provides.
      Basically nearsightedness and farsightedness is due to the image converging being behind the retina and in front of the retina respectively due to oblong shape of the eye. (genetics)
      Astigmatism is due to irregularities in the lense that does not allow a cohesive image to converge properly onto the retina.
