  • An instrumental arrangement for guitar, harp, mandolin and piano of the traditional English folk song "Lovely Joan" - the tune which was used by Ralph Vaughan Williams as the central section of his arrangement of "Greensleeves." This version starts off as a dirge, and ends up as a jig.
In the song, country girl Joan outsmarts a potential seducer, and at the end makes off with his gold ring and horse. The images in the accompanying video of various potential Joans, both possible and unlikely, are taken from the works of a range of Victorian painters, with grateful thanks and apologies for any unintended infringements of copyright.
"Down to the Roots" is a collection of new instrumental arrangements of traditional folk songs from the British Isles and (occasionally) the United States, performed on a range of acoustic instruments and multi-tracked in a small home studio. Various selections can be found on this channel, all accompanied by sequences of appropriate images.

Duly impressed with the vitality and life of the music! I can only imagine what the ancients felt when they heard this tune, as it is quite catchy.

with P standing for Powell instead of Palmer of course
That said, their post-reunification cover wasn't as good in my book; maybe they were already beginning to show signs of age, or Cozy was simply unreplaceable...

Yup, dead right. Keith Emerson was never shy about borrowing from other sources as a starting-point for new material, from The Nice onwards (America, Pictures at an Exhibition, Fanfare for the Common Man...) - he did usually give fair acknowledgement! See Luciana Catarin and others further down the comments for more observations!

Old English folk song, where are the vocals?

    • @downtotheroots8895
      @downtotheroots8895  Год назад

Well, actually this channel is all about instrumental arrangements of traditional folk melodies, so there are no vocals on any of the recordings. Sorry if you were disappointed but there are good vocal performances of Lovely Joan elsewhere on RUclips, eg Martin Carthy's at ruclips.net/video/uAkJgMZjQDk/видео.html. Or you could just sing along yourself! Thanks for listening anyway. Here are the lyrics:
A fine young man it was indeed
      Mounted on his milk-white steed
He rode, he rode, and he rode all alone
Until he came to lovely Joan
"Good morning to you, my pretty maid."
And "Twice good morning, sir," she said
He tipped her the wink, and she rolled her dark eye
Says he to himself, "I'll be there by and by."
"Oh, don't you think these pooks of hay
A pretty place for us to play?
So come with me, me sweet young thing
And I'll give you my golden ring."
So he took off his ring of gold
Says, "Me pretty fair miss, do this behold
Freely I'll give it for your maidenhead."
And her cheeks they blushed like the roses red
"Come give that ring into my hand
And I will neither stay nor stand
For your ring is worth much more to me
      Than twenty maidenheads," said she
And as he made for the pooks of hay
She leapt on his horse and tore away
He called, he called, but he called in vain
For Joan she ne'er looked back again
Nor did she she think herself quite safe
Until she came to her true love's gate
She'd robbed him of his horse and ring
And she left him to rage in the meadows green?

@@downtotheroots8895 Thanks for the helpful reply, not disappointed but I was waiting for the words. My favourite version is that by Folkal Point available on RUclips, Joni Mitchell also did a nice version. Good luck with keeping these tunes alive ........ Mike
