Oh man.... Vulfpeck is probably my favorite musical discovery I made in the last couple of years. An incredible example of their talent as musicians and performers would be "VULFPECK /// Back Pocket (Live at Madison Square Garden)". Although I'd say pretty much anything from that live performance is pure gold.

They first came together for a recording session[a] at the Duderstadt Center, a university facility that houses an arts library and other resources.[1][2] After reading an interview with German producer Reinhold Mack, band founder Jack Stratton conceived of Vulfpeck as an imagined German version of the U.S. session musicians of the 1960s such as the Funk Brothers, the Wrecking Crew, and Muscle Shoals. The idea was to channel that era of the live rhythm section.[2][3][4] The band's founding members are Jack Stratton on keyboards, drums and guitar, Theo Katzman on guitar, drums and vocals, Woody Goss on keyboards, and Joe Dart on bass.[3] Touring partners and frequent collaborators include Antwaun Stanley, Joey Dosik and Cory Wong.[5] Other contributing musicians include Charles Jones, Christine Hucal, David T. They have some great videos, "Dean Town" being one of them (showcases the bass player). Supposedly the back story to "1612" is that it was written to help the author remember a pin code. So I guess if you want to crack into his iPhone ... ha ha! The singer is Antawaun Stanley. Dude has some pipes!
You’re not too far off on the band dynamic. The guy standing up and playing air keys is the founder of the band. Multi instrumentalist. He plays guitar, keys, drums, and pretty much whatever is called for. The core band is him (jack), woody (keys), Theo (drums, guitar, vocals), and Joe (bass). They have a handful of other artists that collaborate frequently such as Antwaun Stanley (heard on vocals here)
I was late to the Vulfpeck party too but, boy have I consumed. I felt on this they were too unknown to be allowed to shine and that the excellent Jon Batiste and the house band should prop them up. Completely unnecessary. It gave them great exposure but was pretty unrepresentative of their sound. As already mentioned, their MSG show is fantastic and the Beautiful Game, Vollmilch and My First Car albums are all great. Dive, dive deep and have fun
