Hi, thanks for your interest in 3M. When performing spot repairs on a fender, it is important to follow proper techniques to minimize the appearance of clear patches or unevenness in the clear coat. Here are some tips and key points to consider:
      1. Surface Preparation: Ensure that the surface is properly cleaned and prepared before applying the clear coat. Remove any contaminants, sand the area smoothly, and clean it thoroughly to ensure good adhesion.
      2. Feathering Technique: When applying the clear coat, use a feathering technique to blend the edges of the repair area with the surrounding paint. Gradually taper the clear coat application to create a smooth transition between the repaired area and the existing paint.
      3. Proper Flash Time: Allow the clear coat to flash or partially dry between coats. This helps prevent solvent entrapment and allows for better levelling and flow of the clear coat.
      4. Proper Technique: Use a consistent spraying technique, such as overlapping passes, to ensure even coverage and avoid creating clear patches. Maintain a proper distance from the surface and maintain a steady hand movement.
      5. Temperature and Humidity: Consider the environmental conditions when applying the clear coat. Extreme temperatures or high humidity can affect the drying and levelling of the clear coat. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for optimal application conditions.
      6. Polishing and Buffing: If clear patches or unevenness occur, you may need to polish and buff the affected area after the clear coat has fully cured. This can help blend the repair and improve the overall appearance. Hope this helps!

Hi -- When working with dark-colored vehicles specifically, our team recommends sanding one extra step fine just to make sure any of those coarser grit sand scratches are fully gone before compounding. 👍 Your typical paint finishing process consists of using P1500/P2000 to remove defects, and then you transition to using Trizact 2000 or 3000 for scratch refinement before proceeding to your compounding and polishing steps. While following that process is good for most repairs, when it comes to dark-colored vehicles, you want to be extra certain that you won't have to do any rework at the end of the process -- that's why we recommend going one step finer in your sanding steps to avoid any rework. In this video, Jason gives good tips on this from 2:00-3:13.
