Just yesterday I was looking for a good tutorial on desert bases for my Orks. Then the best Ork painter I know puts out an awesome video for exactly that! Thanks mate!
Dont you have that problem with Agrellan Earth when basing miniatures after fully paining the base that miniatures sometimes just break off “scales” of cracked earth and fall from the base?
Great, concise tutorial. I am now informed in the magical ways of making a desert diorama for my Wrangler Jeep. I was looking for a way to put a few bits of grass into the scene. This has helped a great deal. Love the colours.
You lose some of the effect or vibrancy with a clear coat, but that will keep it in place! However, sort of "scrubbing" the pigments into place surprisingly keeps them on the mini and they don't really rub off unless you are actively trying to
Hey bud I've been using this guide and have a couple questions. My first base turned out brilliant, all cracked just like I wanted but subsequent efforts haven't been cracking as much and appear more mottled. Is it the thick application that cracks or the thinner parts? I've been mixing it up on practice bases but to no avail. Thanks
I have found that thicker you apply this texture paint the larger and more pronounced the cracks are. You can vary thicknesses to get some textural variety. However that being said, Ive heard from a few people that they have had issues with this texture paint and it not creating the cracking effect. I had a friend who bought two separate bottles that didn't crack. Perhaps try using something to mix the bottle up really well before applying and try applying varying levels of thickness to determine how to best to get the effect you like.
@@QuarterPaint thank you so much for reply, the second I seen this guide I knew it was how I wanted to do my army so I appreciate the after care haha. I think I've been getting thinner as I go. Got plenty of spare bases to keep trying until I nail it though. T|hanks again
Hah, well if you want to send me a couple demons I could probably paint them on camera. Unfortunately more mini's arn't in my budget after my splurging in Orktober :D
for the first coat of color I found it easier to get into all the cracks with a stiff bristled brush. You could do it with an airbrush, but you would have to make sure you are coming from multiple angles to get into all the small cracks and such.
@@QuarterPaint ah okay, I figured with the primer the spray worked either way, and for some reason you just switched to a brush for a single coat. I really have to try this though, love the way you worked in the other red and brown earth tones besides your basic yellow sand.
I didn't go to heavy on the pigments. So when used lightly they don't move around much. But I think a thin coat of a matte varnish with the airbrush would work to ensure everything stays where you want it

Hah! Awesome timing then. Glad it was helpful!
Spent an hour doing this beautiful base for my Baal Predator, and now I can’t see the base anymore
this is maybe one of the best base tutorial ive ever seen
Dont you have that problem with Agrellan Earth when basing miniatures after fully paining the base that miniatures sometimes just break off “scales” of cracked earth and fall from the base?
Try priming the base 1st, when I first started basing I put pva down 1st then a few yrs after it peeled of lol

Perfect. I’m just about to start building a desert road. Great inspiration. Thanks a lot, man! 🙏🏻
amazing work man, wow!! do you know the sand mix, where did you get yours from bro?
Really love your approach and colour choices here. Makes for a very interesting base. Thank you :)
Awesome tutorial! Don't you need a fixer for the pigments? I think they really add a lot of visual interest and "believability" to the base.
Brilliant, just what I needed. I’m just about to texture all my Sikh wars figures [400 plus] and now I have a plan. Cheers dude...👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
great looking bases, do you seal the base with matt varnish or seal the pigments, thanks
How did your crackle not pop off? Mine doesn't wanna stay on
But... But... there's no need to seal the pigments? :0
What happens to the pigments if they get varnished? Do they stay?
Extra tip: you can gently drybrush the tufts to blend them in the base color range
Use this for my Thousand Sons bases and it looks amazing!
Thank you SO much for telling where those grass tufts can be acquired. I was wondering. Thanks again.
A wealth of great advice. Thank you for the fantastic tutorial ❤
This is an awesome tutorial. Thanks for posting. Please can you share you sand mix ‘recipe’?
Great base! Did you just put the Pigments on the base dry with a brush or how did you apply them to the base so they would stick?
Yep, just applied dry. When sort of "scrubbed " into place they don't really move around much
Thanks! Will use the base for my ork buggy too :)
This is a great tutorial. Thank you very much mate
What sand do you use. I haven’t had luck with a couple products I’ve purchased - they are too uniform in grain size
Damn this is awesome. This is exactly what I have been looking for for my Adeptus Titanicus bases
Wonderful tutorial! I’ve been waiting for this for awhile!
Awesome! Glad it was helpful!
Life has been busy or I would have hoped to get more videos out there.
My dude why do you sound like you just got done running a marathon?
Looks great! How do you then attach the buggies to the base?
Super glue id imagine
This will be a nice armageddon base scheme for guard and orks.
What song did you use for the background music?
Great Tutorial
Did you seal the pigments down, or matt vanished over base?

Nice work dude, I like the variation you got in the single base
Thanks so much, that was the goal!
Thank you, very nice. gave me some simple ideas.
Fantastic tutorial man. Step by step on the way to that incredible look.
Glad you liked it!
I'm repainting my Orks and part of that is finding a new way to base my army. And here I found what I wanted. Nice! Thanks for the tutorial!
Awesome tutorial thanks . Do you think it is necessary to seal the pigments?
Probably if you intend to game with the minis a lot. You will loose some of the "dusty" quality of the pigments with a varnish or sealer
I subbed and hit the bell!
Wow That looks really good. Totally going to try to make mine like this.
Still using this for my salamanders
Imma do this for my Necrons
Great tutorial and probably the best looking desert base I've ever seen. Great job.
Great video - I plan on using many of these colors and techniques this week. Thank you for the detailed video!
I used your technique on my first miniature and it looks amazing. Thanks again for the tutorial!
I was looking for Minecraft.

This is amazing. Thank you.
Great tip on using the base coats to practise wet blending!
Great tutorial thanks
Looks amazing, be sure to try on some of my miniatures.
Thank you for making this very informative tutorial!
Beautifully done .
Great sankyu
Next level good. Thanks so much!!Please paint the upcoming demon release!

Thanks alot for the tutorial! Love it gonna use this for my Terrain!
Awesome Tutorial! I definitely use it for my Ork army bases.
Awesome, shoot me a pic on Instagram with what you come up with!
Amazing work!
Any reason you didn't zandri dust with an airbrush?

Excellent looking process!
Sweet!!!!! That's great

Awesome! Great tutorial - thank you for sharing!
Thanks for the support!
Wow
Love the colour change over the base
Thanks bud!
Thanks for your tutorial! :D

Looks awesome, a gorgeous and excellent job, very realistic!
thanks! One thing I would like to ask is if and how you seal the base after applying pigments.

@@QuarterPaint thanks!
hey, thanks for guide. The Elmer's GLue, is it just PVA?
Yes! Just make sure you arn't buying the "washable" kind as that wont hold up.
totally bad, doesn't look like desert !
