Intermediate hand sewing - 2 tone stitching

My way on doing a 2 tone saddle stitch.
Take 2 different colour threads half the length of what you would usually take for the current piece of work.
Lock the threads together at their ends.
Hide the join between the layers.
Take care on the first stitch not to pull too tightly.

That's kewl, can you use the same technique to have one colour on one side and the other colour on the other?

Not with using a saddle stitch.
The strength of the stitch comes from it be an alternating weave.
You could do a lock stitch (like a sewing machine would do) but you lose a lot of strength.
If any part of the thread is cut on a lock stitch it will just unravel.
